Redbox May Offer PS4, Xbox One And Wii U Rentals Soon

This won’t be the first time that Redbox will offer video game rentals. The company has done this before, but if a recent report is correct, it may be the first time that Redbox offers titles from next generation gaming consoles. The rental company is expected to offer titles for Sony PlayStation 4, Microsoft Xbox One and the Nintendo Wii U over the next couple of weeks.

Redbox Instant Playlist Theme On PS4 Undergoes Vote

Redbox Instant Playlist Theme On PS4 Undergoes VoteRedbox noticed that the PlayStation community proved to be one of the most engaged groups of movie fans that they have come across ever since the Redbox Instant by Verizon app was launched on both the PS3 and the PS4 sometime in late 2013. The company is all heart, and in gratitude and appreciation to the supportive PlayStation community, they hope to ensure that viewers would always receive the best possible experience with their service, in addition to knowing just what kind of movies which you would like to stream most on your PS3 or PS4. In fact, the next update to Redbox Instant by Verizon’s The Playlist collection will arrive next Tuesday, February 25, which should be a day after the Galaxy S5 from Samsung is announced at MWC 2014. But I digress – Redbox wants its viewers to be the main force behind the decision on the kind of movies that will be featured.

Redbox Instant On iPhone Now Supports AirPlay Streaming

Redbox Instant On iPhone Now Supports AirPlay StreamingRedbox Instant was launched by Redbox earlier this year with Verizon, where it is being touted to be a competitor to another video streaming solution from Netflix. Well, what is the whole point of having a particular piece of software or app if it were not to receive updates along the way to be better and more efficient? Good to know that Redbox has already introduced a new update for the iPhone app, where this time around, one will be able to enjoy AirPlay streaming support. Of course, there will still be limitations, as AirPlay would play nice only for video streaming, but it will be unable to support anything that has already been downloaded.

This would be a blow to those who want to see Redbox as an alternative for its on-demand and subscription libraries. Another area of concern would be, the app itself would stop running in the event where there are incoming texts and notifications, or should one happen to run a different app apart from Redbox. According to Redbox Instant, this latest update will also be able to handle unnamed bugs, all the while improving the recommendations engine so that it can be a whole lot more accurate concerning the kinds of movies which will be suggested to members.

Verizon’s Redbox Instant now supports AirPlay streaming

Verizon’s subscription streaming TV service, Redbox Instant, now supports Apple’s AirPlay thanks to a new version 1.4 iOS app update — with some caveats. For starters, though you’ll be able to play streaming content on your iOS 6 device, the app doesn’t support downloaded material as yet. Also, your viewing may be broken off if you receive texts and certain notifications, if you lock the device or if you quit Redbox to use another app. Meanwhile, AirPlay Mirroring, which lets you play from your device with your TV as a second screen, will still work just fine. Other tweaks include the usual bug fixes and improvements to the recommendations engine. So, if you’ve got Apple TV and want to give it a whirl, hit the source — just make sure to tell your pals not to contact you mid-film.

Redbox Instant hits Windows Phone, will remain Lumia-exclusive for 60 days

After launching on iOS and Android almost a year ago, the mobile version of Redbox Instant by Verizon has finally arrived in the Windows Phone Store. Aside from a few cosmetic changes and added Live Tile support, the new app works exactly like its cross-platform counterparts, offering movie streaming and maps to nearby Redbox kiosks. An $8 monthly subscription also covers the rental fees for up to four DVDs, although customers can upgrade to Blu-ray discs for an additional dollar. The bad news is that the app’s exclusive to Nokia’s Lumia range right now — plebes with other WP8 devices will have to wait until the end of January for general availability.

Roku players and Streaming Stick gain Redbox Instant support

Shortly after it was revealed that Redbox Instant will be coming to Chromecast, Roku has announced that the service is now available on most of its devices including the Streaming Stick. For those unfamiliar, Redbox Instant is the Netflix-esque video streaming service that accompanies the red DVD-dispensing boxes found in many stores. The service has […]

Redbox Instant channel launches for Roku players

Outerwall promised two months ago that it would offer Redbox Instant on Roku players, and the company is making good on its word by launching that channel today. The subscription movie service is now available for both the Roku Streaming Stick as well as conventional players ranging from the Roku LT to the Roku 3. There aren’t any visible new features in the Roku version of Redbox Instant, but we doubt that many customers will complain — they’re getting cheap movie streaming through a similarly frugal media hub.

Chromecast to gain Redbox Instant and Vimeo, others to follow

Google Chromecast was a nice surprise that Google rolled out earlier this month, making a solid attempt to find its way into the streaming entertainment industry (again) with a $35 dongle and simple setup. Though cheap, the device has run into criticism over its lack of content, which is presently limited to Netflix, YouTube, and Google Play. That will be changing soon, however, as Redbox Instant and Vimeo gear up to add support for the device, and others consider following.

Vimeo is a video-sharing website akin to YouTube, but perhaps of a higher-caliber, offering quite a bit of artistic videos, short documentaries, and similar content. According to the folks over at Gigaom, the video company confirmed that it will support Chromecast, eventually finding its way onto the device. Said the company’s vice president, “We’re excited about the emerging opportunities bridging mobile to Connected TV and we look forward to offering Chromecast support in our products.”

Then there’s Redbox Instant, which is similar to Netflix, allowing users to rent DVDs from their familiar red kiosk boxes found in convenience stores and other locations, as well as watch certain content via online streaming. Redbox likewise gave confirmation to Gigaom that it will be bringing its service to Chromecast. Neither it nor Vimeo’s availability on the Google device has a set date, however.

In addition, it also looks like some other services will be available in due time, among them being the maker of media centers, Plex, which tweeted: “Wow, lots of interest in Chromecast and Plex. Yes, we’ve ordered a few of them :-)” A spokesperson for the company is also quoted as saying that it is both optimistic about and looking into the device.

All of this follows hints that surfaced last week that HBO Go support could be coming to the device, which would be available to those with an HBO account. While content options on the Chromecast are still slim at the moment, those who have already got their hands on the device – as well as those who are waiting for their orders to ship – will have more robust entertainment options in the coming months.

Redbox Windows 8 app out now, cuts lines with desktop reservations

DNP Redbox now one of Windows Store's 100,000 apps

It seems like everywhere we look, a Redbox is there. If you could use a helping hand to find one, though, there’s now a Windows 8 app for that. Available today, the app assists in tracking down the nearest kiosk (our guess: outside your neighborhood’s gas station), lets you reserve movies and games at the cardinal cabinets as well as watch trailers. An instant streaming app for the OS still hasn’t surfaced, but we’d even settle for an update that reminds us to return discs on time.
