Portal Arriving On NVIDIA Shield

Portal Arriving On NVIDIA ShieldFor those of you who happen to own the NVIDIA Shield handheld gaming console, here is some news for you. It seems that Valve’s Portal is currently in the works for the NVIDIA Shield, and as for the release date, no exact date has been revealed just yet although NVIDIA did mention that the first-person puzzle game will arrive “soon”. “Soon” is the operative keyword here, as it can be relative.

DIY Portal Sentry Turret Doesn’t Blame You for Drawing on It

If you ever looked at one of the white Portal sentry turrets and thought it was a blank canvas waiting for a Sharpie, you will love this. ThinkGeek has an 8-inch vinyl DIY sentry turret that comes with an official Aperture Corporation black permanent marker.

That means one mistake and you are SOL. I would be more impressed if the surface of the turret could be wiped clean so you could doodle repeatedly. The turret replica is made from vinyl so perhaps if you had a dry erase marker, you could wipe it clean. That, or you could always hit it with a Thermal Discouragement Beam.

The toy is an officially licensed Portal 2 figure. It sells for $19.99(USD) and is available for your doodling pleasure right now.

3D Printed Jumbo LEGO Minifigs: Children of the Corn Starch

LEGO opened Cuusoo to let fans pitch ideas for play sets. But if you have a 3D printer, you don’t have to wait and beg for a minifig of your favorite character. Just do what Michael “Skimbal” Curry did and make the minifigs yourself. Skimbal even made his minifigs four times larger than the official LEGO citizens.

Skimbal started with a blank jumbo minifig and went wild from there. Although he hasn’t shared new models for about a month now, he already has several popular characters ready for you to download.

See that headcrab zombie minifig? Half-life 3 is a better bet than an official LEGO version of that. Or maybe not. I may be underestimating Valve Time. Print a browser then head to Thingiverse to download Skimbal’s minifig 3D models.

Portal 2 PotatOS Plush lights up in a cute way

portal-potato-plushAre potatoes your favorite food? After all, there is nothing quite like some piping hot fries with vinegar and salt on the side. Oh yeah, how about those moments when you are munching on your favorite brand of chips in the cinema? The movie certainly felt a whole lot more engaging, don’t you think so? Well, with the $19.99 Portal 2 PotatOS Plush, you can be sure that you will never look at a jacket or stuffed potato the same way again. This is the huggable version of GLaDOS, and it will arrive with 10 audio clips to get you started.

Fret not about your friends ribbing you about purchasing a rip off or a pirated copy of some Portal-inspired toys, as this is a 100% officially licensed Portal 2 merchandise. The Portal 2 PotatOS Plush resembles the tuber-version of GLaDOS that you actually brought with you around the testing facility in the game, and what’s more, it also sounds a whole lot like her. I am quite sure that Portal fans would have plenty of fun with the pre-loaded 10 snarky phrases that are more than ready to be spoken whenever you press the button. At least this is one potato that is not oily, so it would settle in with the rest of your bed’s plushies quickly. Just make sure there are always a trio of AA batteries around to keep it going.

GLaDOS Cosplay is a Huge Success

When you see cosplayers, sometimes you look beyond the beauty of their costumes and realize that many of these people combine art with sheer effort. Some costumes are not worn, but endured. I think I could say the same for this amazing GLaDOS cosplay by Athena Cole aka Enayla, who had herself suspended five feet off the ground to emulate the Portal villain’s appearance.

Enayla presented her cosplay at the 2013 PAX Prime and was so eye-catching that she had to be moved to another hall more suited to gawking at GLaDOS. Here’s a better look at her costume taken by Count3D, which includes the PVC structure that she’s hanging from.

On her blog, Enayla said she stayed up in 40 to 45 min. increments and took lots of breaks. By the end of the day, she reckons she spent a total of four and a half hours in GLaDOS’ nonexistent shoes. Here’s her in-costume interview with Invader Boom:

Enayla should use a voice modulator so she could talk like GLaDOS.

Portal Nintendo DS Homebrew: Aperture Science Handheld Portal Playing Device

The Nintendo DS has many puzzle and platforming games, but I bet not many DS owners expected this nice surprise. A small group of fans are working on Aperture Science, an adaptation of Valve’s hit game Portal for the Nintendo DS.

GBATemp forum member Smealum is handling Aperture Science’s code while his buddy Lobo is working on the game’s graphics. According to Smealum, the goal is to make an original campaign with deranged scientist Doug Rattman as the hero. The game will also come with a level editor to extend replayability. Here’s a brief look at Aperture Science:

It even has its own cover art!

Aperture Science is not a lie. It’s a work in progress though. You can download a playable build on Smealum’s website, but you need a flash cart and a program called NitroFS to play Aperture Science.
