It can take a land lubber quite a while to get their sea legs, so MARINTEK (the Norwegian Marine Technology Research Institute), working with Norway’s Salt Ship Design, have created a boat that can actively cancel out the rolling motion of the ocean’s waves.
Artificial muscles lift 80 times their weight, pave the way for robot Superman
Posted in: Today's ChiliOther than a few models from Boston Dynamics, most robots don’t exactly leave us quaking in fear. That might be off the table soon, though, thanks to a breakthrough from researchers at the National University of Singapore (NUS). They’ve developed polymer-derived artificial muscles that can stretch out up to five times in length, enabling them to lift 80 times their weight. That could one day result in life-like robots with “superhuman strength and ability,” which could also run on very little power, according to the team. They expect to have a robotic limb that could smack down any human in arm-wrestling within five years — putting a possible cyborg version of Over The Top alarmingly within reach.
A team of 20 researchers from University of Alberta proudly announced a commendable achievement on Thursday. Using no fewer than five different experimental methods, they’ve discovered over 3,000 different chemical compounds in human urine. And it only took them seven years.
For the most part, once something’s been printed—a photo, a map, an article—there’s not much you can do to change it. And for person’s dealing with visual impairments, that can be a problem. So researchers at Wakayama University in Japan have developed a projector system that allows print materials to be adjusted, even after they’re printed.
Kirobo, the mini-robot / Japanese Space Agency marketer, has spoken his first words in space after being launched last month. The University of Tokyo and Toyota research project wished Earth “good morning” and mouthed other space platitudes from his perch at the International Space Station. The bot can also recognize voices and will converse with astronauts as part of his mission goals. Then, after he’s lulled them into a false sense of security…

A group of scientists from Canada have discovered evidence that an extraplanetary body came down over Canada about 12,900 years ago. The evidence suggests that the comet might have triggered the death of giant animals roaming North America and triggered a cooling spell in the Earth’s climate. Scientists say that during the Younger Dryas climatic […]
Fog harvesting systems—giant nets that collect and funnel billions of tiny drops of water into a reservoir—are already in use in parts of the world where rainfall is rare. But researchers at MIT, working with experts from the Pontifical Catholic University in Santiago, Chile, have found a way to vastly improve those nets, increasing the amount of water they collect by as much as five fold.
Data NASA provided to scientists from an airborne science mission has revealed the existence of a massive canyon in Greenland that has been hidden for the entirety of human history on the Earth. According to the scientists, the canyon has the characteristics of a winding river channel and is at least 460 miles long. That […]
Google borrowed flocking patterns from birds for early design of its ambitious Project Loon, rolling out blanket coverage simulations to prove to naysayers that delivering wireless internet access from the stratosphere is practical. While some have questioned how the project expects to be able to consistently provide service when the mesh-networking balloons responsible are moving […]
Hybrid and ZEV car prices could rise by up to $4,000 as battery technology fails to keep pace with dwindling federal tax credits, Toyota has warned, despite aggressive targets for low-emission cars in the US. Development of cheaper, more power-dense batteries are likely to bring down the cost of building cars like the Prius, Toyota’s […]
