Autonet Mobile puts a new twist on the car key (video)

Autonet Mobile puts a new twist on the car key video

Remember Autonet? The company — which is best known for providing manufacturers like Chrysler with in-car WiFi hotspot solutions — is launching a new product designed to replace the key fob and enable low-latency remote vehicle control and diagnostics from any smartphone. Of course, this is nothing new — car makers have been featuring apps to unlock doors, start the engine and monitor vehicles for some time now. Still, most existing solutions rely on satellite or 2G connectivity and often require the car’s computer to be fully booted before responding to commands, which makes for a slow an unreliable experience. Autonet’s new system combines in-vehicle hardware, mobile software and cloud services to streamline this process for both manufacturers and owners. More after the break.

Tenth Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote Control

Fans of the Doctor Who series would definitely have watched the shows many times over, so much so that some of those who are more engrossed might actually go down the path of collectibles, which is fine if you are single, but often to the chagrin of your other half because “good money” is deemed to have been wasted on such collectibles. Perhaps you need to travel back in time so that you can find a spouse who is equally in love with the Doctor Who series as you, which is why you decided to pick up the £69.95 Tenth Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote Control, no?

It does not matter what gadget you want to control, be it the TV, iPod, or other compatible devices, you can do so with multiple gestures. There is a quartet of modes in the Tenth Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote Control that will allow you to become a fully-fledged Time Lord – in your own mind, at least. Built to a 1:1 scale, this is a true blue replica that does more than just sit pretty on a display shelf, where it was made by 3D scanning of David Tennant’s Tenth Sonic Screwdriver. Being an officially licensed collectible by BBC Worldwide, who knows, it might be worth something many years down the road. The universal remote control part of this collectible can be used with up to 39 remote control codes at any one time, now how about that?

Chrome Remote Desktop for Android coming soon: Splashtop beware

Down in the depths of the testing arena for Google’s Chrome known as Chromium, you’ll find the first whispers of “Chromoting”, aka Chrome Remote Desktop for Android – connecting the two worlds with a mirrored interface. While the directories themselves aren’t especially telling for the lay person, you’ll find the concept a bit more enthralling if you’re interested in controlling your computer from your smartphone from any location you may roam.

You’ll find Remote Desktop access inside of several of Google’s current services this summer, one of the most recent implementations being inside Google+ Hangouts. This service was introduced back in May of this year, allowing any user able to sign in with Hangouts to control a computer in the chat if it’d been checkmarked for access. This was well before Hangouts was introduced for Android as a bit of a re-branding of Google Talk and multi-form connection for mobile devices to the social network, mind you.

NOTE: Amongst the several apps with similar functionality to this on the market today is Splashtop, appearing not just on Android, but on Windows Phone, iOS, OS X, and Windows as well.

Chrome Remote Desktop was originally pushed out of beta back in October of 2012. That same month, SlashGear reviewed the Samsung Series 3 Chromebook and did a separate demonstration of Remote Desktop with the Chromebook and a MacBook Pro – have a peek!

Once this service appears in Android, it’ll take the form of a unique app with – tentatively – the same icon as the service inside Chrome. It was Francois Beaufort, Chromium evangelist and developer of neat new things that found the code we’re seeing here, complete with mention of the “Chromoting Android app” as it very well may be called in the end.

A Swiss Man Was Killed By His Remote-Controlled Helicopter

A 41-year-old man flying a Gaui X7 model helicopter in Lucerne, Switzerland suffered head and arm injuries and died after he was presumably struck by the helicopter. The model weighs 5 pounds, is about 4 feet 5 inches long, and has a rotor diameter of about 5 feet 4 inches.

GlassTesla brings Model S remote control to Google wearable

An unofficial Tesla Google Glass mashup brings remote control of the coveted electric car to Google’s wearable computer, with GlassTesla bringing unlocking, location, and auto-climate control to the head-mounted display. The app, handiwork of Sahas Katta, can show current charge status of the Model S as well as offer control over starting and stopping recharging, and it’s even possible to pop the charging port itself from the headset.

If you’re away from your Model S, and careless enough to lose it in an oversized parking garage, GlassTesla can pinpoint it on a map and offer you directions. There’s also remote horn and headlights control, central locking, and sunroof control, all from Glass.

A security summary, meanwhile, shows the status of the car’s doors, trunk, or sunroof, as well as what the temperature is both inside and outside. Tesla’s automatic climate control can also be triggered remotely, getting the car either warmed up or cooled down before you get to it.

However, because of the safety limits Tesla applies, some of the functionality isn’t supported while actually on the move. According to Katta, it’s not possible to sound the horn or flash the headlights while the car is in motion, though opening the sunroof is permitted. There’s also no ability to see current speed, since Glass isn’t designed for real-time dynamically changing cards.

As Venn Diagrams go, the overlap between Tesla Model S owners and Google Glass Explorer Edition owners is probably a small one. However, GlassTesla is already getting some high-up attention, with Google’s Vic Gundotra (who does happen to have both) flagging up the app, though not confirming whether or not he’s actually tried it out himself.

If you don’t have Glass, but you do have a Model S in the garage, then Tesla does offer a remote control app for iOS which offers the same functionality.

Kinect-Powered Roaches Are an Army of Grossness

It’s not very common to find an enthusiastic fan of motion-controlled gaming, but it’s rarer to find an enthusiastic fan of roaches. But for the unlikely fan of both, researchers have developed the best(?) of both worlds: Kinect-controlled cockroaches.

Tomy’s Self-Transforming RC Cars Could Be the Greatest Toy Ever

Tomy's Self-Transforming RC Cars Could Be the Greatest Toy Ever

We’ve already brought you a few clips of Kenji Ishida’s amazing self-transforming RC cars, but so far he’s only made about ten of them available to the public, at a staggering $24,000 a piece. But there’s great news for those of us who’ve chosen to pay off our mortgages instead of buying a toy robot: Takara Tomy is apparently working with Kenji and Brave Robotics to mass produce these as what will probably be the greatest toy ever.
