Panasonic is proud to announce their latest rugged Windows 8 tablet, the TOUGHPAD FZ-G1. Powered by a 1.90GHz Intel Core i5-3437U processor, this dust-proof, shockproof and waterproof tablet sports a 10.1-inch 1920 x 1200 IPS multi-touch display, an Intel QM77 Express Chipset, a 4GB RAM, a 128GB SSD, dual cameras (1.3MP front & 3MP rear), WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, a USB 3.0 port, an HDMI port and runs on Windows 8 Pro 64-bit OS. The TOUGHPAD FZ-G1 is scheduled to hit the market from March 13th for unannounced price yet. [Panasonic]

Lufthansa’s been pulling (relatively) speedy Ku-band satellite internet from the heavens for a bit over two years, but now trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific WiFi has finally made its way to a US-based carrier. United, the first US airline to fly the Dreamliner, announced today that a Boeing 747-400 is currently flying around the globe with a constant connection, letting passengers hop online during any portion of the flight — taxi, takeoff and landing being are a few obvious exceptions, but there’s no requirement that the aircraft operate within range of air-to-ground transmitters, a la Gogo.

The installed equipment, manufactured by Panasonic, will provide two tiers of service: Standard, which will range in price from $4 to $15, and a speedier Accelerated flavor, with pricing between $6 and $20. The service, which has also been installed on a pair of regional Airbus A319s, isn’t as speedy as ViaSat’s future Ka-band offering, but it’s a step above what’s currently on board. United also announced plans to bring WiFi to its A320, along with Boeing 737, 757, 767, 777 and 787 aircraft — the airline expects installation to be completed on 300 planes by the end of this year. Still missing on many United flights, however, are power jacks — it’s difficult to take advantage of in-flight WiFi if your laptop is dead.

Update: Satellite WiFi historians may be familiar with Boeing’s failed Connexion service, which promised a similar solution but dissolved prematurely in late 2006. United’s implementation is the first of its kind for a US carrier.

As you may have guessed by scanning our CES 2013 coverage, HDTV — particularly of the Ultra HD variety — was kind of a big deal at this year’s show. In fact, UHDTV’s omnipresence fanned so much reader interest this year that we penned a feature article to put the whole phenomenon into perspective. While that makes for a lively discussion, none of the 4K sets announced at the show are shipping yet, and the few from last year that are available might cost as much as a new car — or two. Remember the first time when you laid your eyes on the iPad with Retina Display? Surely the difference was obvious when you laid it side by side with the first generation iPad and the vanilla version of the iPad 2, but when it comes to resolution count and pixel density on tablets, Panasonic has got everyone beat this CES. Granted, toting around Panasonic’s 20” tablet is not going to be the most enjoyable of tasks for road warriors, but when you consider how it weighs as much as a standard notebook (not an Ultrabook, mind you) at just 2.4kg, you would sing a different tune and say that the 20” is a sheer marvel in engineering.

Just in case you were wondering what kind of resolution the 20-inch IPS Alpha LCD panel packs, we are talking about 4K (Ultra HD) resolution. If you were to whip your calculator out and perform some mathematical equations, your mind would be blown away – 4K resolution is more than four times the resolution of Full High Definition, and when you accompany that with a high precision digital pen, you have more or less got yourself a new winner here, hands down.

Surely one needs to fork out a handsome sum to bring this 20-inch 4k IPS Alpha LCD Panel home?
