Samsung Reportedly Wants To Perform Better In Application Processor Market

Samsung may be one of the biggest mobile device vendors in the world, and it may also be one of its largest mobile chip manufacturers, but despite that the company’s share in the application processor market has taken in a hit in recent quarters. Products in its Exynos lineup haven’t performed too spectacularly, in part due to the challenge mounted by Qualcomm, but the company is now reportedly pulling up its socks and getting back in the game.

Limited Edition Toq Smartwatch Launches In White

qualcommBack in 2013, Qualcomm announced their Toq smartwatch. The watch was never intended to be released as a commercial product, but rather produced a reference design in which Qualcomm expected other companies to use in order to manufacturer smartwatches of their own. However it seems that interest in the device proved to be pretty high which led to Qualcomm selling the device themselves. Now the good news for those who might be a bit more fashion conscious is that if you thought black was rather boring, you might be pleased to learn that Qualcomm has announced that they will be offering a white color version of the Toq smartwatch which customers can go ahead and purchase via their website.

Apart from the new coat of paint, the internals of the Toq smartwatch remain the same as its black counterpart, although we should note that according to Qualcomm’s website, the white version of the Toq smartwatch is a limited edition model, so you might want to hurry if you don’t want to miss out on it! The Toq smartwatch is priced at $349.99 and will feature a 1.55-ich Mirasol display, Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity, Android smartphone compatibility as long as the device runs on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean or higher, and a 240mAh battery which Qualcomm boasts will last a few days before requiring a charge.

Qualcomm Buys Palm and IPAQ Patents

qualcomm-toq-smartwatch-01Qualcomm has just announced that it is buying the Palm and IPAQ portfolios of patents from HP which represent a combined 2400 patents, some of which have been granted, while others are still in the application process. Qualcomm Will Bring Lytro-Style Focus Selection To Mobile Photos With New Snapdragon Chips

    qualcomm-sign

Qualcomm showed off some of the magic powers of its latest mobile processors at CES this year, and many of the new features on display had to do with mobile cameras. The Qualcomm 805, announced back in November, will offer smartphone shooters some powerful new tools once it starts making its way into shipping phones later this year.

The most impressive new feature is the ability to select focus after a picture is captured. You can either put everything into sharp focus for incredible depth of field, or choose one point and throw the rest into attractive, soft focus for pleasing bokeh. You may recognize this tech; it’s similar to how the Lytro light field camera works.

The Lytro captures its images differently, however, which accounts for its elongated design. Qualcomm has managed to do all the heavy lifting by capturing multiple exposures in rapid succession, using existing camera hardware. That means it’ll be simple to build it into upcoming smartphones.

Besides focus selection, Qualcomm’s chip can also power intelligent lighting and exposure correction, as well as help with making sure that flash photos don’t appear too washed out or unnatural looking. All-in-all, Qualcomm is doing a great job bringing to market tech that seemed to be many years out only just recently, and it’ll be great to see how OEMs employ this tech in their products in 2014.
