Depart Of Justice Lands Conviction Against Android App Pirates

Depart Of Justice Lands Conviction Against Android App PiratesJust like normal software for computers, mobile apps can be pirated too, which is why the team Evad3rs received a lot of flak when they included the Taig Chinese store in their jailbreak which was found to play home to a lot of cracked and pirated apps. Unfortunately pirated mobile apps is an ongoing thing and we guess there are users out who find that $0.99 is still too dear of a price to pay.

That being said while we have heard of how courts have managed to land convictions for pirating movies and music, the same cannot be said for mobile apps, at least until recently where the Justice Department has managed to successfully land their first ever conviction against mobile app pirates. Judge Rules That IP Addresses Aren’t Conclusive Enough To Determine Pirate’s Identity

Judge Rules That IP Addresses Arent Conclusive Enough To Determine Pirates IdentityOne of the ways copyright holders are able to determine where copyright materials have been downloaded is by tracing the IP address, which in most cases usually reveals information about that person, like their name, phone number, home address, and so on.

For the most part that is how copyright holders, like record labels and movie studios, track down people who might have been pirating their property, such as through torrents. However in a recent ruling by a judge, it seems that he might have set a precedent in which IP addresses will start to lose their potential as a way of tracking down a pirate. (more…)

Popcorn Time Gets Resurrected Under A Different Torrent Group

Popcorn Time Gets Resurrected Under A Different Torrent GroupJust last week we reported on a streaming service called Popcorn Time. It was basically a pirate’s equivalent of Netflix where users would be able to stream torrents instead of downloading the files onto their computers.

According to its creators, they claim that Popcorn Time is 100% legal, although we’re not sure how. Perhaps it could be due to a loophole in the law, but whatever it is, its creators asserted its legality, although the act of piracy itself is not. That being said, they decided to shut down its service anyway, but not before the code for the program made its way onto GitHub where it has since been forked several times. (more…)

Popcorn Time Is The Netflix Equivalent For Pirates

Popcorn Time Is The Netflix Equivalent For PiratesDownloading copyrighted movies via torrents is illegal, which we’re sure many of you guys are well-aware of, although admittedly that hasn’t stopped many from continuing to do so, which is why services like Netflix are pretty popular because it means that users won’t have to wait for the delivery of their DVD or Blu-ray since content can be streamed directly.

Interestingly enough it seems that even movie streams can be pirated, which is what Popcorn Time is looking to do. Popcorn Time is a desktop app available for Mac, Windows, and Linux computers, and when installed it allows users to stream movies, all sorts of movies including the latest ones, onto their computer for free!
