Ask Engadget: best next-gen console projector?

Ask Engadget best nextgen console projector

We know you’ve got questions, and if you’re brave enough to ask the world for answers, then here’s the outlet to do so. This week’s Ask Engadget inquiry is from “Eager Gamer,” who has asked a question that’s appeared more than a few times in our inbox over the last month. If you’re looking to ask one of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

“With next-gen consoles around the corner, could you please help me out with some of the best gaming projectors to choose from? I’m looking for something in the $2,000 – $2,500 in the price range. Thanks for any and all advice you can offer, as buying my first projector is much harder than I thought it’d be.”

Never fear Easy Gamer, as we’d rather you ask us than run the risk of buying a bad gadget. On the upside, both the Xbone and PS4 will support 4K video (the Xbone will also be able to run games in 4K where supported). On the downside, the cheapest 4K projector is more than ten times your top budget.

So instead, let’s look at a high quality projector that you can grab that is within budget. Sony’s VPLHW30ES, for instance, offers 3D projection, a 1,300 lumens bulb an HDMI-in for $2,500, while ViewSonic’s PRO9000 can be snapped up for $1,800. Still, those are just two options from us — we’re reasonably sure that the Engadget community can suggest something even more suited to your tastes.

Sony Announces New Projectors At CEDIA 2013

Sony Announces New Projectors At CEDIA 2013Sony has decided to introduce a trio of new SXRD projectors at CEDIA 2013, where among them include a couple of 4K models as well as a Full HD model for the masses. Of course, having plenty of money is one thing, but to know what to do with it is another, and for those who feel like flirting with a new projector simply because they have the means to might want to check out the brand new VPL-VW1100ES and VPL-VW600ES. Both of these will offer a DCI-approved 4,096 x 2,160 pixel resolution, where the VPL-VW1100ES remains at the top of the range projector from Sony as it arrives with a bundled 4K player, an in-home service visit, a replacement lamp and tablet controller – all for a cool $28,000, of course.

As for the VPL-VW600ES, it will be pretty much similar to the model that was introduced in Europe back in October, touting a wallet bustin’ $15,000 price tag, too, with the option to bundle it with a tablet controller. Of course, for those who do not have the kind of bottomless wallet or bank account to draw from, there is the Full HD capable VPL-HW55ES model that delivers enhanced optical efficiency and an improved cooling system. Laser Twilight Stars Projector brings the planetarium experience home

laserstarSo your little one loves to go stargazing, and sometimes, you wish that you were able to provide him or her with as many number of trips possible when night falls and all the stars come out to play. Well, it is a good thing that technology has advanced to a point where you can purchase a substitute, although do bear in mind that at the end of the day, it will never be able to amount to the real deal. The $169.99 Laser Twilight Stars Projector might not be astronomically accurate, but it does allow your entire room, ceiling and walls resemble that of a beautiful night sky as it projects green laser stars and blue clouds.

Works best whenever you turn the lights off (but of course!), and it is really fantastic to figure out that a device like this, where it measures approximately 10” in height, is capable of projecting a combination of green laser stars and blue clouds onto your ceiling, walls, and heck, you might even make that constantly sleeping dog of yours as a “screen” of sorts, too! The clouds as well as stars will look as though they are constantly on the move and morphing from one shape to another, depicting a universe that is “alive”, and thousands of green laser stars to bowl yourself over.

Sony Projector Gets Frickin’ Laser Beam

Somebody needs to get a hold of Doctor Evil quickly and let him know that his evil lair needs a new projector for the media room. Sony has announced that it is now shipping the world’s first 3LCD projector with a laser light source. Yes that’s right, it’s a projector with frickin’ lasers.

Rather than using the normal bulbs that are expensive and burnout rather quickly, or dim low-end LEDs, the Sony VPL-FHZ55 laser light source projector uses a blue laser as its light source. You may be wondering how blue laser can reproduce full-color. The answer to that is a phosphorescent material that outputs pure white light when the laser shines through it. Once the white light is produced, 3LCD tech turns it into the colors you need for a high-quality image.

The projector offers an impressive 4,000 lumens of color light output and supports a resolution of 1920 x 1200. Sony estimates that the laser unit will provide 20,000 hours of use before it needs to be replaced.

There’s no indication of how expensive the VPL-FHZ55 might be, though I found one for sale via Amazon’s Marketplace for about $6500(USD).

Sony VPL-VW500ES projector offers 4K resolution with 1700 lumens

Sony has officially unveiled a new projectors today called the VPL-VW500ES. That projector boasts native 4K resolution and slips into Sony’s lineup next to the VW1000ES, which was the world’s first native 4K resolution projector. The VW500ES uses a DCI based 4096 x 2160 resolution promising the highest quality 4K content possible. This projector uses […]

Alcatel OneTouch intros prototype pico projector docking port (hands-on)

Alcatel OneTouch intros prototype pico projector docking port handson

Pico projectors are swell, but they’re not wildly popular. Very few smartphone manufacturers can find a way to embed them into devices without making them incredibly thick and expensive, and without sucking the battery dry in no time at all — the Samsung Galaxy Beam comes to mind regarding all of the above concerns — and carrying around a separate accessory is just plain impractical and expensive. (Plus, most devices can wirelessly mirror content onto TVs and monitors anyway, making the actual market even more limited.) But what if you could find a clever way of incorporating it into another useful accessory while keeping it small, simple and inexpensive? Well, we’re not sure about the latter qualification, but Alcatel OneTouch is at least keeping an eye on this niche with a new docking station that doubles as an aforementioned pico projector. It’s a prototype accessory that’s compatible with the OneTouch Hero, thanks to its set of magnetic docking contacts on the back — all you have to do is clip it on and the phone recognizes that it’s been attached. The projector is 12Lm, which is a little dimmer than we’d prefer (we were told that the final product may actually be brighter than this, but they can’t confirm for now), and the company claims it can show a screen larger than 70 inches.

Company reps tell us that this nameless accessory isn’t officially coming onto the market just yet, and they’re trying to determine how best to proceed (the Hero’s press release suggests that this for sure will be available later, however, so we’ll take it with a grain of salt at the moment). It’s a clever idea that could come in handy for a number of business travelers who need to carry on impromptu presentations, but price (of both the projector and the phone itself) will be a key factor in its success. Check out a few images below that show off the prototype in all its miniature glory.

Sony’s next 4K projector will be merely expensive, not outrageous

Sony's VPLVW500ES projector brings 4K within reach of rich cinephiles

Sony has just announced the VPL-VW500ES 4K projector at IFA 2013 in Berlin, and though it didn’t name a price, said it’ll be much cheaper than its first 4K projector. Before you start re-arranging your theater room, though, the original VPL-VW1000ES cost a cool $25,000, so “cheaper” might be a relative term. If you’re undeterred, though, you’ll get full 4,096 x 2,160 4K resolution thanks to native 4K SXRD panels — technology that Sony lifted from its commercial cinema projectors. Other perks include 1,700 ANSI-lumen brightness (compared to 2,000 for the VW1000ES), a 200,000:1 contrast ratio, “Super Resolution” Blu-ray to 4K upscaling, Motionflow tech for less blur, and support for HDMI 2.0 — which permits 60fps 4K. Again, Sony hasn’t mentioned a price yet, but we did see it at a French retailer for 10,000 euros, meaning a $10,000 price seems feasible.

Sony also dropped a Full HD 3D model, the VPL-HW55ES projector, which replaces the VPL-HW50ES as its top 1080p dog while using the same SXRD tech. It boasts 1,700 ANSI-lumens, a 120,000:1 contrast ratio, a 5,000 hour lamp, an optical engine upgrade and Reality Creation technology. Both projectors offer wireless HDMI compatibility, and will arrive at some point next month. For more minutiae, check the PR after the break.
