Nikon Coolpix P7700 and S01 appear for Autumn pocket shooters

This week the folks at Nikon are bringing on the heat with not just an Android-powered smart camera, but two more pocket cameras as well. With the Coolpix P7700 you’ll find that a $499 camera can bring on a beastly set of specifications starting with a massive 1/1.7-inch 12.2 megapixel BSI CMOS sensor. The Coolpix S01, on the other hand, will run just $179 for a 10 megapixel CCD sensor-toting camera with a 2.5-inch touchscreen interface.

The Coolpix P7700 is what Nikon is bringing on to fight with the Canon PowerShot G1 X for certain, complete with an adjustable display that flips wherever you need it to, a 7.1x zoom lens, and their own Lens-Shift Vibration Reduction. This unit also has manual controls galore, of course, and the unit is made to be a perfect blend of high-end specifications matched with a simple to use interface.

The Nikon Coolpix S01 brings on an even simpler interface to match its slightly lower-end specifications. It’s certainly not the least powerful camera on the planet with its 10 megapixel CCD sensor and built-in flash, but at just $179 you’ll find yourself unable to resist when you’ve got a couple of bills in your pocket this winter season. You’ve got electronic VR, a 3.1 x 2.1 x 0.7-inch body, and a collection of color choices. You can pick up red, silver, white and pink later this year.

Have a peek at our Nikon tag to see the other devices they’ve brought to the market this season and check the timeline we’ve set up below to see how fabulous their most noteworthy offerings have been. And be sure to check out the Android-powered Nikon Coolpix S800c without a doubt – it’s strange and fabulous!

Instacube: The Dedicated Instagram Photo Frame

Have you ever wanted a dedicated device to navigate your Instagram feeds? Well, Instagram addicts rejoice, because D2M is working on something they call Instacube, which will allow you to do exactly that and more!

instacube instagram photo frame

Instacube is basically a digital photo frame specifically made to display and interact with Instagram photo feeds in real time. The 6.5-inch touchscreen has a special 600 × 600 resolution display, allowing you to view the photos as high as Instagram permits. That’s a bit odd, in my opinion, for what happens when Instagram updates to a larger resolution?

You can tap between pictures, and type when needed using the on-screen keyboard. There are dedicated tactile buttons on top which power the device on and off, switch feeds, and a heart-shaped button for liking photos. It’s powered by Android and comes with 4GB of storage as well as 256MB of RAM. It keeps connected to Instagram via Wi-Fi. The rechargeable battery allows you to move about with it.

Instacube is currently raising funds for production over on Kickstarter, and you can get your hands on one of the first 1,000 Instacubes for $99(USD), a $50 discount off the regular retail price.

Canon brings on two new PowerShot digital cameras for zoom action

The folks at Canon have introduced two new zoom-friendly units in the SX500 IS and the SX160 IS, both of them PowerShot cameras for the common photo-loving user. Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager of the Imaging Technologies & Communications Group for Canon USA noted that these two units are made specifically to bring on fabulous optical zoom – and that’s what you’re going to get!

PowerShot SX500 IS

With this first of two units being introduced this week, Canon brings 30x optical zoom (up to 720mm) in a compact camera design. This unit has 16.0 megapixel sensor and powerful DIGIC 4 image processor for fabulous results once you’ve done all the zooming and focusing you’re going to do, and you’ve got Canon’s Intelligent IS system as well. With Canon’s Intelligent IS system, you’ll be getting “rock-steady” images and HD video that’s top quality even when you’re zoomed in all the way. It’s not perfect, but Canon notes that it’s close!

You’ll be getting a Zoom Framing Assist feature for making your zoom action seem effortless. This feature exists as a button that sits on the lower left of your camera, it able to zoom out to re-locate and frame your subject. A framing box will appear on your display – the display being a lovely bring LCD, by the way – this box able to help you frame before shooting, then allowing you to move back to zoomed-in range when you need it!

PowerShot SX160 IS

This device doesn’t quite have the massive amount of zoom ability that the other model does, but a powerful 16x optical zoom should do the trick for your everyday activities. You’ve also got a dynamic optical zoom range from 28mm wide up to 448mm and a 16.0-megapixel sensor, DIGIC 4 image processor and Canon’s Intelligent IS system once again. This device also has the ability to start and stop recording HD video at the push of a button right alongside full range optical zoom – your videos are about to get a whole lot more dymanic!

Both of these devices expected to be available in September 2012 for an estimated retail price of $329.99, and $229.99, respectively. Sound like a pair of point and shoot cameras you’d consider for yourself for this upcoming school season? Let us know!

Canon announces PowerShot SX500 IS, SX160 IS superzoom cameras ahead of Photokina

Canon announces PowerShot SX500 IS, SX160 IS superzoom cameras ahead of Photokina

Digital imaging buffs are certain to experience a whirlwind autumn, but there’s nothing on the books saying that manufacturers need wait for the biennial Photokina expo to roll out new models. Just in time for the back-to-school season, Canon is announcing two new superzoom cams — the SX160 IS will serve as the successor to the SX150, while the SX500 IS is an entirely new camera, set to sit alongside the company’s SX40 HS and SX260 HS point-and-shoots. Both new models include identical 16-megapixel 1/2.3-inch CCD sensors, intelligent image stabilization, a relatively modest ISO range of 100-800 and the ability to capture 720p video at 25 frames-per-second.

As you may have guessed the SX500 IS is the higher-end flavor, offering a 30x, 24-720mm lens with a maximum aperture range of f/3.4-5.8. That model boasts autofocus improvements of 32 percent and decreased shutter lag of 33 percent over the SX40 HS, Canon’s former top model in this category. The SX160 IS, for its part, packs a 16x, 28-448mm f/3.5-5.9 lens and offers 22 percent faster autofocus and 46 percent less shutter lag than the SX150 it replaces. It’s also powered by AA batteries, which some users may find to be an advantage, considering wide availability during trips abroad. Both cameras include 3-inch LCDs — 461k-dot for the SX500 and 230k-dot with the SX160 — and are set to ship in September, with the black SX500 IS priced at $330 and the SX160 IS available for $230, in both red and black.

Canon builds 80 millionth EF lens

Canon is one of the biggest names in the photography industry and offers a number of digital cameras and camcorders. The company’s products range from high-end, very expensive professional-grade DSLR cameras to cheap nearly disposable point and shoot cameras for beginners. Canon has announced that it’s celebrating a new milestone in the production of its EF lenses.

Canon built its 80 millionth EF lens on August 3 of this year. The company hit the 10 million mark in 1995, and by 2001 had constructed 20 million EF lenses. Canon took another five years to reach the 30 million mark and in 2008, the company had produced 40 million EF lenses. When Canon’s EOS Digital SLR cameras took off, production of EF lenses boomed as well with the 50 million unit milestone coming in 2009.

That means between 2008 and 2009 Canon constructed 1 million EF lenses thanks to its popular digital cameras. By January of 2011, the number of EF lenses constructed had reached 60 million and only nine months later, production had reached 70 million. It has now been nine months since that 70 million mark was hit in 2011, and Canon is celebrating 80 million lenses produced in its EF series.

The EF lens was first introduced with the EOS SLR camera system in March of 1987. Canon says that its line of EF lenses has included a number of world’s first technologies, including the Ultrasonic Motor, Image Stabilizer, and multilayered diffractive optical (DO) elements. The current Canon line of EF lenses has 76 models.

Olympus confirms new high-end Four Thirds DSLR ‘currently under study’ following vague Facebook post

Olympus confirms new highend Four Thirds camera in the works, doesn't offer up further detail

Visitors to Olympus’ UK Facebook page were met with some “BREAKING NEWS!!” on Friday. According to the post, the camera maker is developing a new DSLR that would theoretically offer focusing performance on par with the OM-D, while providing native compatibility with the company’s high-end Zuiko Digital ED lenses, such as the 90-250mm f/2.8. We reached out to Olympus reps in the US, who added the following:

“A new camera body is currently under study to complement our line of Zuiko Digital Specific Four Thirds lenses. However, Olympus has NOT issued a press release on this new camera body.”

With Photokina just a month away, it’s unclear whether or not this new mystery DSLR will make its debut there, but it’s certainly a possibility. As for looks — that’s anyone’s guess, though the company’s social media arm opted to include a picture of the E-5, which serves as Olympus’ current full-size flagship. You’ll find the full Facebook post at the source link below.
