Apple Developer portal breach credited to security researcher

If you’ve been wondering why Apple’s Developer portal was down for a few days, blame it on a security breach. Apple announced yesterday that their dev center was hacked into, but no personal information was accessed, thankfully. So who’s behind the intrusion? A security researcher is taking the credit.

slafadevelopers

Independent security researcher Ibrahim Balic claims that his effort to breach into the developer portal was not intended to be malicious at all, and he ended up reporting all of the vulnerabilities that he found to Apple. Balic found 13 bugs in total, and was even able to access user details, but he only accessed 73 Apple employees just to prove to the company about the vulnerability.

Balic claims he comes in peace and even contacted Apple to make sure he wasn’t putting them through any difficulty. He says that he hasn’t published or used any of the information that he was able to access, but some users have reported getting password reset notifications after a possible breach to their accounts.

Apple’s Developer portal has been down for four days now, and it’s still showing that it’s down right now. There’s no word on when we might expect it to come back to full throttle, but most likely in the next day or two. While this is certainly an inconvenience for developers, this could pose an even greater problem for beta software versions.

We could see a delay on beta releases for both iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks. It seems Apple is focusing on getting their Developer portal back up and running before anything else, which means it may take longer for beta versions to release. However, we still have plenty of time before Apple’s proposed fall release of iOS 7.

Apple Developer portal: We’ll be back soon

According to a brand new update to Apple’s official developer portal, downtime occurring this past Thursday was due to an attempted intruder attack. While Apple suggests that “sensitive personal information” had no chance of being accessed, downtime occurred due to Apple itself taking the portal down to make certain of the extent of the attack, front to back.

The possibility of “developers’ names, mailing addresses, and/or email addresses” being accessed spurned Apple to take the entire portal out of commission until a full report could be made. Apple notes that they’re currently in the process of rebuilding their entire database and updating their server software.

In short: hold tight.

“We’ll be back soon.

Last Thursday, an intruder attempted to secure personal information of our registered developers from our developer website. Sensitive personal information was encrypted and cannot be accessed, however, we have not been able to rule out the possibility that some developers’ names, mailing addresses, and/or email addresses may have been accessed. In the spirit of transparency, we want to inform you of the issue. We took the site down immediately on Thursday and have been working around the clock since then.

develoeprsbaig

In order to prevent a security threat like this from happening again, we’re completely overhauling our developer systems, updating our server software, and rebuilding our entire database. We apologize for the significant inconvenience that our downtime has caused you and we expect to have the developer website up again soon.

If your program membership was set to expire during this period, it has been extended and your app will remain on the App Store. If you have any other concerns about your account, please contact us.

Thank you for your patience.” – Apple for Apple Developer Portal

Meanwhile Apple continues pushing new iterations of both mobile and desktop software in OS X Mavericks and iOS 7, both of which hit the road in earnest later this year. The public saw iWork iCloud integration in the most recent beta release, while iOS 7 and Mavericks remain developers-only.

MotorGun game brings Twisted Metal creator back to vehicular warfare

It’s time again to get dirty with some car-to-car battle-ready action with an upcoming video game title MotorGun. This game is being initiated by members of the development team behind the Windows-based vehicular combat game Interstate 76 and brings on none other than Twisted Metal (and God of War) creator David Jaffe for some real classic expertise. What we’ve got here is all of the ingredients necessary for a full-on next-generation car battle amalgamation – now they’ve just got to get moving to make it happen before it fizzles.

As the title Carmageddon made one massive amount of cash earlier this year for its rebirth unto Android, so too will MotorGun seek the assistance of the public. While this game’s set goal may appear lofty at $650k right out of the gate, prospective players will do well to remember that the Android-specific Carmageddon reached its $600k goal without too much of a hubbub surrounding it.

With the team you’re seeing here bringing out what they’re titling “Return to the Auto Duel”, we’re expecting a lot. Here’s what the team has to say about the game, in short:

“MotorGun will weld real world car physics and a diverse set of realistic cars to a set of amazing weapons systems of all kinds. It puts you in control of a deep set of customization elements – from paint to payload, it’s all up to you. As you play you’ll advance and be exposed to an ever-deepening set of vehicle tech-trees, blowers, turbos and sway bars – heat seekers, miniguns and rocket pods.”

Try you hand in multiplayer combat in the wasteland. To the victor goes the spoils. It’s the culmination of over two decades of car combat video game pedigrees and it’s commin’ at you at wide open throttle.” – Pixelbionic

The concept artwork you’re seeing here comes from Maxx Kaufman, a member of the Pixelbionic team. The final creation will be based on these bits and pieces and will take on a much more 3D look. Have a peek at a preview of the “Ratter” vehicle next:

The game will bring on several different modes of play including Convoy, Salvage, and Capture the Flag – and of course you’ll want to destroy as much as possible in both opposing vehicles and environments while you’re at it. The creators of this game suggests that both team-based, goal-oriented matches as well as Counterstrike-style matches will be taking place. That’s a combination we’d like to see.

Above you’ll see a single in-game prototype screenshot – note that this game is aimed at Windows and OS X for now, but we may see expansions as development progresses. If the team can take this all up a notch – somewhere between what we’ve seen for Max Max and what we love to kick it with in Borderlands – they’ll have a win on their hands. A win!

FBI-themed ransomware now affecting OS X users

Everyone has had to deal with malware of some sort at one point or another, with some being unlucky enough to come across the FBI-themed “ransomware” variety that presents itself as being a government threat of criminal charges should one refuse to pay a fine. This kind of malware has typically been the domain of Windows users, but has made its way to OS X.

ransomware1

The information comes from Malwarebytes, an anti-malware company. According to the rundown they’ve provided, the FBI ransomware is presenting users with a page that, at a quick glance, looks official enough: the beginning of the URL starts with fbi.gov.id, and and it harbors the real FBI logo, as well as a fake logo stating “The FBI” cyber department has targeted the user.

The trojan targets the users by using the “restore from crash” feature in the browser, which prevents the user from getting rid of the page. Attempting to close the tab results in a popup stating “YOUR BROWSER HAS BEEN LOCKED. All PC data will be detained and criminal procedures will be initiated against you if the fine will not be paid.” The “fine” in question? $300.

Aside from the threats of criminal procedures and other such nonsense, the ransomware tries to scare the user into paying the amount by specifying specific criminal activities it accuses the user of committing, such as violating copyright laws regarding music, video, and software, as well as viewing “prohibited pornographic content.”

Causing Safari to force quit won’t do any good for the user, with the ransomware page reappearing the next time the browser is fired up. Fortunately, the issue is pretty easy to get rid of by simply resetting Safari, which can be done by clicking “Safari” from the menu. All the items must be checked under the reset options.

Apple WWDC 2013 developer session videos released in full [Updated]

Apple’s WWDC 2013 developer session videos have turned up on YouTube, giving an insider insight into what’s due in iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks later this year. The footage – nearly 100 videos including covering the changes in AirPrint, how best to make use of iAd, and how OS X push notifications will work – offers non-developers a glimpse of the goodies that registered iOS/OS X developers have had access to for some time.

wwdc_2013-580x396

As has been the case for some years now, tickets for WWDC 2013 sold out ridiculously quickly. In fact, it took less than two minutes for all of the spaces to go, despite them costing $1,599 apiece.

The lure is the opportunity to get early access to Apple’s upcoming platforms for mobile and desktop, as well as the chance to discuss them with the company’s own engineers. Apple holds multiple developer sessions over the course of the five day event.

What’s unclear is how the videos play into Apple’s WWDC NDA (non-disclosure agreement), which developers are expected to agree to. That’s intended to prevent features Apple hasn’t necessarily publicly talked about from leaking; it’s unclear who has uploaded these videos, and whether it was Apple itself.

If not, then the channel itself is likely to be shut down in short order. For a top-level view on OS X Mavericks, check out our preview.

Update: Apple has confirmed that the video uploads are not authorized by them, and that they will be removed shortly.

Analyst Predicts Apple’s iOS And OS X To Outsell Microsoft In 2015

As it stands, Microsoft’s Windows operating system is very obviously a lot more common and popular compared to Apple’s OS X. The same cannot be said for Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform which pales in comparison to Apple’s iOS in terms […]

OS X Mavericks Preview

Apple promised us a software-rich WWDC this year, and the company delivered. While iOS 7 looks set to be the biggest change in the company’s mobile offering since the original iPhone, OS X Mavericks teased the latest refinements to Apple’s desktop platform. Not so flashy as iOS 7, perhaps, or as sweeping in its changes,
