In a ruling that some have called yet another nail in the coffin, a federal judge dismissed a case against one of the defendants in a mass BitTorrent lawsuit. According … Continue reading
The list of the most pirated shows of 2013 has been published and the show at the top is a repeat from last year. According to the list compiled by TorrentFreak, Game of Thrones was the most pirated show of 2013. The show had an estimated 5.9 million downloads compared to an estimated 5.5 million viewers on TV. That means more people pirated the show than watched it on HBO.
Rounding out the top ten list in order are Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Big Bang Theory, Dexter, How I Met Your Mother, Suits, Homeland, Vikings, and Arrow.
More people pirated Homeland than watched it on TV as well. It’s cool to see Arrow on the list, that is one of my favorite shows and I just started watching it on Netflix. Of course, while the level of piracy is flattering, keep in mind that it’s us paying subscribers who actually fund these amazing productions.

Crime does not pay, and certainly it is a crime to steal something that does not belong to you in the first place. Software piracy is a very big issue that needs to be tackled, and Apptricity, the maker of logistics software that is used to track down the location of soldiers as well as shipments in critical missions, has decided to bring the US Government to court after the defaulted on software license fees. This means that the US military had been running on unlicensed copies of the software, which would be tantamount to piracy – and the kicker is this – it has been going on for nearly 10 years!
Apptricity claims that the US Government had unlawfully installed the software on 93 servers and approximately 9,000 devices, not to mention another 500 licenses which were paid for. The license fees for the software alone stood at $1.35 million for each server, while it should cost $5,000 per device – and taking out our trusty calculators, it would amount to roughly $224 million in lost revenue. The US Government has since decided to settle this lawsuit by handing over $50 million to Apptricity, which the latter accepted. It does seem as though their working relationship is set to continue in the days and years ahead though.

Piracy of Football Manager 2013 saw more than 10m people illegally download the game since mid-May 2013, Sports Interactive chief Miles Jacobson has revealed, with one copy even being stolen by a user in the Vatican. Christmas ho, Captain! I see the big holiday coming off the starboard bow. No, wait, it’s an iceberg! We are are doomed. Well, Christmas is just around the corner and if you are a spoiled rich kid, here is what will be under the tree. Er, maybe you can put the tree inside of this ship.
This $27,000(USD) Pirate Ship Playhouse from Hammacher Schlemmer is an awesome place for rich kids and their friends to hang out. This 23′ high weather-beaten pirate ship has a cedar and redwood exterior, along with classic pirate decorations. There is a cutlass-bearing skeleton lashed to the bowsprit, a boarded-over cannonball hole, crossed bones that form a window pane, and a crow’s nest with Calico Jack Rackam’s Jolly Roger flag.
The playhouse rests on a hollowed-out five-foot diameter tree trunk that has a ladder inside. You can also enter using the climbing net or the staircase. All interior areas are framed in Douglas fir. No expense (or tree) was spared. If that isn’t enough, the corkscrew tunnel slide extends from the balcony affixed to the stern and a fireman’s pole extends from the bow.
Stupid rich kids have all the fun. Then again, their parents have all the debt, so whatever.

Hollywood has been fighting the battle against file sharing sites for years in an attempt to stop what it sees as conduits for piracy. The legal battle surrounding these file sharing sites ended up with Google blacklisting major file sharing sites such as 4Shared, The Pirate Bay, and isoHunt back in 2011. Getting the sites […]
RIAA CEO Cary Sherman recently outlined his vision for improved cooperation between copyright holders and service providers. Sherman says that he will seek agreements that will see file hosting sites be required scan incoming links for piracy. Sherman also wants search engines like Google to do more to prevent piracy. One of Sherman’s goals is […]
The media industry has had a long and adversarial relationship with piracy, and Netflix, who provides legitimate streaming access to content, is no different. So it sounds ironic, and yet at the same time almost unexpected, that Netflix indirectly benefits from piracy by helping it choose which shows to buy. As Netflix begins making its […]
It can be scary to get a CT scan, whether you are an adult or a kid. God only knows what that radiation is doing to you. What if you end up like the Hulk? To ease the fears of children who need to endure a trip through the machine, New York-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital is one place to go.
They are one of the largest children’s hospitals in the country and so they felt it was up to them to make sure they were administering the lowest doses of radiation possible to the kids, so they picked up one of GE’s Adventure Series CT scanners – this one in a pirate theme. (They also make jungle, underwater, summer camp and space themed scanners.)
In addition to the scanner, the entire scanning suite is pirate-themed. Arrrr! Let’s all do it. Free scans on me! Wait. How much? Okay, everybody just enjoy the images. On me.
