Nokia Patents Swiss Roll-Like Battery

Nokia Patents Swiss Roll Like BatteryFor a phone to be truly flexible, what it needs is more than just a display than can be bent. We’ve seen LG and Samsung attempt to create phones with slightly more obvious curves, but they are only curved to a certain extent. What companies need next is other companies that can be bent, like batteries, for example.

Well it seems that Nokia might have thought of something similar in the past, thanks to a recently discovered patent in which Nokia describes a battery design in which it can be rolled up, much like a Swiss roll. (more…)

Nokia Patent Hints At Interactive Bezels

Nokia Patent Hints At Interactive BezelsBezels are a necessary part of screens, although in some cases they actually detract from the overall design as they can be too thick. Over the years we’ve seen bezels shrink to the point where it’s almost invisible, but at the same time what this means is that manufacturers are looking on the ability to use bezels as a means of interaction.

Apple has tried to be smart about this by introducing a technology into their newer iPads where it will allow the user to grip the screen by the edge but not have it interact with tablet. This will save users from accidentally presses due to the bezels being thin. However Nokia has something else in mind, thanks to a recent patent which hints at interactive bezels. (more…)

BlackBerry Keyboard Patent Hints At Windermere’s Features

BlackBerry Keyboard Patent Hints At Windermeres FeaturesSo earlier last month, we caught wind of a BlackBerry device that was given the codename Windermere. As to how real this device is remains to be seen, but one of the interesting aspects of the phone isn’t so much its odd design, but its unique keyboard which according to the rumors, would sport a gesture-based physical keyboard.

Now thanks to a recent BlackBerry patent discovered by BBNews.pl, it seems to suggest that the Windermere could be true, and also reveals the technology behind the gesture-based keyboard for the phone. (more…)

Samsung Receives Patent For “Touch Display Apparatus Sensing Touch Force”

Samsung Receives Patent For Touch Display Apparatus Sensing Touch ForceSouth Korean conglomerate Samsung has just picked up a patent titled “Touch display apparatus sensing touch force”, and while it must be noted that such force-sensing touchscreen displays have been in existence already, the majority of them tend to require a separate force-sensitive sensor which in turn would increase the display’s production cost, whether you like it or not. That is the way things work, and hopefully, with this patent that has been awarded to Samsung, we could see a future where this extra sensor is removed. Apparently, Samsung wants to implement a small force-sensing processor right into the display itself.

Emergency iPhone Modes A Future Possibility

Emergency iPhone Modes A Future PossibilityToday is the day that the US Patent & Trademark Office has published a patent application from Apple that is entitled “Mobile Emergency Attack and Failsafe Detection.” If you were to turn back the clock by five years or so, that was when Apple invented the iPhone emergency-mode processor, and fast forward to today, the company from Cupertino is working to advance the services which they could introduce into this particular system. In this Apple invention, it more or less relates to the iPhone – particularly techniques for the iPhone so that it can pick up probable emergency situations by itself, and help out the owner without the need to be prompted. Your very own digital guardian angel, so to speak.

Apple Looks At Device Pairing Using Touch ID (Rumor)

Apple Looks At Device Pairing Using Touch ID (Rumor)It does seem as though Apple is going to explore the possibility of device pairing with Touch ID, as well as touching on camera privacy using diffusers. These came about via a couple of recently released patent applications that detailed potential future capabilities for Apple devices, where the first pointed to a system by which a couple of devices could be paired up with the clever use of biometric information. A fingerprint would suffice, which leads to us thinking that there is more than meets the eye, while the second touches on a method to display camera information with the help of electronic diffusers.

Samsung’s Google Glass Rival Patent Filing Reveals AR Keyboard

Samsungs Google Glass Rival Patent Filing Reveals AR Keyboard There were whispers going around that Samsung would eventually jump aboard the Google Glass bandwagon, where there were also rumors of the Google Glass rival making an appearance at IFA 2014 later this year. It remains to be seen just what this piece of wearable technology from South Korean giant Samsung is capable of delivering, but a recent patent filing has shed more light on the situation. In fact, the patent filing gives us a glimpse on the kind of interface that Samsung has in mind for the masses, showing off a camera-based augmented reality keyboard that will be projected onto your fingers. Apple Patent Could Result In Live Call Screening

Apple Patent Could Result In Live Call ScreeningThe U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has just assigned Apple a patent that will entail passive audio call screening ability using an off-site voicemail service, a feature which theoretically speaking, can be applied to various smartphone platforms, the iPhone included. Apple’s U.S. Patent No. 8,666,034 for “Audio call screening for hosted voicemail systems” might eventually deliver a staple landline technology to handsets worldwide. Folks who still own personal answering machines will have fond memories of the ability to screen calls after letting the machine pick up the incoming call. Should the call be worth responding to, one can simply pick up the handset and start talking. This new Apple patent would work with hosted voicemail services, where they are off-site and rather similar in some ways to those offered by cellular operators.
