PS4 Helped Boost PS Vita Sales In The UK

PS4 Helped Boost PS Vita Sales In The UKEarlier this year, Sony announced their brand new console, the PlayStation 4, and one of the features of the PS4 was the  Remote Play feature which was somewhat similar to what Nintendo had in mind with the Wii U and the GamePad, where gamers could mirror what was being played on the screen onto the handheld console. However given that it wasn’t completely necessary, we wouldn’t have been surprised if PS Vita sales weren’t affected, but boy were we wrong! According to a report by MCV, they claim that sales of the PS Vita actually rose during the PS4’s launch week in the UK.

The numbers state that the Vita’s sales rose by 68% during launch week, and rose again by an additional 65% in the following week. According to Sony’s Senior Product Manager, Ben Law, Vita sales are apparently seeing strong week-on-week growth and pointed at the Remote Play as being a huge incentive for gamers to get their hands on the handheld console, describing it as “either as a stand-alone device or as the perfect companion to PS4.” This is undoubtedly extra money that we’re not sure all gamers would be willing to spend on, but the numbers don’t lie. What do you guys think? Any of you decided to get a Vita for Remote Play?

Sony Dismisses Claims Of PS4 Artificial Scarcity

Sony Dismisses Claims Of PS4 Artificial ScarcityFor those who weren’t quick enough to place a pre-order for the Sony PlayStation 4 and were still slow on the take to go out and buy one upon its release, chances are you will be faced with “sold out” signs at a number of retailers, such as Best Buy and even Toys R Us. For some reason or the other, there have been rumors that the shortages of the PS4 were faked in a bid to help create some excitement during the holiday season which might pique the interest of customers wondering what all the fuss over the console could be about.

According to SCEA CEO, Jack Tretton, he states that claims of artificial scarcity are false and that it would be silly, especially given that competition around the holiday season can get pretty intense. Speaking during the PlayStation Blogcast, Tretton was quoted as saying, “Do you create an artificial shortage because you want there to be a feeding frenzy? No you don’t […] You have competition out there; there are lots of things that people can spend money on, especially during the holidays; and the holidays only come around once a year so that’s really when you want to take advantage of the market opportunity.”

In any case if you were planning on getting the console but have been out of luck, Tretton states that additional PS4 units will be available for customers ahead of the holiday season, and that the next batch of console units should arrive come January-March 2014.

Sony PS4 Reportedly Leading Xbox One Sales For November

Sony PS4 Reportedly Leading Xbox One Sales For NovemberBoth the Sony PS4 and the Microsoft Xbox One are currently battling it out for the number one position. While one might console might do better in another country than the other, it’s a pretty tight race at the moment, although according to the latest figures released by NPD, it has been found that the Sony PS4 has managed to beat out the Microsoft Xbox One next-gen console in terms of sales for the month of November. Unfortunately the NPD did not provide any numbers, instead merely claiming that the PS4 outsold the Xbox One in the US market in November, with “the highest first month sales of a hardware platform on record.”

In all fairness the Sony PS4 did start selling its units about a week ahead of the Xbox One, which might explain why it might have sold more. However NPD does back up Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb’s statement where he claimed that the Xbox One was the fastest selling console, and actually did better on an average per-week basis. In any case both consoles appear to be doing quite well and have managed to sell 1 million units respectively, and have since managed to cross the 2 million mark as well, but for now Sony appears to be leading the pack ,at least as far as November sales are concerned. Perhaps the Xbox One will outdo the PS4 in December, but we guess we will have to wait and see.

Battlefield 4 gets sorely needed patch for Xbox One

Battlefield 4, the pride of EA Games and DICE, has received a long-awaited patch for the Xbox One. The next-gen game has undergone a series of unfortunate events in the form of connectivity problems, server issues, and in-game bugs and glitches. The problems were so bad and so widespread that they dealt EA’s stock a […]

Is in-home multiplayer gaming going to die?

Over the last several weeks, I’ve been hunkered down in my house playing video games. I’ve all but turned my back on previous-generation hardware so I could double down on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 and provide reviews where necessary. While the majority of my time playing new titles has been positive, not everything […]

Dualshock 4 Hack Lets You Use Mouse & Keyboard on PS4: Master Peasant

There are already plug-and-play third-party devices that let you play previous gen consoles or a PC using any of their controllers. For instance, you can use a Wiimote with your PS3 if you want. There’s no equivalent product for the PlayStation 4 just yet, but Marcos Mori de Siqueira of Softfactory is onto something here. He hacked a Dualshock 4 controller to send input from a mouse and keyboard to the PS 4.

playstation 4 dualshock 4 controller mouse keyboard mod by Marcos Mori de Siqueira 620x351magnify

I’m not even going to pretend that I fully understood what Marcos pulled off, but from what I grokked he used a microcontroller (plus two digital-to-analog converters for emulating the thumbsticks) to turn signals from his keyboard – in this case a Logitech Gameboard – and mouse into signals that the PS4 understands, sent via the Dualshock 4′s circuit board. All in all it took him about $50 (USD) of materials and a ton of solder to make the mod. Skip to about 1:55 in the video to see the mod in action.

Check out Marcos’ post on Softfactory for more details on his mod. Seeing as FPS and MMOs are still popular, I wonder why Sony and Microsoft don’t just add support for keyboards and mice on their consoles. They can probably earn extra from certifying third party hardware if they did that. It’ll make it way easier to search for content on their online stores too.
