Fresh from impressing President Obama, Bill Nye and LeVar Burton, WaterColorBot — sorry, Super Awesome Sylvia’s WaterColorBot — is ready for prime time. The makers are taking to Kickstarter in order to sell the robot, which transfers vector art and trackpad daubs to paper without the mess of doing it yourself. The team needs to scrounge together $50,000, and a pledge of $295 will get you an unassembled, DIY kit. Panasonic launches $100 SC-NT10 rugged wireless speaker

Panasonic is no stranger to the rugged gadget game, so it doesn’t come as a surprise that the company’s newest wireless speaker is another toughie. Called the SC-NT10, the 4W compact device houses two teensy full-range speakers and a passive radiator. The company claims its “quad proof” design can take on dust, splashes of water, intense heat or freezing cold and drops from as high as 30 inches. Other features include NFC for quick Bluetooth pairing, a 3.5mm jack, and up to eight hours of battery life. It won’t ship until this fall (estimated date is sometime in August), but it’s currently available for preorder for $100 each. If you find that price too steep for a hockey puck-sized speaker, you can check out SC-NT10’s less edgy but cheaper cousin.

One reason that we prefer keyboards to pens is the dignity-saving presence of a spell checker — but that won’t help your average schoolchild, obligated to learn their language scrawling on dead trees. Now, a pair of German inventors have developed Lernstift, a learning pen that’ll ruthlessly nag you into improving your spelling and handwriting with the power of vibration. Packing a stripped-down Linux system with a non-optical motion sensor, it’ll work out what you’re writing and buzz you if it thinks you’ve made a mistake, even if you’re scrawling in mid-air. In addition, there’s a calligraphy mode, which’ll let you know exactly how you could make your penmanship a little more, you know, legible. The makers have taken to Kickstarter to raise £120,000 ($181,476) in funding, with a pledge of £99 ($150) snagging you a device. We had a, um, sneaking suspicion something like this might be happening — but we wanted to see it in person, just to make sure. After an accidental tip off, Nokia and AT&T are finally ready to show off the latest flagship Lumia for real. Meet the Nokia Lumia 1020, complete with all 41 million of those reasons we’ve been hearing about for a while now. That, naturally, is a not so subtle reference to the second-gen PureView 41-megapixel sensor, packed with what the company’s calling the “largest back side illuminated sensor available on a smartphone.” Around the front, you’ll find a 4.5-inch 1,280 x 768 pixels (at a 16:9 aspect ratio) AMOLED PureMotion HD+ display protected by Gorilla Glass 3 and — the company adds — offering super-sensitive touch, even when the user’s got a pair of gloves on (not that we’re thinking about such things in mid July).

The image-focused Windows Phone handset also features six-lens Zeiss optics, manual shutter, xenon flash for different light levels and second-gen optical stabilization. On the software side, you’ll get a Nokia Pro Camera app, so you can manually adjust flash, focus, ISO, white balance, shutter speed and exposure — you know, like on a real camera. On the video side of things, you’ll be able to shot 1080p at 30 frames a second with 4x zoom (and 6x in 720p), while the built-in mics promise high quality even in loud settings. Using the app, you can also reframe photos, zoom, change orientation and more.

The patent application from Sony that popped up at the US Patent and Trademark Office this morning isn’t quite the DualShock 4 that we’ve become acquainted with this year. While it contains many descriptors that apply to the controller Sony introduced alongside its PlayStation 4, it’s also got a few extra bells and whistles that the current model doesn’t include — most notably, a microphone for tracking player location and a larger light bar that extends to the bottom of the controller. Apparently the light bar at some point could be “shaped to provide for a wide angle of visibility.”

There’s also a variety of trackpad versions, and the patent describes a slight outward curvature “which provides a tactile sensation by virtue of its shape” — the DualShock 4 models we’ve used don’t seem to feature this, but we’ll need to revisit the controller to be sure. Further, the trackpad was apparently tested as a display screen as well at one point. “In one embodiment, the touch panel can be coupled with a display screen to provide a touchscreen interface as part of the controller,” the application reads. “For example, the touchscreen might display an image which delineates regions of the touchscreen that correspond to various functionalities for the interactive application.”

Beyond that, the patent dances around its connection to the PlayStation 4, as this was filed back in the end of June 2012 (it just published today). Make no mistake: this is very much a patent for the DualShock 4 long before the controller and its corresponding console were announced.

Oh Wii Vitality Sensor, we hardly knew ye… in that we didn’t know you at all. Nintendo introduced the pulse-sensing Wii peripheral at its E3 2009 stage show, and said we’d hear more in “the future.” That future never came, despite occasional assurances that the device still existed. During a recent Q&A with Nintendo head Satoru Iwata, an analyst brought up the device once more, and Iwata said it encountered too many issues in quality assurance testing to bring to market.

“We have not been able to launch it as a commercial product because we could not get it to work as we expected and it was of narrower application than we had originally thought,” he told investors. According to Iwata’s estimates, approximately 90 out of 100 people were able to use the Vitality Sensor without a hitch, though he (thankfully) requires that it work with “1,000 of 1,000 people.” However, he admitted “but [since we use the living body signal with individual differences] it is a little bit of a stretch to make it applicable to every single person.” He’d still love to make the Vitality Sensor a reality “if technology enhancements” allow, but thus far, testing renders it “insufficient as a commercial product.”

In other Nintendo news, Iwata assured investors that he will continue to monitor employee cafeteria quality-related concerns. Seriously though, that was a question.

While Instagram busies itself tackling the world of micro-video, D2M, the company behind Instacube, is struggling to bring its Android-based photo frame to market. Late last month, it took to Kickstarter to update funders on delays, with a message titled, bittersweetly “We’re Still Here.” The company noted that, due to some last minute manufacturing shakeups, it would be unable to ship the device in July. Earlier today, it used the same forum to expound upon those problems, stating that while “no issue is insurmountable,” a fair amount needs to happen before the boxes can begin shipping. One, the right partner needs to be found and two, the company needs more funding. As such, D2M is currently seeking investors and partners for $250,000 to $350,000 in development funds and $600,000 for the first round of production.

Still no firm update on when the Instacube will ship, and while the company did say it will be offering refunds to irritated backers, they’ll only be honored once said shipping actually occurs. Oh, and as for Instagram video support? It’s a possibility — just not at launch. Users will have to view videos as stills when the Instacubes first arrive.

Dear Apple, here’s what I want from the new Thunderbolt Display

The Apple Thunderbolt Display is long overdue a makeover. Revealed in July 2011, the 27-inch monitor has watched generations of MacBook come and go – and, until this year at least, the Mac Pro stagnate with no compatibility whatsoever – and, despite the iMac aesthetic it originally echoed being significantly upgraded last October, still languishes with its original design. Sometimes, with Apple, you have to be patient. The company has, for the most part, a yearly refresh cycle, but the Thunderbolt Display is (in tech terms) old. Still, that arguably just gives Apple the chance to do something particularly special with the new Thunderbolt Display – so here’s my wish list.

The current Thunderbolt Display makes most sense when paired with either a MacBook Air or Pro, or the Mac Mini. Its 27-inch, 2560 x 1440 resolution LED-backlit IPS panel still looks great, even several years after its original debut, though it’s undeniably lacking in pixels compared to the Retina technology Apple is rolling out on its MacBook Pro notebooks.

What it hasn’t played nicely with is the existing Mac Pro, which until the upcoming 2013 iteration has lacked Thunderbolt support. Instead, Apple has kept the older, 27-inch LED Cinema Display around, effectively identical bar the use of a Mini DisplayPort connection.

The new Mac Pro, the stubby cylinder announced to great fanfare at WWDC 2013 last month, in fact introduces Thunderbolt 2 to Apple’s range (and the tech world at large). Delivering twice the bandwidth of Thunderbolt, by combining the two 10 Gbit/s channels into one, 20 Gbit/s pipe, it’s capable of full 4K UltraHD resolution and, in fact, of simultaneously displaying it on an external screen while also transferring it.

So, Thunderbolt 2 would be the first thing on my shopping list for the new Thunderbolt Display, not least because that extra bandwidth would be useful for turning the monitor into a hub. Since Thunderbolt (1 and 2) supports daisy-chaining up to six devices from a single host port, the use of the newer connection type means even more potential for high-bandwidth applications routed through the display.

The current Thunderbolt Display offers a gigabit ethernet port, FireWire 800, a second Thunderbolt connection for daisy-chaining, and three USB 2.0 ports. A humble upgrade would see that USB switched for the faster USB 3.0 standard.

“A wish list needn’t be humble: I want an external GPU”

Still, a wish list needn’t be humble, and so what I’d really like to see is the Thunderbolt Display gain its own external GPU. We’ve already seen some attempts at Thunderbolt-connected external graphics – Lucid showed off one, based on AMD’s Radon 6700, back in September 2012; it was capable of boosting a standard ultrabook from native 28fps to 89fps – but the argument for including it in the new monitor makes even more sense when you look at how the rest of Apple’s range is developing.

On the one hand, you have the MacBook Air, most recently upgraded with Intel’s fourth-gen “Haswell” Core processors. Now, Haswell is great for battery life – we comfortably exceeded Apple’s own 12hr runtime predictions, and that’s likely to get even longer when OS X Mavericks arrives later this year – but it doesn’t do much for graphical crunching. How much better to be able to plug in a new Thunderbolt Display and instantly get the benefit of extra GPU power when you most likely need it, right on the desktop.

The MacBook Pro is more GPU-potent from the start, thanks to its discrete chipset, but it too could still benefit from the addition of standalone graphics support where no compromise for power consumption would be required. The GPU in a new Thunderbolt Display could count on a mains power source, and as such not have to sacrifice any potency in the name of prolonging runtimes.

It’s with the new Mac Pro 2013 that such a display enhancement makes most sense, though. The compact diminutive workstation comes with dual-GPUs out of the box, but from the moment Apple first previewed it there were questions as to how upgrade-friendly the double Radeons would be. In fact, the whole Mac Pro redesign shifts from internal improvements to the benefits plugging in external components can bring, whether that be more storage, optical drives, or something else.

So, rather than swap out the onboard graphics, plugging in a new Thunderbolt Display could simply add to them. Mac developer Guy English wrote at length last month about the potential for parallel GPU processing (something AMD itself has been talking about consistently for its last few product cycles too, as part of its Heterogeneous Computing drive) and how the new Mac Pro will open up a fresh age of enormous compute power, along with Apple’s apparent shift away from pure benchmark boasts and toward the sort of real-world applications of today.

Even with the slimmed-down design of the current iMac, there’s certainly room in the 27-inch model for an extra GPU or two. In fact, since it’s my wish list and I can add what I like, I’d probably take up a little more of it with some onboard flash storage, adding to the internal capacity of whatever Mac is plugged in. We’ve already seen that Thunderbolt (1) external drives with solid-state memory can be as fast as internal drives; certainly enough to manipulate high-resolution video from, without any performance hit compared to when dealing with locally-stored files.

The biggest question is resolution. Right now, the 27-inch iMac runs at 2,560 x 1,440; Apple changed the panel sandwich itself in late-2012, optically-laminating the various layers together so as to improve visual quality, but the sheer number of pixels hasn’t been changed for some time. Despite ongoing rumors of a Retina iMac, for one reason or another – likely price and component availability – we’re yet to see it happen.

In an ideal world, Apple could step up to Ultra HD resolution (3,840 x 2,160) and blow our eyes away. Thunderbolt 2 certainly supports it. However, there’s a dearth of 27-inch Ultra HD panels out there right now; the closest you get, really, is Sharp’s 31.5-inch IGZO Ultra HD screen, which we’ve seen begin to show up in commercial monitors.

Apple is already believed to have an “in” with Sharp, which could certainly give it some leverage for snapping up the coveted panels. That would make for a big Thunderbolt Display 2nd-gen, however, both in terms of price and desk size. One possibility, then, could be a return to the days of multiple Apple display size options: perhaps a 27-inch version, running at the existing resolution, and then a larger model delivering Ultra HD for those that have the depth of wallet for it.

Whether Apple opts to cater to the cash-strapped, Ultra HD seems a case of “when” not “if”; after all, Phil Schiller already billed Final Cut Pro X with 4K support as being one of the key developments for the 2013 Mac Pro, even illustrating it during the WWDC keynote with a shot of a triple display setup powered by the workstation. If Apple doesn’t give its highly-paid top tier developers (and traditional Mac Pro audience) the monitors to match, someone else will, and I can’t see the canny Cupertino firm allowing itself to miss the opportunity.

The new Mac Pro tells, among many things, the story of Apple’s fresh attitude to modularity. Fitting everything bar the kitchen sink into a single box – and leaving room for twice as much again – is the old way; better, Apple seems to be saying, to take advantage of high-speed interconnects like Thunderbolt 2 to grow more organically, adding external components piecemeal as needed.

Apple could simply refresh the Thunderbolt Display with a new casing and the second-gen connection. It’d probably sell plenty, too. Still, I can’t help but wish that some of the company’s ambition filters down from the team responsible for the new Mac Pro, and the new Thunderbolt Display 2 becomes more than just a screen.

It’s a good thing that Selfloops is tackling both needs at once with its new Android ANT+ Accessory, then. The USB add-on isn’t tiny, but it can grab data like cadence and heart rate from a nearby ANT+ device while keeping a phone topped up through its 2,000mAh battery. The peripheral is also one of the few to bring ANT+ to Android 2.3 — if you’re still using an older handset, you’ve found an ideal fitness companion. Just be prepared to wait for it. While Selfloops is currently taking pre-orders for the $115 Android ANT+ Accessory, it’s not starting shipments until October.

Redesign notwithstanding, the Xbox 360 is clearly in its twilight years. Wouldn’t it be nice to give the system a retirement gift? Microsoft thinks so, as it just unveiled a stand-alone gold version of its Chrome Series controller. The wireless gamepad shares the same transforming D-pad as past special editions, but ups the flashiness by a factor of ten — and won’t require that you buy a Star Wars-themed console at the same time. Microsoft ships the $55 gold controller worldwide this August, although it will only be available at a handful of stores, including GameStop and the Microsoft Store in the US.
