PayPal Android and iOS apps score major update with shop finder and redesign

PayPal has rolled out a major update for both its Android and its iOS apps, bringing with the latest version a newly redesigned interface and some new features. Though multiple notable features have been added, perhaps the most important among them for users is the inclusion of “Shop,” a tabbed section that details restaurants and […]

PayPal app becomes a deal offering mobile wallet payment platform

PayPal app becomes a deal offering mobile wallet payment platform

PayPal’s status as the mobile payment method of choice for the masses is beset upon all sides by many would-be usurpers. What’s the company doing to stay on top? Beefing up the feature set of its apps for iOS and Android in a big way today — adding a full-on mobile wallet, automatically-applied deals and discounts and some new ways to order stuff and pay for it.

The wallet feature lets people pay with a PayPal account, a credit or debit card, bank account or a line of Bill Me Later credit that can be applied for within the app. Like Google Wallet, the new PayPal app incorporates deals and discounts that are then automatically applied when you pay. Speaking of which, you can still send money the old-fashioned PayPal way, but the new app also integrates ordering, couponing and paying within PayPal’s merchant network. We got to see the new app in action, so join us after the break for more.%Gallery-slideshow79631%

Facebook mobile payments aim to join Paypal, not compete

This week the folks at Facebook have revealed – in short – plans to unleash their own form of mobile payments for real-world products. Though on the surface it would seem that Facebook’s creation of a so-called “mobile payment system” would interfere directly with what PayPal already has in place – including inside Facebook – […]

Facebook Plans To Test PayPal-Like Mobile Payment Service

Facebook Plans To Test PayPal Like Mobile Payment Service

Facebook has made it possible to purchase a number of real-world goods such as the ability to rent movies as well as send gifts that will get them a cup of coffee or music through iTunes, but the popular social networking service says they will be trailing a mobile payment system. The trial is expected to take place in about a month and offers a similar experience to PayPal. (more…)

Facebook to trial PayPal-style mobile payment system (update: more details)

    Facebook Graph Search

We’ve had the chance to rent movies and otherwise purchase content through Facebook; wouldn’t it make sense if we could sign in to Facebook to buy goods elsewhere? The social network certainly thinks so, as it just confirmed to AllThingsD that it will be trialing a mobile payment system in about a month. The service is reportedly very PayPal-like — Facebook users with credit cards on file would just have to log in to make purchases inside of a mobile app. Only the flash sale outlet JackThreads is participating in the test at this stage, and there’s no mention of when the trial period expires. However, a full-fledged launch is potentially a major advantage for the House That Zuck Built. The payment system would give Facebook both a larger foothold in e-commerce and more insight into what members are willing to buy from advertisers.

Update: Our colleagues at TechCrunch have shed a little more light on the subject. They claim that the payment system is more of a complement to existing services than a competitor: it would only fill out the forms for another payment provider, including PayPal. Facebook reportedly sees this more as an extension of its advertising system, as it would both speed up sales and let marketers know when their ads are effective.

PayPal Testing Photo Verification Payment Process In U.K.

If you’re lucky enough to have your popular retailer accept PayPal while you’re checking out in the store, then you know what a slight hassle it can be to have to input your password or passcode, which can add seconds to your entire transaction, and as a result, can turn your life completely upside down. That’s why PayPal is testing out a new method of verifying its users by using a photo of them as verification. (more…)

PayPal trials mugshot verification in UK stores

PayPal trials mug shot authentication in UK stores

PayPal employees at the company’s UK headquarters are tired of having to use traditional payment methods when buying their rocket and crayfish sarnies. It’s almost an affront, in fact, so they’re pushing local retailers in Richmond Upon Thames to trial an updated, entirely PayPal-based system that uses photo authentication to make things faster. If you want to try it, go to the “Local” section of your PayPal app (on iOS, Android or WP), which should show nearby participating shops, and simply select the one you’re visiting — this will then cause your name and profile picture to come up on the seller’s app so they can verify you’re the account holder and process the transaction. Having given it a quick armchair run-through, the system looks similar to what PayPal already offers in some Australian stores, and it’s apparently PIN-free at the point of purchase — although you’ll obviously have had to authenticate your app when you installed it, as well as have uploaded a reasonably realistic (and preferably static) profile picture.

517 Movies I Could Have Watched Instead of Waiting on Hold With PayPal

During my lunch break yesterday, I decided to do a little multitasking and give the kind folks at PayPal a call regarding an ongoing issue I was having with my account. I figured, stupidly, that a company as big as PayPal would have more than three people working the whole of their customer service wing. As the call disconnected two hours and 15 minutes of hold time later—likely because even the automated system got bored talking to me—I realized how very wrong I was. Here’s a quick recap.
