Panasonic dry head spa robot prototype

Panasonic has come up with a prototype of a dry head spa robot, where there might be possible plans down the road that could see this prototype robot attached to a desk or bath. It will rely on robot hand technology which was used previously in their hair washing robot. Panasonic described the prototype this way, “For kneading the scalp while the hair is dry, people use dry head spas. So, we’ve added a robot hand we’d already developed for washing hair, and developed this, as a model for seeing how such therapy might feel.”

Before you begin, you will need to adjust the head fitting, followed by recording your hairline position. Once done, the robot hand will go ahead and apply some slight pressure to recover a 3D scan of your head. There is an integrated 3D tracking mechanism which will allow the two dozen fingers to follow the shape of your head automatically, where the arms will expand and contract in order to reach the center of your scalp. Apart from providing a gentle, kneading motion to your scalp, this robot can also be used when you are seated on a massage chair for a full-body experience.

There are no happy endings with this one, as you cannot talk to a robot. Hey, some of us do prefer just peace and quiet, while others prefer to vent their stress through words.

Apple camera RAW update for OS X supports Canon EOS M, Nikon D600, compulsive photography

Canon EOS M

Not every update Apple makes to its RAW support in OS X merits attention, but when a new revision covers several of the biggest camera launches of the year in one fell swoop, we’ll have our eyebrows raised. The company’s not very elegantly titled Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 4.01 supports the unprocessed photos from Nikon’s ‘starter’ full-frame DSLR, the D600, as well as a handful of hotter mirrorless cameras like the Canon EOS M, Nikon 1 J2, Panasonic Lumix G5 and Sony NEX-F3. Those who aren’t keen on swapping lenses still get native RAW support for higher-end compacts like Canon’s PowerShot G15 and Sony’s Cyber-shot RX100. Provided you’re running the necessary OS X Lion or Mountain Lion, Apple just gave you free rein to pick a cutting-edge camera and shoot (in full detail) to your heart’s content.

Panasonic to offer live broadcast of Australian total solar eclipse next month

Panasonic has announced that it plans to live broadcast a total solar eclipse from Australia next month. One of the most interesting things about the live broadcast of the total solar eclipse is that Panasonic will use its solar panel technology and lithium-ion batteries to power the broadcast. That means Panasonic will be filming the sun using power generated by the sun, which is pretty cool.

The total solar eclipse will occur on the morning of November 14, 2012 and will be visible in the north of Australia. Panasonic says that it will use only its HIT solar panels paired with its lithium-ion batteries for storage to produce a live broadcast via USTREAM. Regular updates for the project and the broadcast will be posted to Panasonic’s Facebook page and Twitter account.

This will be the second live broadcast Panasonic has made of a solar eclipse. In May of this year, Panasonic broadcast an eclipse from Mount Fuji in Japan. The specific equipment Panasonic will be using in the broadcast includes its HIT Solar Panel VBHN235SE10×9 for power generation.

The power will be stored using Panasonic’s Portable Power Storage CB-LS01H×30. Panasonic will capture the video using its full HD camera, the Lumix GH2x6. The eclipse will be streamed from the Sheraton Garage Port Douglas Resort in Cairns, Australia.

Panasonic announces the Toughbook SX2 business PC

Panasonic‘s Toughbook line of durable laptops has come a long way, with the first models looking akin to something you would use to transport nuclear launch codes. Over time, the laptop line has transformed into something sleeker and smaller, but no less durable. Today Panasonic announced the arrival of the Toughbook SX2, a business PC.

The Toughbook SX2 runs on an Intel Core i5 3.3GHz processor with Turbo Boost Technology. The machine weighs in at 3.13lbs, and is approximately 40% smaller than previous models, with a magnesium alloy chassis. The LED-backlit display measures in at 12.1 inches with an HD+ (1600×900) resolution and 16:9 aspect ratio. The webcam can record in 720p high-definition, and has a built-in microphone. Ports include three USB 3.0 slots, VGA, HDMI, and an SD card slot. The battery life clocks in at 14.5 hours.

What about its durability? The SX2 has a drop height of 12 inches when turned off, with the exception of a drop to its base, which the device can handle while on or off up to 30 inches. The lid and base are rated for over 220lbs of pressure. For security, the SX2 is equipped with a hard drive/user/supervisor lock, a cable lock, Computrace, TPM security chip v1.2, Intel’s Anti-Theft Technology, and optional biometrics security.

The Toughbook SX2 is designed for mobility, which it seems to achieves with its thin and lightweight design. The wide array of features, high battery life, and durability combine the SX2 into a machine that seems as like it will function well as both an workstation and an everyday system. This laptop will be available later in October from authorized Panasonic resellers. The price starts at $2,649.
