We should have had a Blade Runner game back in the old NES days, but sadly it never showed up. Well, fans of old-school video games and fans of Blade Runner will love this video created by 8-Bit Cinema. Yeah, I know it’s more 16-bit than 8-bit, but it’s the game we should have been able to play, but never got.

Sadly, this isn’t a real game someone created, but just an all-too-brief animation. So, we still have no 8-bit or 16-bit Blade Runner game. All we’ve got is this PC version. Please, someone make this happen. I know that there is some talented person out there somewhere who can do it.

In the meantime, this is a fun video and we can all pretend that we have the cartridge sitting on the shelf.

Final Fantasy VII was the first game in the FF series to have 3D graphics. Those graphics probably look laughable now, but the squished low polygon rendering of the characters make for really adorable figurines. Look! It’s freakin’ Biggs and Wedge! Well, Gaia’s Biggs and Wedge.

The figurines were designed by Joaquin Baldwin and are printed using full color sandstone. All of the main heroes are included along with some of the villains and many of the secondary characters, including Sephiroth, Zack Fair, a Moogle, a Chocobo and the Turks.

Ride on Cid’s airship and head to Shapeways to order the figurines. They cost between $13 to $32 (USD) each. One funny thing about this set is that Joaquin seems to have priced each figure based on the amount of material needed to print it. This means Cait Sith and the Chocobo are the priciest ones, even though Cloud, Sephiroth and many others in the set are more popular than those two. The cheapest of course is Barrett’s kid Marlene.

Retro game art specialist James Bit made this set of canvas prints that will be familiar to anyone who’s played Super Mario Bros. 3. It’s the spade panel minigame! These prints won’t net you extra lives if you match them accordingly, but at least they’ll take you to a more youthful state of mind.

Each print is stretched on a ready to hang frame and measures 10″ x 8″. According to James Bit, it’s made from wood, canvas, ink and – the magic ingredient – pixels.

I love indie games. There’s just a sort of a creative freedom, ingenuity and singular artistic vision in many of these games that makes them often more fun than the big blockbusters. One unusual little indie game that recently popped onto my radar screen was Cart Life. It’s actually been around for a couple of years, but it’s new to me.

The game dusts off the old lemonade stand type sim of the 1980s and breathes fresh life into it. Cart Life was developed by Richard Hofmeier, and offers a retro style befitting its gameplay.

The game puts you in charge of the livelihood of one of several citizens of a fictitious city, and asks you to build and operate their various street vending businesses. But these characters not only have business goals to meet, they each have needs and addictions which must be fed, as well as unique personality traits. It’s as much about money management and business skills as managing risk and reward for your sims.

Cart Life is available as a free download for Windows PCs here. Richard also offers a deluxe edition with a bonus game, soundtrack MP3s and a bonus playable character for just $5(USD). There’s also a fan-made Mac port available here.

Do you miss walking over the TV to change the channel? We know LG does. It just launched a 32-inch LCD set, the 32LN630R, that resembles a ’70s tube TV down to the working channel and volume dials. Not that the company is foregoing modern luxuries, mind you — its 1080p, IPS-based display supports both USB-based storage and MHL video from mobile devices. The 32LN630R is available now in South Korea for 840,000 won ($754), but there are no immediate plans to sell the TV to nostalgic Americans.
