Range Rover Hybrid and Sport Hybrid SUV models unveiled

Land Rover has introduced its first hybrid models, the Range Rover Hybrid and Range Rover Sport Hybrid. Both models will offer higher fuel efficiency and less CO2 emissions than its non-hybrid vehicles while keeping in line with the auto maker’s performance record. Those interested will be able to make a purchase next month, with deliveries […]

Range Rover Hybrids due late-2013 (but the US misses out)

Range Rover‘s hybrid versions of its two big SUVs will make their public debut in September, though neither of the diesel-hybrid cars will be headed to US forecourts. Range Rover expects to show off the duo – the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport – in hybrid form at the Frankfurt Motor Show, chief programme engineer for RRS Stuart Frith told Car Sales Australia, with sales kicking off in Europe by the end of the year.

The hybrid will also be joined by a new V8 diesel, returning an SDV8 to the Range Rover Sport line-up. Meanwhile, a four-cylinder version is also teased, with 420kg of shed curb weight meaning that performance is still as perky as drivers would expect.

It’s the hybrid that is arguably the most interesting, however, building on Range Rover’s experimentation with the Range_e concept revealed back in early 2011. That car paired a 69kW electric motor and 14.2kWh lithium-ion battery with a 245PS 3.0-liter TDV6 diesel powerplant, and could be driven for 20 miles on battery power alone.

When the diesel lump kicked in, meanwhile, the Range_e was good for 89g/km CO2 with a fuel efficiency rating of 85mpg (Euro), while the battery could be topped up using a regular 240V outlet.

For the production RR/RRS Hybrid, the car company is aiming for 169g/km of CO2 with a diesel V6 engine. The batteries and the rest of the power system will be hidden under the floor, meaning internal space and luggage capacity will be unchanged, and is expected to feed power through a motor/generator that’s positioned in-between the regular engine and the 8-speed transmission.

However, the US won’t be getting either of those models, since Range Rover’s North American line-up is light on diesels. Instead, there are expected to be unspecified gas-electric hybrids taking similar approaches, though Range Rover is yet to confirm when they can be expected to go on sale.

James Bond test drives the new 2014 Range Rover Sport

In order to show off what a beast its new line-up of Range Rovers is, Land Rover enlisted the help of Agent 007 himself in order to show off its beauty and its power. James Bond, or Daniel Craig, drove the 2014 Range Rover Sport all the way from a Brooklyn Shipping Yard to the stage of the James A. Farley Post Office at the 2013 New York Auto Show. The entire drive was streamed live to all the eager James Bond fans on the internet.

James Bond navigated around all the shipping crates in the Brooklyn Shipping Yard with ease. He navigated through the crazy New York traffic, road over obstacles, drove through a flooded tunnel, made his way dramatically across a thick cloud of smoke, and brought the 2014 Range Rover Sport safely onto the stage at the James A. Farley Post Office. There he was greeted by an onslaught of paparazzi and reporters eager to take his photo.

Unfortunately, all James Bond did after arriving was pose for a few photos before taking off. The entire spectacle was said to be one of the most over-the-top product reveals done at any auto show in quite some time. There was definitely more attention to the James Bond aspect of the presentation than there was for the actual car, but whatever the case, the Range Rover got great publicity from the event.

The 2014 Range Rover is a full-on luxury vehicle that comes with great features and sports options. There will be 4 different versions of the vehicle, ranging from the $63,495 Range Rover Sport SE to the $93,295 Range Rover Sport Autobiography. The Range Rover Sport can get from 0 to 60 in just 5.3 seconds. Ironically, even though New York doesn’t seem to be the place to show off the Range Rover’s full capabilities, it’s actually the biggest market for the Range Rover in the entire world.

The Range Rover Sport is the best selling Range Rover for the company, so it would make sense that Land Rover would pull out all the stops in order to get it as much publicity as it can. The 2014 Range Rover Sport features a whole bunch of great customizations that you can choose from to make the vehicle more personalized. You can read more about the 2014 Range Rover in this post here. Stay tuned to SlashGear for more news on the 2013 New York Auto Show.

The 2014 Range Rover Sport will be available in four different models: the Sport SE, Sport HSE, Sport Supercharged, and the Sport Autobiography. Customers will be able to choose from 11 interior color themes (plus a seat color), three real wood veneers, 4 aluminum interior finishes, 19 exterior paint options, wheel size from 19-inches to 22-inches, 3 roof colors (Santorini Black, Indus Silver, and Corris Grey), 3 exterior accent finishes (Gloss Black, Dark Atlas, and Atlas Silver), as well as illuminated side sills.

As you can imagine, the 2014 Range Rover boasts a variety of safety features, all the following of which are available across all the models: Roll Stability Control, Dynamic Stability Control, Electronic Traction Control, Trailer Stability Assist, Hill Start Assist, Hill Descent Control, Gradient Release Control, Engine Drag Troque Control, Antilock Braking System, Emergency Brake Lights, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Corner Brake Control, Emergency Brake Assist, and Electronic Park Brake.

Moving on to technology, there’s a host of connectivity options, including a hands-free Bluetooth option that can be controlled via steering wheel controls and an 8-inch touchscreen display, Bluetooth audio streaming for playing audio files over the sound system, voice control, and USB ports for use with audio devices/smartphones/flash drives. This accompanies the Meridian audio system, of which three options are available. The highest audio package is a 1700 watt system with 23 speakers and a subwoofer.

The audio will be extra enjoyable thanks to the low-noise design of the 2014 Range Rover Sport, which was specifically engineered to reduce road noises. While passengers will hear a “sporting engine note” under hard acceleration, there’s little noise at regular cruising speeds. Enhanced seats, a rear entertainment system, configurable mood lighting, keyless entry, a center console cooler, and a heated steering wheel/seats/windshield round out the biggest luxury and interior features.

The 2014 model is being hailed as the “fastest, most agile and responsive” of all Land Rovers, offering a new high-strength aluminum stucture that shaves 800 pounds off over the 2013 Sport model. Unlike the previous model, the 2014 offers a 5+2 third row option, intelligent start and stop technology for less emissions and better gas mileage, and two transfer case options: the single-speed Torsen and the two-speed locking low range option.

Pricing:

Range Rover Sport SE: $63,495 3-Liter Supercharged V6 340hp
Range Rover Sport HSE: $68,495 3-Liter Supercharged V6 340hp

New Range Rover Sport teased ahead of NYC debut

There’s no denying Range Rover has been on something of a roll the past couple of years: the Evoque in 2011, the new Range Rover in 2012, and now 2013′s Range Rover Sport. Finishing the luxury/off-road trio, the new model slots in-between the Range Rover and Evoque, and will make its official debut on March 26 at an event in New York. Still, that doesn’t mean Range Rover can’t get in on the teaser action in the meantime.

The video doesn’t give us much to go on, but the headlamps borrow some of the more angular styling of the full-sized RR. Of course the roofline has a more aggressive slope than its big sibling, though the “floating roof” on top of black pillars remains.

According to Land Rover, there’s a good reason why it’s showing the Range Rover Sport in NYC. More of the existing Sport are sold in Manhattan than in any other metropolitan area, it’s claimed, and it’s North America’s most popular model from the company’s whole line-up.

If it’s to see the same successes with the new model, it will need to walk the narrow line between the luxury of the RR and the accessible sportiness of the Evoque, the latter of which has arguably tread on the Range Rover Sport’s metaphorical toes in recent months. We’ll have to wait until 19:30 EDT on March 26 to see if Land Rover has achieved that.

Range Rover announces new Black Design Pack for Evoque

Range Rover has been offering its attractive smaller SUV called the Evoque for a while now. The vehicle is available in Europe as a coupe and a five-door model with a wide range of customer options. The standard vehicle comes in three different design themes including Pure, Prestige, and Dynamic allowing users to choose a vehicle that suits their lifestyle.

At the Geneva Motor Show, Range Rover has announced a new personalization option called the Black Design Pack. This design pack aims to make the already attractive Evoque even more stylish and assertive with a host of black exterior details. The package includes things like black 20-inch nine-spoke forged wheels that haven’t been offered as an option in the past.

The design pack also removes any bright finished objects on the exterior of the vehicle. The exhaust finishers on the back of the vehicle were also painted in black and complemented by a gloss black rear bumper and inner and outer sump guard. The Black Design Pack also darkens the front headlights and fog lamps.

In the back, the taillights have been modified with a clear effect so they don’t appear permanently red. The Range Rover lettering across the front of the hood and the tailgate as well as the rear spoiler are also done in black. This Black Design Pack was first seen earlier this year on the Special Edition model, which is available in two special colors including Sicilian yellow with black contrasting roof or black with a Sicilian yellow roof. The Black Design Pack will be available on the Dynamic class Evoque starting in April.
