Twitch cracks down on ‘non-gaming’ broadcasts by PlayStation 4 owners

Faced with an influx of living-room livestreamers and the risqué content that follows, Twitch has begun a crackdown on PlayStation 4 streams. The company has taken to its Twitter account to remind users that broadcasting via the console’s Playroom feature, which uses Sony’s PlayStation Eye camera to stream to Twitch and uStream, must have a gaming focus or risk having their account suspended. Most users, including the husband and wife team behind The Spartan Show, have kept within Twitch’s terms of service, but others have decided the console provides the perfect platform to broadcast sexual content and host non-gaming shows. While Sony already offers the broadcasting service, Xbox One owners will have to wait until “early 2014” to stream their games — either way, Twitch will have quite the job on its hands as gamers test the limits of their new all-seeing consoles.

PS4 Sold Out At Best Buy

PS4 Sold Out At Best Buy

Gaming console news has been constantly pouring in this month, because both Sony and Microsoft launched their new consoles over the past few weeks. Sony was the first to come out with its PlayStation 4 on November 15th. After launch day, the company announced that it had sold over one million units on launch day alone, an impressive feat considering the fact that PS4 was only launched in U.S. and Canada on the aforementioned date. The console seems to be doing well even after the initial rush, as Best Buy CEO Hubert Joly tells Reuters that the retailer has “pretty much run out” of PS4 stock.

As Sony gears up to launch the console in Europe and additional markets, it continues to see strong consumer demand in North America. This week Microsoft finally released its Xbox One console, and it too announced after launch day that it had sold over 1 million units under 24 hours, however the Xbox One was initially launched in 13 markets. Nevertheless, customers anxious to purchase the Sony PlayStation 4 from Best Buy need not worry. CEO Joly confirmed to Reuters that the retailer is going to receive new inventory next week, so that the console is very much in stock as customers flock to purchase the latest in gaming technology.

One Million Xbox One Units Sold In Under 24 Hours

One Million Xbox One Units Sold In Under 24 Hours

November has been a great month for gamers, primarily because of the fact that both Sony and Microsoft released their next generation consoles. Sony released the PlayStation 4 on November 15th and sold one million units on launch day. Microsoft released the Xbox One on November 22nd and matched Sony’s milestone. The company has announced that Xbox One was the biggest launch in Xbox history with one million units being sold, this figure surpasses Xbox 360 sales on day one and also sets a new record for Microsoft.

Most retailers are now sold out of Xbox One stock, so if you weren’t lucky enough to get your pre-order in for a Day One edition or if you weren’t able to pick it up at a retailer, fret not. Microsoft says that it is working “as fast as possible” to get additional stock to retailers so that demand can be met. Xbox One launch titles racked up some impressive gameplay on launch day as well, with over 60 million zombies being killed in Dead Rising 3, 3.6 million miles being driven in Forza Motorsport 5 and 8.5 million enemies being defeated in Ryse: Son of Rome apart from the 7.1 million combos that gamers executed in Killer Instinct. These certainly are impressive stats, despite the fact that a number of customers have complained about Xbox One Blu-ray drive failing. Microsoft has taken notice of the reports and encourages customers to reach out if they experience a similar problem with their latest Xbox console.

Is Sony prepping a PlayStation 4 and PS Vita bundle for the UK?

It’s the hardware marriage we all assumed (and hoped) would eventually happen. A report over on gaming site MCV claims Sony is planning to offer an ‘Ultimate Edition’ PlayStation 4 bundle that would include its portable console, the PS Vita, as a pack-in for the UK. Further corroborating this rumor is an alleged image of the bundle (pictured above) said to be featured in MCV‘s upcoming print edition. If this turns out to be true, Brits could very well see the next-gen PlayStation combo hit retail in time for the holidays, although there’s no word on how much it’ll cost. Aside from being a match made in gamer heaven, the purported move is somewhat of a no-brainer for Sony, given the PS4’s much touted Remote Play functionality (which streams next-gen games to the handheld) and the Vita’s less-than-stellar install base. With about a month to go before holiday mania sets in, we should know sooner rather than later just how real this bundle fantasy is and whether it’s also destined for US shores.

PlayStation 4 or Xbox One: Which game console to buy this holiday

Today is the day: Xbox One is available in at least 13 territories. The PlayStation 4 launched last Friday to massive sales. The next-gen is officially on, having kicked off last year with Nintendo’s Wii U. Don’t believe us? We even reviewed all three!

Of course, Nintendo’s not playing the same game that Microsoft and Sony are. The latter two are pushing serious horsepower and attempting to woo gamers with the promise of very pretty games and gameplay streaming, while Nintendo’s pursing a second-screen input approach. As such, it’s Microsoft’s and Sony’s new consoles that we’re here to examine today — the two big console makers that are taking each other on directly in the decades-long battle for the living room.

PS4, PS Vita ‘Ultimate Bundle’ Coming In Time For The Holidays [Report]

PS4, PS Vita Ultimate Bundle Coming In Time For The Holidays [Report]

Own a PlayStation Vita and a PlayStation 4? Then you’ll know just how awesome the PlayStation Vita’s remote play app works, allowing you to essentially take your console with you on the go as you can access it remotely. Unfortunately, Sony hasn’t announced a bundle that will offer both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita, although they’ve admitted they’re reconsidering this idea. It looks like that reconsidering may have done Sony some good as MCV is reporting the company will release an “Ultimate Bundle” that includes both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita this holiday season. Sony Claims Many Factors That Could Have Caused PS4′s Blue Light Of Death

Sony Claims Many Factors That Could Have Caused PS4s Blue Light Of DeathIt seems that Sony might have discovered what are the issue (or issues) that caused the mysterious “blue light of death” that seemed to plague some of their customers. According to Sony spokesperson, Satoshi Nakajima, he told Bloomberg that “there have been several issues reported, which leads us to believe there isn’t a singular problem that could impact a broader percentage of PS4 units.” Nakajima also states that there is a chance that some units could have been damaged during shipping, which might have caused some of the issues gamers are experiencing. “We also understand that some units were reportedly damaged during shipping.”

Reports of bricking started even before the PS4 had been released. While it sounds like a lot of PS4 units might have been affected, based on the coverage of the issue, that isn’t the case, at least according to Sony. The company claims less than 1% of PS4 units are facing these issues but stated that they would investigate the matter. In the meantime Sony is offering their customers expedited shipping for replacement units if they have received a bricked one, which is a change of tune from earlier when it was suggested that replacement units might not be available for months.

Husband and wife become unlikely Twitch stars using just their PS4

Members of the PC gaming elite and console players with add-on hardware have been live streaming their gaming exploits for years, but a new generation of consoles means everyone’s 15 minutes of fame one step closer. While many gamers are unpacking new Xbox Ones tonight, one couple has used a PS4, Sony’s Playroom demo, the PS4 Eye camera add-on and Twitch to broadcast a studio-style show. Regis Michael Strahan and Kelly they’re not (for better or worse), but the show is a hit for now, with Sony exec Adam Boyes joining as a call-in guest after its link was RT’d by the official @PlayStation account. You can check out the live stream of The Spartan Show embedded after the break and marvel at how a single game console and the desire to share a DualShock 4 mod has lead to over 1,000 viewers (and growing). We’ll see if the teased PS3 raffle comes to fruition, but ambitious gamers may want to polish their studio patter and set building skills before taking on Kimmel, Letterman, Leno and the rest.

How the internet ruined game consoles

The time it took for my brother to get our new Super Nintendo out of the box and connected to our television couldn’t have been more than five minutes. I’m pretty sure we used the same coaxial cable connector that the NES before it used, though it’s possible he was bold enough to forge a new connection dedicated to the SNES. The time between when he arrived home with the console box and a copy of Super Mario World, and when we saw Mario’s astonishing level of detail, was extremely short. Open game console box, plug in game console, insert game, play game — pretty simple. I’ll never forget the yellow on Mario’s cape!

Today’s kids don’t have it so easy. The anticipation while waiting for holidays or birthdays or while saving enough allowance has turned into anticipation during firmware updates or software patches or mandatory installs, and all manner of nonsense. Even for those of us who grew up with PCs, the state of modern game consoles is a sad one when it comes to what’s inside the packaging representing what the outside says.

This is all the internet’s fault, as most things are. I’m joking! Partially, anyway. It’s really internet ubiquity that’s to blame for game publishers and console makers leaning on day one updates. With most buyers living in places with relatively strong connectivity, games can launch without, say, multiplayer, and consoles can launch without the ability to even play games. It might sound nuts, but it’s the story of the now-current generation of game consoles.
