2x3D Lets Viewers Watch 2D and 3D Video on the Same Screen: Picture-on-Picture

The Shirai Lab at the Kanagawa Institute of Technology have developed a way to simultaneously display 2D and 3D video on the same screen without producing a blurry double image. The technology is called 2x3D or Scritter. It uses two projectors to beam the videos and graphics processors that cancel out one of the videos being displayed, so that the 2D video can clearly be seen with the naked eye. The 3D video will become visible once the viewer wears a polarized filter on his right eye.

Kanagawa Institute of Technology Associate Professor Akihiki Shirai noted that their technology also has many other practical applications beyond displaying 2D and 3D video at once. 2x3D can be used to display text in different languages or show different layers of an object, e.g. superimposing the different systems of the body. The drawback to 2x3D is that it results in videos with relatively low contrast, but Shirai also said that that may be countered by using more projectors.

Here’s the first non-Valve Steam Machine prototype, care of iBuyPower

That game console headlining this text? It isn’t a white PS4: it’s a commercial Steam Machines box, or at least a prototype of one. iBuyPower tells us that it’s building the box for a 2014 launch, but says it’s still early. The company says the prototypes are running an early build of Steam OS, but it’s not quite a finished product. That rings true of our impressions of Valve’s own reference model, which hosted a version of that same OS devoid of media playback and streaming options and had a very limited selection of games.

iBuyPower tells us that it actually has two models, codenamed Gordon and Freeman, in the works. The two consoles are identical, save for the light bar round the middle — one model’s is clear, while the other’s is black when not illuminated. And, while the company wouldn’t tell us about the boxes’ internals, it did confirm that the hardware will run all Steam titles in 1080p resolution at 60fps. Not as much info as we’d like to know, but still, it’s good to see hints of what we’ll see from Steam Machines when they hit the market — though we’ll likely have to wait until CES to see them in action.%Gallery-slideshow123245%

inFORM Dynamic Shape Display: Display See, Display Do

The touchscreen and app combo of today’s mobile devices makes one gadget act as many. Different apps display different interfaces, and the touchscreen lets you interact with those interfaces in a natural manner. But what if, aside from changing what you can see, your gadget’s display could also change its shape? That’s what MIT’s Tangible Media Group wants to realize.

What you’re looking at is Tangible Media Group’s inFORM. It’s made of a Kinect, a projector, a computer, pins, linkages and actuators. inFORM can mimic the shape and motion of 3D objects in real time. For example, a monitor can show a two-dimensional replica of your arm, but with inFORM you can have a tangible, 3D replica of your arm. And since it’s 3D you can use that replica arm to carry or move objects just by moving your own arms.

Equally important is inFORM’s ability to act as a collection of 3D pixels, a way of giving physical manifestation to digital information. For instance, it can make actual 3D charts, give you a tangible version of a 3D model in an instant and present even more intuitive user interfaces.

inFORM is a step towards the Tangible Media Group’s dream that it calls Radical Atoms, a “hypothetical generation of materials that can change form and appearance dynamically, becoming as reconfigurable as pixels on a screen… so that dynamic changes of physical form can be reflected in digital states in real time, and vice versa.”

Imagine watching horror films on a Radical Atom TV.  Imagine “holding” your loved ones as you chat with them on Radical Atom walls and floors. Imagine controlling a giant mech made of Radical Atoms. Imagine visualizing mind-boggling equations and predictions on a Radical Atom spreadsheet. Imagine having a physical keyboard or game buttons on your Radical Atom mobile device. Aww yiss.

Valve Demos Steam Controller: Jack of All Games

Yesterday Valve released a video showing a prototype of the Steam Controller – which is designed to be used with the company’s upcoming Steam Machines – being used to play a handful of games. The demo focused on the controller’s “legacy mode”, in which the controller emulates a mouse and a keyboard, letting you map keys and cursor movement to the controller’s buttons, triggers and trackpads.

In the demo, the controller was used to play four mouse-heavy games: Portal, Civilization V, Counter-Strike: G.O. and Papers, Please. The games were chosen to show the accuracy of the trackpads, as well as how well it works with menu-heavy games that were meant to be used with a keyboard and mouse.

As was mentioned in the demo, Valve will release more demos featuring a variety of games. Even if you’ve already decided that the controller isn’t for you, remember that Steam Machines will still support mouse and keyboard combos. In any case I think that the Steam Controller is mainly for console gamers, to get them to try the PC games on Steam. That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if Valve is working on or supporting the development of games that were made with the Steam Controller in mind.

Smart Glasses Translate Japanese Text to Other Languages: for Manga & JRPG Fans

We’ve seen an iOS app that can translate text from one language to another in real-time. The engineers at Japanese telecommunications company NTT DoCoMo thought it would be easier for users if the translator was integrated into a pair of glasses. If I had these the first thing I’d do would be to use it to play all the Super Robot Wars games. Damn you Banprestoooo!

Similar to the voice translator Sigmo, NTT DoCoMo’s prototype needs an Internet connection to be able to translate text. It will then display the translation over the Japanese characters.

2020? There’ll be a billion SRW games by then!

V-Tex Technology Chills Drinks in Seconds: Coldsnap

Microwave ovens let us heat food in seconds. Soon we’ll have a similar device to cool drinks. A British company called Enviro-Cool and its partners are working on a rapid cooling technology called V-Tex. A refrigerator using V-Tex can cool a canned drink in just 45 seconds. Screw hoverboards or jet packs, I want this fast fridge now.

V-Tex refrigerators create rotate cans or bottles while cooling them in water to avoid forming slush. Apparently the fridges rotate drinks in such a way that carbonated drinks won’t build up pressure and explode when opened.

Here’s a chart that shows how fast the prototype can cool drinks. It’s clear that metal cans are the way to go, since they conduct thermal energy much better than glass.

As much as I love novelty ice trays, I’d rather have a cold drink in a jiffy. Let’s hope this technology finds its way to consumer appliances soon.

You know what makes a fuel cell charger in your pocket a little less frightening? Colors! CEATEC mainstay Rohm has arrived back in Japan with a new set of hydrogen-source fuel cell chargers, with the latest prototype lot boasting a litany of new hues that may very well match up with that iPhone 5c you’re (presumably) picking up soon. The actual technology used within hasn’t changed from last year, but the company is evidently considering the release of such portable chargers for those who’d prefer something a bit less drab. We’re told that a fully-fueled pack can keep the average smartphone alive for twice as long as it would otherwise last, but as has become the norm at this show, there’s nary a hint of a price / release date.

Toshiba’s overall TV division may be ailing, but it’s innovations like this that’ll keep it from completely decaying. Displayed at the company’s CEATEC booth here in Japan are two new 4K HDTV displays — the 40-inch 40V and 50-inch 50V. Outside of devilishly-thin bezels and native 4K resolutions, the company’s not talking specifications. What it’s focusing on instead is the concept: it’s dreaming of an Ultra HD range of displays that can operate as televisions and as pro-grade reference monitors. After all, budding editors who are being tasked with cutting together 4K footage certainly deserve a monitor that won’t cut corners, right?

A company representative informed us that while the displays weren’t perfectly color accurate, they were far superior to rivals. Plus, the ability to easily toggle between reference mode and various other living room-accepted modes will enable a level of A/B testing that’s pretty tough to get right now. Naturally, both monitors looked stunning up close, and if we’re being candid, we’re fallen in love with Photoshop all over again after seeing it displayed on these guys.
