Mophie Outride review: action-cam case for iPhone can’t replace dedicated shooters

Over the years, Mophie has become synonymous with extending the iPhone’s battery life. The outfit’s range of battery-filled iPhone cases has garnered rave reviews across the industry, and even I religiously used one on an iPhone 3G. In more recent days, the company has cautiously expanded into a few new areas — namely, building battery cases for non-Apple phones, and creating the contraption shown above. The Mophie Outride is an action-cam case that’s designed to be strapped onto helmets, automobile hoods and any other place where your average X Games wannabe would look to capture extreme sports footage.
But, unlike the myriad rivals on the market today, the Outride doesn’t actually include a camera. Instead, you’re supposed to strap your iPhone 4 or 4S into it (an iPhone 5 model has yet to be announced), allowing the smartphone you already own to handle the bulk of the work. At first blush, it sounded like an ideal solution to me. After all, I’m generally in favor of convergence and consolidation, and as an avid traveler, having one less thing to carry (in this case, a dedicated camera) is a godsend. In practice, however, the Outride did little outside of convincing me that GoPro exists for a reason.

So you are a proud owner of an iPhone, are you not? While the device is nice to look at and use, it is not exactly the most rugged smartphone out there in the market. This means bringing it along with you whenever you go skateboarding or want to perform some crazy stunts with your pair of in-line skates is not such a good idea, unless the iPhone itself has some sort of extra rugged protective case. Of course, recording your daredevil experiences would also require you to purchase a rugged camera which can be mounted onto a helmet, but why spend good money on that when an add-on like the mophie Outride costs a fraction of that money?
If you’ve always wanted to be able to capture those epic moments while surfing the waves but would rather not hire someone to film you, or invest in a waterproof camera, fret not as Mophie has revealed the Outride iPhone accessory. As pictured above, the Outride is a casing for the iPhone that not only will protect it from getting wet, but will also come with a mounting system and a wide-angle lens to capture those action shots/videos. It is made from polycarbonate and will offer high-impact protection for those who plan to use it for more extreme-type sports. To top it off, Mophie has also announced that they will be launching a free app alongside the Outride. This app is basically a social networking app where videographers can create a profile and upload videos taken and share them with other users. The Outride will be priced at $130 and will be compatible with the iPhone 4/4S and is expected to be up for grabs mid-September.
