Impossible Instant Lab iPhone photo booth hands-on (video)

Life’s hard when you’re an analog enthusiast in the early 21st century. Thankfully, however, you’re not alone in this world — there are fellow travelers like the folks behind The Impossible Project, folks who bought a Polaroid factory to continue production on the company’s famed instant film. As we noted roughly a week ago, the company’s also launched a Kickstarter to create an iPhone-friendly gadget to go along with it. It’s since handily met its goal and is still chugging along at around $440,000 (from a proposed $250,000), with a full 19 days to go. The company also made an appearance on the show floor here at Photokina to show off what its been working on.

The Impossible Instant Lab is still in the prototype stages, as with a number of devices we’ve seen here today — though it’s fully operational. We got a demo of the thing from one of the folks at Impossible — just load the film into the rollers on the bottom, extend the old timey accordion top, choose the proper settings in the company’s iPhone app and place it in the holder.

Impossible Instant Lab offers Polaroid stills from your iPhone snaps

The Impossible Project isn’t content with restarting Polaroid’s abandoned instant film production; it also has a Kickstarter, offering a decidedly odd-looking way of getting instant prints from your iPhone. Rather than plugging in via the dock connector, as we’ve seen other mobile printers do, the Impossible Instant Lab takes an altogether more accordion-like approach, basically slapping the iPhone on top of a modified Polaroid camera base.

A collapsable bellows-style assembly extends, to sit your iPhone – or, indeed, any other smartphone with a sizable display – on top. At the bottom there’s a manual shutter and the guts of a Polaroid camera: to use it, you load up the Instant Lab app, pick the photo you want a hard copy of, and slide open the shutter.

There’s a signal to indicate when the exposure – powered only by the phone’s own backlight – is ready, and then it’s a case of closing the shutter and pushing the button; the photo itself is spat out the front. The battery is doog for up to 150 shots, and you can use Polaroid 600 and SX 70 film.

Although it seems a bit gimmicky, it’s obviously found appeal with enough Kickstarter backers: they’ve already pushed it past the $250,000 goal by more than $55k, with 25 days left to run. Mass production should start in mid-February 2013, and the retail price will be $299.

Impossible Instant Lab Turns Your Digital Images into Polaroid Photos

Nothing is truly impossible, not if you’ve got the Impossible Team on your side. They’re known for producing instant films for Polaroid cameras when Polaroid officially shut their factories down.

Now they’ve come up with another first that instant photography lovers will love: the Impossible Instant Lab.

Impossible Instant Lab1The Instant Lab is literally the first and only one of its kind in the world. What it does is take the digital images on your iPhone and turn them into instant Polaroid prints. Who knew that was actually even possible?

Apparently, these guys did. All you have to do is fire up the Instant Lab app, put the phone in the cradle, and slide the shutter on the base of the device open. Wait a few minutes while it does its thing and presto! The instant physical copy of your digital photo will be ejected all retro and awesome-looking.

The Impossible Instant Lab is currently up for funding on Kickstarter, where a minimum pledge of $229(USD) will get you your very own Instant Lab unit. If you hurry, you can become one of the Early Birds who can get the Instant Lab for just $189.

Going back to a physical medium isn’t just for vinyl lovers. The Impossible Project (TIP) wants to make our iPhone photos equally concrete through its extra-simple Impossible Instant Lab. Don’t worry about setting up AirPrint or otherwise jumping through software hoops: the Lab captures the screen and prints it to Polaroid-compatible instant film as a keepsake. The design is even collapsible and battery-powered in the event you’d like to hand out hard copies on the spot. It’s no hobbyist effort, either, with a Leica designer and a former Polaroid factory both involved in making the Lab a reality. TIP is planning to move beyond its initial iPhone 4 and 4S support to include future iPhones and, if all goes well, more commonplace Android hardware.

Investing in this Kickstarter project sidesteps novelties like t-shirts in favor of the real product — and provides a very strong incentive to buy early. Backers quick on the trigger can pay as little as $149 for a Lab with a voucher for free film, or about half the $299 retail price. Pay the full cost and you’ll get a special black version with an extra voucher, while $2,000 will provide both a gold edition and a trip to the ex-Polaroid factory in Enschede, The Netherlands. Cameras could be in retro photographers’ hands as soon as February, but only if TIP reaches its $250,000 funding goal by October 8th. If your parents would like a little more than a Facebook photo gallery as a souvenir, or Instagram just isn’t nostalgic enough, you can hit the source link to show support and make the Instant Lab real.

Polaroid Z2300 instant digital camera

Polaroid has just announced their latest instant digital camera, the Polaroid Z2300. Of course, we do know that Polaroid has long been the name in terms of instant photos, and here we are with their latest interpretation of the instant digital camera – which is the Z2300. Just how does the Z2300 work? For starters, it will rely on the tried and tested integrated printer with ZINK Technology, allowing users to instantly capture, edit and take less than 60 seconds to print full color, 2″ by 3” prints. Not only that, it is also a snap for you to upload images to any social media platform with the Z2300, where everything required to do all that has been mentioned has been crammed into a form factor which is extremely compact.

The camera will come in white and black shades, where it is a 10-megapixel shooter that is accompanied by a decent 3” LCD display, which is a snap to frame and review images, while letting you shoot video in just about any setting. You can choose to print your images with the iconic Polaroid Classic Border Logo, or opt to have it go full bleed. The ZINK prints are all smudge-proof, thanks to a water-resistant coating.

Polaroid President Scott W. Hardy, said, “Polaroid invented instant photography, and for the past 75 years the brand has been synonymous with instant gratification, ease-of-use and fun. The Z2300 represents the next step in the evolution of that proud tradition and it was designed to fully integrate the classic Polaroid instant photography experience into today’s digital, social world. Portability, creative expression and the ability to share your most memorable moments in digital or print form all come standard in the Polaroid Z2300 camera’s compact body.”

Polaroid has priced the Polaroid Z2300 instant digital camera at $159.99, where you ought to have it accompanied by 50-sheet packs of 2″ x 3” Premium ZINK Paper that goes for $24.99, and those who opt for 30-sheet packs will fork out less at $14.99.

Polaroid Z2300 Instant Camera: Bye Bye Instagram? Probably Not

Are you one of the many that were saddened by the demise of Polaroid’s classic instant cameras? Well they’ve just released information about their new digital instant camera, that includes a printer so that you can print out all of your snapshots wherever you are. The device is pretty compact, so it might be an interesting solution.

The Polaroid Z2300 instant digital camera was unveiled at the 2012 CEA show. It has a 10 MP sensor and a built-in zero ink pinter, which can produce 2″ × 3″  prints in under a minute, with full bleed or the classic Polaroid border. It can also print on sticker-backed paper. The camera stores the photos on an SD card so you can use it like a regular digital camera too. There’s also editing software that allows you to review and crop photos on the 3″ LCD screen.

Polaroid Z2300 digital camera now up for pre-order, prints your photos in under a minute

Prior to the age of digital cameras, there was the Polaroid. A camera that was by no means portable, but it had the novelty and the convenience of being able to print photos out on the spot as opposed to having to take it to be developed. Perhaps looking to remain relevant in today’s day and age of digital cameras, Polaroid has revealed the Z2300 digital camera. Shaped and designed to look like today’s digital cameras, the Z2300 still retains the signature feature of its predecessors, which is its ability to print photos on the fly. However instead of printing photos that requires the photographer to shake it to let it develop (Polaroid users back in the day know what I’m talking about), it will instead be printed via an integrated printer.

It is capable of producing 2×3” prints using Zero Ink printing technology which allows the images printed to be both moisture and UV resistant, smudge proof and is also expected to be longer lasting (although well-kept Polaroid photos back in the day still retain some of the color and quality). The camera itself features a 10MP sensor and a 3” LCD display on its rear. It will also come with 32GB of internal storage and will be bundled with 4GB of external storage and will support SD cards of up to 32GB. It also has the ability to capture HD video. Priced at $159.99, the camera is up for pre-order and will begin shipping this August. The Zero Ink paper can also be bought in either 50-sheet packs or 30-sheet packs and are priced at $24.99 and $14.99 respectively.

Polaroid unveils Z2300 Instant Digital Camera

I think anyone that grew up in the 80s will remember the Polaroid instant cameras that spit the picture out of the front. I know when I was growing up we always thought watching those pictures develop was the coolest thing ever. Polaroid has a new instant camera called the Z2300 Instant Digital Camera that is a modern version of that 80s instant camera.

The Z2300 has an integrated ZINK Technology printer inside the digital camera that allows you to take digital photos, and then print a 2 x 3-inch hard copy immediately. The digital camera can also upload images to social media sites such as Facebook. The camera comes in two colors, including black and white.

The camera resolution is 10-megapixels and has a three-inch LCD on the back so you can preview the image before you print. The printer integrated into the camera uses no ink. The paper the ZINK printer uses is a composite material that has cyan, yellow, and magenta dye crystals embedded in paper. The printer uses heat to activate and colorize the crystals to deliver a clear and vibrant print in less than a minute. The Z2300 camera is priced at $159.99. The 2 x 3″ ZINK paper sells for $24.99 for 50 sheets, and a 30-sheet pack is available for $14.99.

Polaroid Z2300 hands-on

Polaroid Z2300 hands-on

Polaroid. The brand is iconic, to put it lightly. In the post film age however, the company has fought to stay relevant without completely sacrificing its identity at the altar of the digital photography gods. The solution has been cramming printers inside the bodies of its shooters (and partnering with questionably talented celebrities), hoping to recreate the experience of instantly coping a glossy copy to hang or hand out, while co-opting the benefits of the megapixel. The Z2300 is the latest in its effort to claim a chunk of the casual photography market. This 10 megapixel printer cam produces 2 x 3-inch prints that are also stickers in about 30-45 seconds. It’s not quite as quick as the Polaroids of old, but at least you don’t have to shake em.
