PlayStation 3 update brings automatic downloads to all PSN users, more Vita sharing options
Posted in: Today's Chili
Sony’s next-generation console may be nearing its launch date in some parts of the world, but the Japanese company isn’t forgetting about its aging PlayStation 3 just yet. With an update that’s due to roll out in the next few hours, the PS3 will no longer limit automatic firmware downloads to PlayStation Plus subscribers, a definite plus for non-paid PlayStation Network users. What’s more, version 4.50 also brings additional privacy settings to trophies and the ability to transfer data from the PS3 to PS Vita via a WiFi connection. It may not be the beefiest of updates, but sometimes keeping things short and sweet is just what the doctor ordered.
Update: 4.50 is now available.

Just moments after baiting Microsoft with the PlayStation 4’s less restrictive DRM policies, Sony announced that existing PlayStation Plus memberships will apply to all Sony gaming devices for no additional fee. “Members will have access to all the benefits across PlayStation 3, Vita and PlayStation 4 for one price,” Tretton explained, sweetening the deal by outing a few of the free titles subscribers could expect to see in the coming year: Don’t Starve, Outlast and Secret Ponchos. Naturally, Tretton summed up the PS Plus’ major services as a steal at $5 a month — just remember to buy in bulk, kids.

At the beginning of 2013, Sony announced it would be welcoming EPIX into its stable of video streaming applications for both its PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. It took nearly three months since their original announcement, but EPIX is finally available on the PlayStation 3 starting today.
EPIX, just like other premium cable channels, will require you to be a subscriber of its service in order for you to get everything it has to offer. PSN users are able to check out EPIX for free through a 14-day trial, although EPIX will be offering a new movie for free to PlayStation Plus subscribers, regardless if they’re a subscriber to their video service or not. If you’ve been on the fence whether to be a PS Plus member or not, now would be a pretty good time to sign up for the service. (more…)

Sony’s PlayStation Plus service has played an important role for the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita as the company’s paid PlayStation Network service has delivered more to its subscribers than competing services, such as Microsoft’s Xbox Live. Seeing how the PlayStation 4 was revealed last week, we were pretty sure Sony had some plans to integrate PS Plus with their new console.
Sony Europe CEO Jim Ryan was interviewed by the PlayStation Blog and reassured potential PlayStation 4 buyers the company hasn’t forgotten PlayStation Plus. “We’re not yet in a position to disclose our plans for the future of PlayStation Plus,” Ryan says in the interview, “but there will definitely be a prominent role to play for it in the PlayStation 4 landscape.”
Gamers shouldn’t be absolutely surprised by Ryan’s remarks as the service has done exceptionally well, especially since it isn’t necessary to be a subscriber in order to play online multiplayer games or enjoy services like Netflix or Hulu. Not only that, but this week’s mention of multiple subscription levels made us think Sony would continue making PlayStation Plus available when the PlayStation 4 releases.

Sony’s PlayStation 4, expected to be previewed at an event in NYC today, will hit the US market by November, insiders claim, with two variants of the console in the pipeline and support for remote smartphone control. The gaming rig, internally codenamed “Orbis”, will be tentatively priced at $429 and $529 for the two different iterations, Kotaku‘s source says, with the PlayStation Eye camera included as standard.
The console will also support local network play, for those with a PS Vita, but it’s the remote smartphone support that could be most interesting. According to the source – who apparently previously leaked the codenames for the new Sony and Microsoft consoles – the PS4 will hook up to your smartphone or tablet, and then support remote chat with friends and purchases of new games and content, which will be downloaded straight to the console.
Those downloads will be from the PlayStation World, the newly-branded online counterpart to the PS4 hardware, and the replacement for PlayStation Plus. In fact, “most” of the PS4′s online features will demand a subscription, the insider claims, much as Microsoft demands today with Xbox LIVE.
Elsewhere, there’s believed to be a “spectating” system built into PlayStation World, that will allow owners to remotely watch their friends gameplay, without taking part in the game itself. Official pricing for the console is expected to be confirmed later in 2013, potentially at the mid-year E3 expo.
Speculation about the PlayStation 4 has been rife in recent weeks, with talk of virtualized back-catalog support and Gaikai-powered streaming gaming. There have also been several controller leaks – including the new image above – which have tipped a touchpad section for more precise control in certain titles, as well as for navigating menus.
We’ll know more later today, when Sony kicks things off in New York City. SlashGear will be there to bring you all the details.

PlayStation Plus users have a new update incoming tomorrow, and if you’re subscribed, it’s one you’ll probably want to pay attention to. That’s because Guardians of Middle Earth – the multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) title based in the Lord of the Rings universe – will be free for members. Guardians of Middle Earth was just recently released too, so PS Plus users are getting a relatively new game on the house with this update.
For those of you unfamiliar with Guardians of Middle Earth, think of it as League of Legends with Lord of the Rings characters. There’s a little more to it than that, of course, but you get the idea. Normally Guardians of Middle Earth is $14.99, so while it isn’t a full retail release, you’re still saving a decent chunk of change by picking this up free.
Guardians of Middle Earth isn’t the only deal on tap though, as Sony will also be offering Karateka for PS3 at 50% off, bringing it down to $5.00. Big Sky Infinity and Knytt Underground, both for PS3 and PS Vita, are also seeing their prices slashed by 40%. Big Sky Infinity has come down to $5.99 for this promotion, while Knytt Underground will be $8.99. It’s worth pointing out that both of titles are cross buy enabled, meaning that if you buy it on one platform, you’ll get it on the other.
As always, you’ll only have access to the free games you download for as long as you’re a PlayStation Plus subscriber, which would be the catch to this otherwise great deal. Sony is currently running a promotion on PS Plus memberships, giving three free months to everyone who buys a year. The PS Plus update will be going live on February 5 – are you excited, or does this latest round of deals leave something to be desired?
