Hershey’s and 3DSystems to Offer 3D Printers for Chocolate

Chocolate. It may arguably be better than bacon. And today we have some important chocolate news. Hershey has just announced a partnership with 3DSystems to produce a 3D printer that prints in chocolate. Imagine chocolate shaped like anything, maybe even with a hollow caramel maze inside or something.

This isn’t 3DSystems first foray into printing candy – they showed off some amazing printers that could output both sugar and chocolate candy models at the recent 2014 CES:

We don’t know when they will have their new Willy Wonka device ready or how much it might cost, but the ChefJet will sell for less than $5,000 and the ChefJet will go for less than $10,000. No word on the Hershey’s version though. You guys just feel free to throw everything you have at this project. Humanity is counting on you.

I can’t wait for finely detailed chocolate Star Trek starships to start rolling out of this machine. The possibilities are endless.

LG Pocket Photo 2.0 launched

lg-pocketphotoLG, the South Korean consumer electronics giant, has just announced that they will be showcasing their LG Pocket Photo 2.0 over at CES 2014 that is kicking off in less than a fortnight’s time. This will be the second iteration of their original Pocket Photo device, where it will offer enhanced portability thanks to its form factor, letting you customize, print and share images regardless of where you are. Just what kind of connectivity options will the latest LG Pocket Photo 2.0 come with? It features wireless connectivity such as NFC and Bluetooth, allowing you to instantly print 2” x 3” photos from majority of the tablets and smartphones that are in use today. Not only that, it will also play nice with Android and iOS devices, which should cover a fair bit of ground – although Windows Phone and BlackBerry owners would miss out on the Pocket Photo boat.

Touted to be one of the smallest mobile photo printing devices on the market, this most recent version would have shaved off 4mm from its predecessor in terms of thickness, and yet it does not affect its performance at all. On the contrary, the LG Pocket Photo 2.0 would be able to print pictures rendered at a crystal clear 313dpi, which makes them perfect for sharing or displaying. You will first need to download and install the free Pocket Photo editing app though, so that you will be able to print right off the bat after connecting your smartphone or tablet to it sans wires.

LG has also gone the extra mile to introduce enhancements to the editing features in the accompanying Pocket Photo app, paving the way for you to experiment with an expanded range of customization options. There is a new set of filter effects thrown into the mix as well, in addition to a clever frame augmentation feature. Not only that, you can also opt to embed QR codes in photos, making it a convenient method to connect a physical photograph with an online community or an Internet-based content. ZINK’s inkless paper system will deal with the photo printing process, and a single full charge of the LG Pocket Photo 2.0 delivers up to 30 photo prints.

Eggbot Holiday Ornament Designs: Merry Eggmas

The Eggbot is an art robot that can draw on spherical or ovoid surfaces. Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories originally made the Eggbot to decorate Easter eggs, but because the robot can accommodate any ball or egg-shaped object between 1.25″ to 4.25″ in diameter, you can also use it to decorate Christmas ornaments. Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories is giving away a pack of holiday designs to give Eggbot owners a head start.

The Eggbot Holiday Super Pak includes all of the designs shown in the image above and more. Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories recommends that you use ornaments with a satin finish. They’re easier for Eggbot to grip and their surface contrasts nicely with marker ink. You may not get vivid drawings on transparent or shiny ornaments.

Desktop 3D Printer (hopefully) makes 3D printing more affordable

desktop-3d-printerWhat do you think of the world of 3D printers? Most of us would figure out that chances are, having one of these puppies at home would definitely be expensive. After all, it is far from being the equivalent of printing using an inkjet printer or laser printer. Well, perhaps the $1,300 Desktop 3D Printer might actually change your mind when you take a look at it. This unique Desktop 3D Printer has already picked up the gong from Popular Mechanic for the Breakthrough Award category, where it is capable of delivering exact, three-dimensional reproductions of objects.

To ensure that you will not be out of ideas to start off with, there are available, more than a thousand free designs, ranging from an iPhone case to a bracelet, and also for those who have a love for archeology, the Sphinx of Hatshepsut can be downloaded from a website. The Desktop 3D Printer itself will extrude 1/125″-thin layers of warm, viscous thermoplastic which will harden in a matter of seconds, resulting in it forming a solid, three-dimensional meticulous reproduction. The kind of 3D printouts will be able to measure anywhere up to 5 1/2″ cu., and if you are on the lookout for the more intricate designs which require reinforcement during printing, the device is smart enough to incorporate plastic supports automatically.

These plastic supports can subsequently be removed whenever the print is completed. Your design files are exported to the printer over a Wi-Fi connection, or to use the included USB flash drive as well as printer’s touchscreen control panel so that you can optimize print settings. Once you feel more comfortable with the Desktop 3D Printer, you can always opt to purchase and download additional designs from the website itself, or to use three-dimensional modeling software of your own to generate them. Perhaps this is the kind of catalyst that you need to spruce up your gadget life, eh?

EnerGenie ePP2 E-paper Printer Never Runs out of E-ink

Many programs provide an option to save or “print” documents as PDF files, but transferring or accessing the PDF on the go will require a couple of extra steps. You may have to sync your tablet with your computer or cloud service, mail the document or copy it on a flash drive. EnerGenie has a simpler solution: just print on E-ink.

energenie epp2 e paper printermagnify

The EnerGenie ePP2 is a specialized ebook reader. When you connect it to a computer via USB, it will be recognized as a printer. Print as you would normally, but select the ePP2 as your printer to send your document to the device. You can then view your file on the ePP2′s 9.7″ 1600 x 1200 E-ink display. Use its stylus if you need to fill out forms, append your signature or make notes. It also has a complementary program that lets you send a document from the ePP2 back to a computer as a PDF file.

According to Liliputing, the ePP2 will be sold for around €399 to €499 (~$540 to $670 USD). Ultimately I wouldn’t recommend it at this point. It’s way too expensive , it has limited features – it doesn’t even have network connectivity – and as I said, you can go paperless with practically any tablet and a couple of extra steps. But I think the idea behind it is quite promising. Hopefully its future versions will be significantly cheaper or more versatile.

Ask Engadget: best mobile printer?

Ask Engadget best mobile printer

We know you’ve got questions, and if you’re brave enough to ask the world for answers, then here’s the outlet to do so. This week’s Ask Engadget inquiry is from Ryan, who needs a device that’ll save him time out on the job. If you’re looking to ask one of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

“Hi. I’m an electrician that travels around in a van all day. Right now, I can either write receipts by hand or email to my customers after the fact. Is there any printer that I can use in the van and print from a phone or tablet? I only need to print out black and white on standard 8.5-inch by 11-inch paper, but nothing online seems to be what I need. Any help you can provide would be great, thanks!”

Well Ryan, we always feel a bit icky recommending printers, since we all know that they are the devil’s work, but you’ve got a specific need, so we shall do our best. Assuming you can grab a power inverter and therefore use any consumer-level printer that runs WiFi Direct or AirPrint (if you have an iOS device). Some examples include Brother’s HL5470DW or the HP 1102W. Beyond that? Well it’s time to turn this shebang over to our commenters, who will be happy to share some knowledge.
