Sony’s not showing its new PlayStation 4 just yet, but here’s a taste (video)
Posted in: Today's ChiliWhat does the PlayStation 4 look like? We didn’t find out back at Sony’s big New York City reveal gala in February, but it looks like we’re edging ever closer to that moment: June 10th at 6PM PT seems to be exactly when we’ll find out. Hey, wouldn’t you know it, that lines up with Sony’s E3 2013 press conference, which we’ll be liveblogging right here on Engadget. The coincidences simply won’t stop! A new tease video today gives us a few glimpses at what we might see in a few weeks, but for now you’ll have to be sated by looking through individual video frames. Take a look (and then another, and then another) just below the break.
The PlayStation 4 has a projected launch of “Holiday 2013,” and is Sony’s next entry in its long-running PlayStation line of game consoles. The company’s already shown off its new DualShock 4 controller, as well as its PlayStation 4 Eye motion camera (akin to Microsoft’s Kinect), and we expect to see not just the console, but a smattering of other PlayStation-related news at the June 10th press conference. Today’s tease comes just one day before Microsoft’s expected next-gen Xbox reveal event kicks off in Redmond. Oh you guys!
Update: Intrepid commenter GoldenRabbit snatched all the stills from the tease and put them all in one place, right here. Thanks dude!
Update 2: And gaming forum NeoGAF goes even deeper in this thread. We’re pretty sure it’s a game console. Or a fancy scale. Or maybe a panini press?

Fresh track footage of Gran Turismo 6 has emerged, showing some of the more than 1,200 cars gamers will get to choose between, and hinting at the sort of graphics PlayStation 3 users could look forward to. The new video, which also includes some of the new tracks, shows more than three minutes of concept footage ahead of the hotly-anticipated racing title.
GT6 was given the official nod earlier this month, the most ambitious of the Gran Turismo series so far. The game will include 33 different locations, seven of which are new; there will be 71 different layouts to choose between, of which 19 are new.
On top of that, racers will be able to modify and customize their favorite cars using in-game accessories and upgrades. Sony hasn’t given specifics, but there are said to be “thousands” of possible add-ons to choose between.
The new cars will include Alfa Romeo’s TZ3 Stradale ’11, the classic 1971 Ferrari Dino 246 GT, the pared-back KTM X-BOW R ’12, and Mercedes’ SLS AMG GT3 from 2011. Geek-favorite Tesla will also feature, with the new Model S Signature Performance (though not the Performance Plus version) also making its debut.
As for how those cars will drive – virtually speaking – Sony is particularly excited about its new suspension and kinematics model. There’s also a new tire model – in partnership with Yokohama Rubber and KW Automotive – to make the handling more realistic, and a fresh aerodynamics model.
Gran Turismo 6 will launch on the PlayStation 3 initially, in time for the 2013 holiday season, but Sony has already dropped some significant hints about a PlayStation 4 version.
Thanks Zak!

During Sony’s PS4 reveal earlier this year, the company basically shared some of the features we might expect from the console, namely social-type features, along with some games that gamers can look forward to. Obviously that isn’t all the PS4 […]

Gran Turismo 6 coming to PS3 in time for the holidays, creator has PS4 version ‘in mind’ (video)
Posted in: Today's ChiliGran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi has announced that the series’ next racing title will arrive later this year, with a demo scheduled to appear this July, ahead of a holiday launch. Expect a heady 1,200 cars to make the new edition, with 33 locations (and 71 layouts) to drive them around. Polyphony Digital has developed a new game engine for Gran Turismo 6, one that “pushes the limits of the PS3,” but the incoming game might make another appearance on the incoming PlayStation 4. At a 15th anniversary event at the Silverstone racetrack in the UK, Yamauchi teased to IGN that they had a PS4 version “in mind, but for this holiday season, we thought it would be best for users to release on [the] PS3.” Gran Turismo remains Sony’s most successful franchise ever and has sold over 70 million copies to date. Sony adds that we’ll hear even more about the sequel at E3 — likely alongside a next-generation console we can see.

Jaws dropped during Sony’s demonstration of Killzone Shadow Fall for the PlayStation 4 back in February, and now new information from developers Guerrilla Games gives some technical insight on how the next-gen console runs, what coding for it is like, and just what sort of step up from the PS3 is on offer. The tech demo – which you can see after the cut – shows how the new Killzone title was running on Sony’s demo hardware, while a “postmortem” of the event by Guerrilla Games runs down the improvements of the incoming hardware.
Much of the summary is dedicated to how much more straightforward it is to develop titles for the PS4. The console uses the same concurrency model as the PS3, for instance, with a main “orchestrator” thread and then the rest of the code running in jobs across all the cores; on the PS4, though, Guerrilla found that 80-percent of all code could now be run in jobs, versus 20-percent on the current-gen console.
To show how well the game ran, the developers had to cook up their own CPU and GPU profilers, since the official tools still aren’t quite ready. On-screen, there’s a physically-correct lighting model and volumetrics supported on every light, along with real-time reflections. Some of the most obvious improvements are in characters, with far greater detail allowed.
Killzone Shadow Fall PS4 tech demo:
“Our aim for [the] announcement event was to run on PS4 hardware” Guerrilla writes, meaning “1080p, solid 30FPS, [and] no cheats.” The latter is presumably a reference to the Killzone 2 for PS3 demo gaffe, where what was later revealed to be rendered game footage was initially portrayed as running on the console itself.
Killzone Shadow Fall PS4 gameplay demo:
“PS4 is really easy to program for!” lead tech Michal Valient concludes, and the “GPU is really fast” while “GDDR5 bandwith is awesome” assuming you handle the memory mapping properly. “We’ve only scratched the surface” he says.
Sony didn’t show off the final hardware at its PS4 launch event, only the peripherals and some game demos. It did, however, confirm the core specifications: 8GB of GDDR5 RAM, an x86 CPU, an enhanced PC GPU, and a hard-drive; there’s also WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth, USB 3.0, gigabit ethernet, and a Blu-ray drive.
Thanks Zak!
