Qualcomm Toq Smartwatch Now Available For Purchase

Qualcomm Toq Smartwatch Now Available For PurchaseA couple of weeks ago, we reported that the Qualcomm Toq smartwatch had gone up for pre-order. The good news is that if you missed out on the opportunity to pre-order the device, you’re in luck because it can now be purchased directly via Qualcomm’s website where it is priced at $350. There are two models available, one in black and one in white, but as it stands the white model is said to be “coming soon”, so for now customers will only be able to get their hands on the black model. The device, according to Qualcomm’s website, is expected to begin shipping in 1-2 weeks, so it looks like customers will be in for a wait, but we reckon it should arrive in time for Christmas if you order now.

In terms of specs, Qualcomm’s Toq will sport a 1.55” Mirasol display with Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity. It will play nicely with a variety of Android devices, although Qualcomm does recommend devices running Jelly Beam or later. It will also pack a 240mAh battery which apparently should go for days with a single charge. The Qualcomm Toq was originally designed to be a reference design to manufacturers, although it does cost $50 more than the Galaxy Gear from Samsung, but we will have to wait and see what the reviews say about the device to determine if the $50 difference is justified.

Qualcomm, Nvidia And Broadcom To Produce 64-Bit Quadcore Processors Next Year [Report]

Qualcomm, Nvidia And Broadcom To Produce 64 Bit Quadcore Processors Next Year [Report]

Ever since Apple introduced its 64-bit processor earlier this year with the iPhone 5s, there has been a lot of speculation about other manufacturers and their 64-bit plans. Samsung is reportedly going to start production of its 64-bit Exynos 6 processor early next year and according to industry observers cited in a new Digitimes report, Qualcomm, Nvidia and Broadcom are likely to roll out their 64-bit quadcore processors in the first half of 2014. Sources suggest that it is likely the chips might debut as early as CES 2014.

Despite the fact that manufacturers like MediaTek have been extensively focusing on octacore chips, the report suggests that Qualcomm, Nvidia and Broadcom aren’t likely to focus on 8 core chips in the near future. Since MediaTek has been focusing on 8 core chips, it is expected to launch its 64-bit processors in the second half of 2014. The three manufacturers have reportedly revamped their product roadmaps for 2014 as they expect rise in demand from smartphone vendors for 64-bit chips as they look to match the hardware specifications of Apple’s latest and greatest iPhone. None of the manufacturers have officially commented on their product roadmaps for 2014, it is likely that we’ll hear from them on this subject at or around CES 2014.

Qualcomm’s Mirasol smartwatch display debuts in Appscomm Fashioncomm A1

If you walk through a Chinese electronics market, you’ll find countless wearables, including a variety of smartwatches. Why, then, is this China-exclusive a significant introduction? Well, the Appscomm Fashioncomm A1 is the first smartwatch to include the Mirasol display we first saw in Qualcomm’s Toq prototype, which means that 1.55-inch MEMS panel is actually coming to market. The A1 delivers much of the functionality we experienced with the device in our September hands-on, with an added GSM chipset, enabling you to make and receive calls directly from your wrist.

It’s not the first watchphone we’ve seen — and past iterations can hardly be deemed a success — but as the first such device to integrate Qualcomm’s new Mirasol panel, it’s at least worth a casual mention. With the A1, Appscomm is also bundling an integrated camera, letting you snap stills and video clips a la Samsung’s Galaxy Gear. There’s also Bluetooth connectivity, along with a 450mAh battery that’s rated for up to 190 hours of standby time. Smartwatch enthusiasts based in China can pre-order the device for RMB 1,299 ($213) beginning today.

Qualcomm Toq Smartwatch Now Up For Pre-Order

Qualcomm Toq Smartwatch Now Up For Pre OrderThe other day we reported that Qualcomm was planning on releasing its Toq smartwatch on the 2nd of December where it would be priced at $350. At that time there was no word when you could pre-order the device, but the good news is that if the Toq smartwatch caught your attention, you will be pleased to learn that the smartwatch can now be pre-ordered via Qualcomm’s website.

The Toq was designed by Qualcomm as a reference design which will feature a 1.55” Mirasol display with Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity and will play nicely with Android devices that run Android 4.0.3 or later, although Qualcomm does recommend Jelly Bean or later for better performance. It also comes with a 240mAh battery which will apparently last for days without charging.

Smartwatches are definitely the “in” thing these days as we have seen recent efforts from the likes of Samsung with the Galaxy Gear and ZTE with their own smartwatch, and we have also heard rumors of how Google and Apple plan on entering the smartwatch market as well. So, which company’s smartwatch are you most looking forward to?

Qualcomm, Cisco execs cite spy suspicion for shaken China tech trade

We’ve been covering the NSA and other spy agencies pretty faithfully here at SlashGear, and while all that cloak-and-dagger, hack-and-spy, Big-Brother-Is-Watching-You drama can be provocative, that’s not why we cover it. We cover it because it affects the tech industry and, by extension, the gadgets we obsess over. The reverberations of mass data surveillance by […]

Qualcomm unveils Snapdragon 805 processor with ‘Ultra HD’ mobile video

Qualcomm outs Snapdragon 800 and 600 up to 23GHz quadcore, 4K video, due by mid 2013

If you’re still enjoying that fresh Snapdragon 800 CPU, guess what? Qualcomm’s just trumped it with a new model: the Snapdragon 805 ‘Ultra HD’ quad-core processor. The most headline-grabbing feature is UltraHD video playback on your tablet, smartphone or Smart TV — so you can finally watch that 4K video you recorded. To do that, it’s packing the latest Adreno 420 GPU, which Qualcomm claims has as much as 40 percent more graphics horsepower than previous models. On top of that, the Krait 450 CPU’s four cores will each run at up to 2.5GHz and communicate with memory at 25.6 GB/second max, to make all apps run faster.

The new processor will also come with the 28nm Gobi MDM9x25 modem announced earlier this year, in order to support LTE carrier aggregation (and the resulting higher speeds) and 150Mbps LTE 4. Another option will be a new LTE modem, the 20nm Gobi MDM9x35, which pairs with the WTR3925 chip to bring up to 300Mbps download speeds via LTE advanced. Qualcomm said that both chips support “all carrier aggregation band combinations approved by 3GPP” while enabling manufacturers to bring LTE devices to market faster. Finally, there’s a new mobile camera processor that supports gigapixel throughput and gyro-based image stabilization, for smoother video recording and faster image processing. All of that will come in a package that consumes less power, according to Qualcomm, who added that owning a Snapdragon 805-equipped device will be like “having an UltraHD theater in your pocket.” Don’t sell that Galaxy Note 3 just yet, though — Qualcomm said manufacturer sampling won’t start until next year, meaning actual devices are still a ways off.
