Toshiba’s 5-in-1 Computing Device Concept Looks Like What Windows 8 Is Meant For

toshiba-concept-2

One of the best parts of CES are the devices that companies show off that are more or less conceptual, and may or may not ever even get made. One such gadget is the Toshiba 5-in-1 tablet, notebook, media player, drawing slate, etc. It’s sleek looking in pre-production solid aluminum, and also has a lot of potential as a flexible hybrid with a form factor that’s tailor-made for Windows 8.

As explained by Toshiba, the device isn’t yet ready for production, though it does exist as a fully functional prototype. And really it isn’t too far off from existing devices like the Lenovo Yoga line of notebooks. But this Toshiba concept has some unique elements, like the dockable keyboard which is usable on its own with any other Bluetooth-enabled hardware, and the battery that lives in the display for fully independent tablet-style usage.

Windows 8 is a bit of an odd duck for many PC OEMs: It’s not something that necessarily works with traditional device designs including notebooks and desktops, and yet it’s also an OS that’s made to take advantage of existing Windows software, which isn’t optimized for touch-based interfaces.

It’s rare that concept devices displayed at CES make it to market fully intact, but Toshiba’s got something good going on with its industrial design, as well as the basic concept behind this 5-in-1, so hopefully it doesn’t get too watered down before hitting store shelves.

Mac Sales Experience Increase Last Quarter While PC Sales Take A Dip

Mac Sales Experience Increase Last Quarter While PC Sales Take A DipAs most of you guys know, Apple’s Mac computers don’t quite have the same market share as their Windows competitors. There are many reasons for it, such as Windows computers being more affordable, more familiar, and also having more software available for it that is used by professionals around the world. However Apple’s Mac computers are slowly gaining traction, thanks to a research by Gartner where it was found that Apple’s Mac computer sales have actually increased by 28.5% in the last quarter, while PC sales actually found themselves going down and have actually shrunk by 7.5%!

Of course given the PC’s market share and the Mac’s market share, the PC is still very much in the lead, although it does look like Apple is playing catchup, albeit slowly. It was found that as far as PC vendors were concerned, companies such as Toshiba and HP saw themselves making a loss of 13.9% and 10.3% respectively, while companies such as Dell and Lenovo found their sales going up a modest 7.4% and 3.5% respectively. Some are blaming tablets as one of the reasons that PC sales have gone down. With tablets being generally cheaper and portable, those buying PCs for simple use, such as watching movies and surfing the web, might turn to a tablet instead.

There’s no telling if Apple’s Mac computers will be able to continue this momentum. It is possible that the surge in sales could be attributed to the holiday season, which was admittedly true as far as tablets were concerned.

Dell 4K P2815Q 28-inch Computer Monitor is Shockingly Cheap

I’ve become a bit jaded by the fact that most of the 4k TVs and computer monitors that I have seen cost thousands of dollars. I am in the market for a new TV, but you won’t catch me spending over $1800 or so and I want a big screen for my money too. One of the nice surprises at CES 2014 has been some reasonably priced 4K TVs from Vizio and other companies that normal folk can actually afford.

    dell4kmagnify

An impressively low cost computer monitor supporting full 4K resolution has now been unveiled by Dell. The company has announced that its P2815Q 28-inch computer monitor will have a native resolution of 3840 x 2160. It will be available globally on January 28.

The monitor will feature an Anti-glare TN display, DisplayPort, HDMI 1.4 port, and several USB ports. It will support 1.073 billion colors and have 170-degree viewing angles. The brightness is rated at 300 cd/m2.

The big thing here is that the display is going to sell for $699(USD). At that price I am sure that Dell will coax a lot of people into moving to 4K resolution.

It’s nice to see a large high resolution monitor at an affordable price, and I’m sure 4K prices will only continue to decline.

Toshiba Crammed 5 Computers in Its Shape-Shifting Concept 5-in-1 PC

It’s a concept but it’s a super fun one. Toshiba’s shape-shifting concept 5-in-1 PC somehow manages to be a laptop, a tablet, a convertible tablet, a canvas, and a presentation TV-type device. A few of those five might be redundant (and/or useless), but it’s pretty freaking sweet to see one computer try to be everything you want it to be.
