First Snapdragon 805 Device To Release In May

First Snapdragon 805 Device To Release In May

Qualcomm held the high-end mobile device segment tightly in the past year, with majority of the premium devices touting its Snapdragon 600 and Snapdragon 800 processors. Late last year it unveiled the Snapdragon 805 chip but it hasn’t made its way into any device as yet. The release is scheduled for the first half of 2014, but it is not known for sure right now which device will be the first to tout this new chip, and when exactly it’s going to be released. A Japanese website claims that Qualcomm revealed off the record at CES this week that the first Snapdragon 805 device is going to be released in May.

Unfortunately there’s no mention of a manufacturer and the device in question, so for all we know, it could be a smartphone or tablet developed by any OEM. Whatever it ends up being, the Snapdragon 805 will surely pack a mean punch as compared to the existing Qualcomm MSM8974AB processor. The Snapdragon 805 touts four Krait 450 cores that can be clocked up to 2.5GHz.The Adreno 420 graphics processor will aid in streaming, decoding and encoding in 4K. Apart from a handful of other enhancements, the processor will also bring image processing improvements to the smartphones and tablets that run on it. Could the first device be the Samsung Galaxy S5?

Qualcomm Toq Smartwatch Price Receives $50 Cut

We saw a number of smartwatches being released last year and the trend is expected to continue this year as well. Qualcomm, commonly known for the mobile chips that it makes, also released its very own smartwatch called the Toq. At $350 a pop, the Toq might not be everyone’s cup of tea. If you have been waiting to purchase this smartwatch then you’re in luck this week. In honor of the International Consumer Electronics Show 2014 that’s well underway in Las Vegas right now, the company has slashed $50 off the Toq’s price.

That’s right, you can now purchase a Qualcomm Toq smartwatch for $300. The deal runs through January 11. Toq touts Qualcomm’s Mirasol display, which gives it a leg up on its competitors. Apart from that, its pretty similar to all of the other smartwatches that we saw last year. Qualcomm isn’t expected to unveil a new wearable device at CES 2014, but there have been rumors that a lot of its competitors will be showcasing their latest smartwatches, which will definitely be making the headlines. Perhaps its an effort to hog some of the limelight, but it does bring a $50 discount for you, so head on down to Qualcomm’s website and pick up a Toq if you so desire.

    Qualcomm Ultra Sound NotePad Featured

[CES 2014] A stylus goes down pretty well with your smartphone or tablet, even more so if you are one who cannot bear the sight of fingerprints on your mobile device. Not only that, a stylus works a whole lot more accurately compared to your finger during those tense moments when you need to get the exact pixel touched or selected. Qualcomm, more famous for their mobile chips than anything else, has taken the plunge into a different world – by churning out a stylus which is able to play nice with a smartphone or tablet sans wires, using sound alone.

It sounds (pardon the pun) like magic, but in reality, it is actually plain old technology being put to good use. Known as the Qualcomm Ultra Sound NotePad, the demonstration video that you view above will depict just how a device with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor as well as a set of special microphones are able to “listen” for vibrations which are made by a pen. Best of all is, this pen does not even need to touch the screen, but rather, to be near it. I admit, it will feel pretty weird at first since we are all infinitely more familiar with grasping a stylus as it dances across a touchscreen, but barriers are always meant to be broken. In a nutshell, you can now write notes, draw pictures, or doodle on a sheet of paper that is located next to your tablet, only to see it replicated digitally. This is still a proof-of-concept, and it might never make it to the real world. Only time will tell.

Qualcomm Ultra Sound Tech Copies Writing or Drawing in Real Time: Protocopier

A few months ago we featured iSketchnote, an iPad cover that can record and digitize handwritten or handdrawn notes. If chipmaker Qualcomm has its way, that feature may be integrated into the next wave of tablets. To show off the power of its upcoming Snapdragon 805 processor, Qualcomm will be displaying what it calls Ultra Sound at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

    qualcomm ultra sound technology 620x346magnify

Like iSketchnote, Ultra Sound copies doodles made with ink and paper in real time. The prototype shown in the video below requires a digital pen that’s also an ink pen. When you use the digital pen on paper, it emits ultrasonic vibrations. Those vibrations are picked up by microphones embedded in the Snapdragon 805-powered tablet and then analyzed to replicate the paper sketch on the tablet’s screen.

It would be nice if Ultra Sound worked even if the tablet was in sleep mode, so you can keep writing or doodling for long periods of time knowing that your work is being backed up in real time.
