Polaroid’s XS80 action camera records adventures in 1080p, whether you’re shaking or not

Polaroid's XS80 action camera shoots 1080p, no shaking required

Polaroid‘s come a long way since, well, Polaroid. Now its portfolio includes retro devices, tablets and action cameras. It’s that last category we’re interested in today, as the company just announced a new shooter, the Polaroid XS80. The credentials break down thus: HD recording in 1080p and 720p and VGA, waterproof to 30 feet, 16- 5- and 3-megapixel still modes and 120 degrees FOV. The barrel-bodied camera also includes a G sensor for auto rotation, plus anti-shake technology, a memory card slot (good for 32GB) and an HDMI socket. The price ($130 including helmet mount) puts this just below the XS100 model, but if this is just the right level of extreme for you, the good news is it’s available now.

Socialmatic Camera Going from Concept to Reality

Remember the Socialmatic camera concept by ADR-Studio? It’s been almost a year since they unveiled the instant camera basically takes Instagram to a whole new level. It took a while, but they’re going ahead with production for the Socialmatic, which is expected to launch early next year.

That said, a few changes are in order. The Socialmatic will no longer be exclusively linked to Instagram (for obvious reasons), but will instead allow users to share their snaps on Socialmatic’s own network or on the usual social media channels, like Twitter, Facebook, and of course, Instagram. What sets the camera apart is that it’ll come with an internal printer, so you can print your favorite photos instantly and wherever you want to.

The Socialmatic camera will will run on Android and come with 16GB of internal storage. It will also be equipped with Wi-Fi, 3G and Bluetooth connectivity, GPS, as well as have an SC-HD slot for external storage. It’s also expected to have a large 4:3 ratio LCD viewfinder which takes up almost the entire back of the camera, and offer true optical zoom.

In case you were wondering about the branding, the Socialmatic team is currently working with Polaroid to help bring the camera to market, though there’s currently no final agreement for them to produce the camera. No pricing information has been made available yet.

Socialmatic to make Polaroid-branded Instagram digital camera

In 2012, ADR Studio created a Socialmatic Instagram concept camera, which is now set to become a reality. Socialmatic announced earlier this week that it signed an MoU agreement with C&A Licensing allowing it to make a Poloroid digital camera with instant printing capabilities. All the details are still unknown, but you can see the concept image after the jump.

Official details, such as its design and specifications, haven’t been finalized, but word has it the camera will be launched in 2014. Along with the device will be a line of accessories specific to it, such as filters, lenses, and camera bags. This indicates the company expects the device to be popular, a reasonable expectation given the enthusiasm that spread across the Internet when the concept was produced.

If the camera follows closely to the concept, users can expect a generously-sized 4.3-inch touchscreen display on the back, as well as 16GB of internal storage. The device will print instant photographs from an integrated printer. Connectivity could then be comprised of both Bluetooth and standard Wi-Fi. It is reasonable to assume the on-board operating system could be Android, although everything is speculation at this point.

Socialmatic’s CEO Antonio De Rosa said: “We are so proud to work together with C & A and Polaroid, giants of digital photography. It has been a long and difficult negotiation but we were strongly motivated to reach an agreement to create a small revolution in digital photography. This mix of Hardware and Software, together with our brand new photo social network will fill the gap between virtuality and reality.”

Polaroid to make Socialmatic Camera a reality for selfaware Instagram fans

Instagram owes its distinctive identity to Polaroid’s OneStep cameras; it’s now time to return the favor. Socialmatic has signed a deal for a production, Polaroid-branded version of its 2012 Socialmatic Camera concept you see above, which translates the mobile app’s retro icon to a real-world, instant-print shooter. While technical details are scarce, the agreement will see accessory maker C&A Marketing build and sell the design sometime in the first quarter of 2014. If the finished Polaroid work is anything like the concept, it could be more than a novelty with its interchangeable lens system, 4.3-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, WiFi and 16GB of storage. We don’t know if the camera will ship with Android, but we hope it does — there would be an appropriately Xzibit-like aspect to running Instagram on top of an Instagram-shaped camera.

PolaPros Offer Vintage Polaroid Instant Cameras from the 70s and 80s

Growing up, it wasn’t a holiday or a special event unless there were at least two Polaroid cameras whirring and spitting out instant pictures. If you grew up in the 70s or 80s, you probably owned one or more of these cameras, or at least your parents did. These cameras all spewed out little white-bordered pictures that developed themselves. I bet your mom’s photo album is stuffed full of these pictures right now.

If you like to the looks of these retro-style images these cameras produced, a company called PolaPros has 12 classic Polaroid instant camera models available for purchase.

Most of the cameras are refurbished units, but the company does offer some brand-new never sold vintage cameras still in the original packaging. Along with the cameras, the company also offers a wide range of accessories including lenses, camera cases, and external flash units.

All of this retro goodness will cost you though. Camera prices range from approximately $395 to $700(USD) – significantly more than their original $180 to $399 retail prices. If you have one of these Polaroid instant cameras lying around that doesn’t work, the company can also clean or fix it for you, with prices starting at about $80. One required accessory that I don’t see listed on the PolaPros site is film, which you can purchase from The Impossible Project for about $24 a pack.

If you grew up in the 70s or 80s, someone you know had one of the Polaroid instant cameras. Odds are your parents had one of these instant cameras and you and your siblings probably fought over who got to shake the picture until it developed. If you would like to own one of these instant cameras again, a company called PolaPros is now offering a wide range of refurbished units.

If you are ready own one of the Polaroid instant cameras that doesn’t work, they can also repair it for you. Repair services start at $80. The company offers 12 different camera models to purchase including the SX-70 Original all the way through the SLR690. Pricing for the complete camera starts at $350.

The company also offers some new vintage cameras that were never sold and are still in the original factory packaging. A brand-new SX-70 Original will set you back $515. A refurbished version of the same camera costs $395. Pricing for the cameras varies greatly depending on the model you choose.

The company also offers a number of accessories for these cameras including external flash units, cases, remote shutter buttons, and various lenses. One key item that I don’t see listed is film for the cameras. This might not be a big deal to vintage camera buffs who only want to collect the camera itself, but if you want to shoot pictures you’ll have to source your own film.

Polaroid iM1836 Runs On Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

polaroid camera Polaroid iM1836 Runs On Android 4.1 Jelly BeanIt was sometime near Christmas when we talked about the Polaroid iM1836 digital camera that will most likely be introduced at CES 2013, and here we are with more details (albeit a wee bit late) about this shooter. Basically, the Polaroid iM1836 is an 18-megapixel camera that was specially designed to adhere to the Micro Four Thirds format standards, making it compatible with the fast growing ecosystem of lenses that are readily available in the market.

Another point of note that should make the Polaroid iM1836 stand out from the rest of the shooters in the market – it is an Android-powered device, running on the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system with a 3.5″ touchscreen display located at the back. Polaroid has slapped a $399 price tag on the Polaroid iM1836, where it will be released in the US sometime in the second quarter of the year, followed by an European release shortly after. The Android ecosystem and Micro Four Thirds working hand in hand does seem to shape up to be a pretty formidable tag team, don’t you think so? [Press Release]
