New iPad Mini To Use Samsung Retina Displays, Says WSJ

New iPad Mini To Use Samsung Retina Displays, Says WSJWhen you have a high profile company such as Apple, any move that they make would definitely come under the microscope of the masses. Not only that, the world on the whole has generally stopped whatever they are doing in recent years just to see what new stuff Apple has thought up of, and the next generation iPad mini is definitely not an exception to this rule. In fact, we have had to go through a slew of rumors concerning the new iPad mini in the past few months, among them including its speculated release date, numerous delays and reasons accompanying it as well as some backtracking, not to mention LG, Sharp and AU Optronics being listed as possible display suppliers for the next generation iPad mini.

Well, we do know that Apple and Samsung’s working relationship is not one that would imply them being the proverbial “best buddies”, no thanks to some spats in the past, and while there were rumors going around earlier this year that Apple would not be working with Samsung for the new iPad mini, although the WSJ is reporting otherwise now. Apple might have managed to overcome display issues concerning the new iPad mini with the help of Samsung, where it was cited that “people familiar with the matter” informed WSJ that Apple had to settle for Samsung’s display division in order to deliver the visual goods for the new iPad mini.

iPad mini 2 and iPad 5 tipped for August production: specifications MIA

As months pass since the last release of devices in Apple’s iPad range, suggestions of production of the two newest entries in the environment appear. This week word comes from Taiwan that one of Apple’s most-used manufacturing groups, Foxconn, will be ramping up production on both a second generation of the iPad mini and the 5th generation of the full-sized iPad as soon as next month in China. This news comes attached with a supposed production sample of the new iPad mini, sharper edges, black casing, thinner body and all.

What you’re seeing here is an in-the-flesh version of what Apple has been tipped to be bringing to the market later this year for some time. The iPad mini 2 (or more likely simply titled iPad mini, replacing the first), will carry with it a set of internals advanced beyond that of its predecessor. At the moment it’s still suggested that this model will bring a newly minted mini-sized Retina display, but just as many tips to the contrary have surfaced due to production restrictions.

NOTE: This article’s image contains a photo of the original iPad mini (on the left) and the suggested iPad mini 2 from Mobile China Union. They appear extremely similar in size and shape, save the thickness and possible sharpening of corners – if only very slightly.

It’s also been tipped – all the way back in May – that the iPad mini processor will be the same as its original iteration while the Retina quality display will come first.

According to leaked schematics from late last month, the iPad 5 (still titled “iPad”, as it were) will be popping up with iPad mini-like edges and an ever-so-slightly smaller body. This will be the first time since the switch to the iPad 2 that the iPad will have made such a significant leap from its current body type.

And don’t forget the iPad 5 case leak from back in April as well. They’re looking a lot more realistic the more we’re seeing these iPad mini edges, that’s for certain.

Tim Cook suggests iPhone variations could be in Apple’s future

Many critics have stated that Apple needs to branch out from its current device line up and toss variations of the iPhone into the mix, offering larger screens, different price points, and hardware variations. The logic behind such ideas is that more competitors than ever are emerging, and some consumers prefer larger screens and different hardware than the iPhone offers, driving them to different products. When asked about this at the D11 conference this evening, Apple’s Tim Cook addressed the issue, but not before suggesting such devices could be in Apple’s future.

Tim Cook

The question initially started with using the iPod as an example, with the device having been offered in many different iterations at different price points, such as the Nano, Mini, Classic, Shuffle, etc. Why was Apple willing to produce such a variety of iPods, yet has never branched out in a similar way with the iPhone, with the only price point variations resulting from the subsidization differences between current and previous-gen models?

Before answering the question, Cook kicked off his response with a simple suggestion that such could be a reality for Apple in the future. “Well, we haven’t [launched variations of the iPhone] so far, that doesn’t shut off the future. But let me answer the question on why we haven’t so far. It takes a lot of work, a lot of really detailed work, to do a phones right when you manage the hardware, software, and services around it. We’ve chosen to put our energy into getting those right, and have made choices in order to do that.”

He went on to explain that with the iPod example, each iPod played a different role in some way over the others, with the Shuffle in particular getting heavy focus in his response. The Shuffle was different from the Nano, the Nano from the Classic, and each appealed to a specific type of consumer. The products Apple offers, he said, serve different needs, and the question is whether it is yet at that point with the iPhone.

He was also asked about phablets – devices with larger screens and possibly also styluses, and whether that is something Apple should pursue. Said Cook: “A large screen today comes with a lot of trade-offs. People do look at the size, but they also look at things like whether the photos show the proper color, battery life, brightness, longevity … At this point, we’ve felt the Retina is overwhelmingly the best.”
