Panasonic Lumix GH3: The Hacker’s HD Video Camera Gets Its Bits Juiced [Cameras]

A whole community of filmmakers—amateur and pros alike—turned the Panasonic GH2 into a surprisingly successful camera. It turned out, that with a simple to execute hack, you could use the camera to record ultra-sharp 100-Mbps+, 1080p HD video. The results were spectacular. With the new GH3, Panasonic has beefed up its stock camera to look more like the powerful hack. More »

Future Panasonic G camera’s 72Mbps movie-making prowess teased through speedy drama (video)

Future Panasonic G camera's 72Mbps moviemaking prowess teased through speedy drama video

If Panasonic didn’t have attention from movie producers before, it just might as of this week. Joining the quickly developing tradition of camera makers producing elaborate short movies as technology demos, the company has let cinematographer Philip Bloom wield (and tease) a “brand new G camera” to record Genesis, a fast-paced mini-drama showing a man’s race to meet his love before it’s too late. While Bloom can’t talk much about the hardware in question until the 17th, he’s allowed to confirm that the upcoming Micro Four Thirds body relies on a “superb” 72Mbps All-I codec for video — letting it capture a sprint through the streets without the compression artifacts of the AVCHD format used by most mirrorless cameras. Panasonic’s upcoming shooter also touts “much improved” results in the dark, Bloom says. It all sounds very tempting, especially if it turns out that Panasonic’s inadvertent leaks are for the same camera we see in action here. The full movie is available after the break, and Bloom has the behind-the-scenes details at the source link.

Panasonic Lumix GH3 spotted in a leak

Earlier this morning, we spotted the Panasonic Lumix GH3 in a video, and alleged specifications of the Lumix GH3 were also spotted slightly more than a week ago, but until the real deal is announced, there is no real way to confirm anything. You can check out the presentation video of the Panasonic Lumix GH3 here, but it seems that the video has been taken offline by now so as not to spoil the official party, I suppose. Do you like what you see so far?

As a refresher, the Panasonic Lumix GH3 might come with a 16-megapixel “wide dynamic range” CMOS sensor, accompanied by a possible new Venus 7 engine, an electronic shutter, a range of ISO 100 to 12,800, the fastest AF of any interchangeable lens system camera, an integrated stereo microphone, an external battery grip, Wi-Fi connectivity with remote control capability via an iOS/Android app, all crammed into a magnesium alloy body that is larger compared to its predecessor.

Panasonic Lumix GH3 revealed in video

About a week ago, we reported that alleged specs of the Panasonic Lumix GH3 were revealed, some of which included a new 16MP “Wide dynamic range” CMOS sensor, a new Venus 7 engine, WiFi with remote control abilities via iOS and Android devices and a slightly bigger build compared to its predecessor, the GH2. While those specs have yet to be confirmed, a new YouTube video has popped up online and appears to have been uploaded by Panasonic themselves which basically shows off some of the sample photos that were taken by the camera. We’re not sure if this is a leak as the YouTube video is still up there (at least for the moment), so perhaps it was meant as a teaser to whet our appetites for when the camera will be revealed (hopefully) in full at Photokina next week. In the meantime, what do you guys think? Is the GH3 the upgrade to the GH2 you’ve been waiting for?

Panasonic Leaks Video of Its Stunning New Lumix GH3 [Video]

Though it’s not yet been officially announced, Panasonic has posted—accidentally or otherwise— a video of its new Lumix GH3 micro four thirds camera onto YouTube. And things look promising. More »

Panasonic LUMIX GH3 makes premature appearance

Panasonic has stolen its own thunder with the LUMIX GH3 micro four thirds camera, pre-announce posting a video of the new model and spilling its 16-megapixel sensor and 72Mbps video recording. The GH3 inclues a new Venus image processing engine and is clad in a magnesium alloy casing that, Panasonic says, is dust- and splash-proof.

The headline ability might be video recording, though details from the video are still scant. There’s HD recording at up to 72Mbps, an impressively high bitrate for a micro-four-thirds camera, and a 60p mode; it’s not clear whether that’s at full 1920 x 1080 resolution, however, or at a lower setting like 720p.

Controls look to include a flip-out LCD display as well as the usual clusters of buttons, and the lens – which we’re assuming is the standard kit lens – is an f/2.8 12-35mm.

We’ll undoubtedly know more when Panasonic makes the LUMIX GH3 official, which is likely to happen imminently if this video’s arrival is anything to go by. We’ll be keeping an eye out.

Update: The video was taken down, but there’s a new copy here:

Panasonic shows off new PT-AE8000U 3-D home theater projector

Panasonic has announced a new home theater projector called the PT-AE8000U that supports full HD 3-D images. The projector is also equipped with advanced customization features and promises to be one of the more interesting 3-D projectors on the market. The projector has 2400 lumens of brightness and works in 2-D mode as well.

The contrast ratio for the projector is 500,000:1. Panasonic equips the projector with a new 220W Red Rich Lamp for increased red intensity allowing it to produce brighter images and deliver improved color reproduction. The projector also uses Panasonic’s Pure Contrast Plates to generate deeper blacks and eliminate light leakage.

Panasonic Pure Color Filter Pro and Dynamic Iris technologies work together to allow for the 500,000:1 contrast ratio. The 3-D technology used in the projector creates alternating right and left images using an active shutter system for smooth and properly positioned 3-D effects. The system uses active shutter 3-D glasses and includes an integrated IR transmitter that has a 20-foot range.

The projector uses a two times zoom lens with a wide range of lens shift. The projector supports a 120-inch diagonal screen from as close as 11.8 feet away or as far as 23.6 feet away. The projector has +/-100% vertical adjustment and +/-26% horizontal adjustment. Pricing on the new projector is unannounced and it will launch in late September or early October.

Panasonic PT-AE8000U projector touts brighter, smoother 3D for king-of-the-hill home theaters

Panasonic PTAE8000U projector touts brighter, smoother 3D for kingofthehill home theaters

Panasonic wasn’t one of the quickest out of the gate with a 3D projector, having only unveiled the PT-AE7000 in the middle of last year, but it’s making up for lost time with a follow-up. The PT-AE8000 puts most of the focus on that extra dimension through both a 20 percent brighter 3D picture and motion interpolation for the stereoscopic image. Fine-tuning is equally new through picture balance and monitor tools that help perfect the color and parallax effects before any 3D movie gets started. Traditionalists in love with 2D get their fill, too: a new 220W lamp produces deeper reds, a more visible 2,400 lumens of brightness and (with the help of plates and filters) an even higher 500,000:1 contrast ratio. We’ve confirmed with Panasonic that the AE8000U should cost the same $3,499 as the AE7000 when it reaches stores between late September and early October, which makes the new projector a tempting prospect if you’ve been holding off until now.
