Spock Dreams of Uhura In This Starfleet Uniform Bra (B-Cup Me up, Scotty!)

Every time I think that the guys over at SceeneShoes have run out of ideas for more geeky braziers, they come up with another. Previously, we had some Nintendo and Pokemon bras, followed by a TMNT bra, and then an Xbox 360 controller bra. Now, we’ve got a bra designed to look like a Starfleet uniform.

starfleet bra

While not as outwardly sexy slutty as those latex Trek uniforms, this Star Trek bra can actually be worn underneath other garments, and only revealed when you want to show off your goods to your Captain or First Officer. From the design, I’m assuming this is based on the uniforms from The Original Series. I suppose that’s a good thing, because with the newer uniforms, that would mean you’d have to touch your boob in order to activate your communicator. Awkward.

The (unofficial) Starfleet bra is available over on Etsy for $30 to $40(USD) depending on size, and is not (yet) available in red.

Mega Man Cutting Board Rocks, Man.

Fans of Mega Man will find this kitchen accessory as hard to resist as taking down Dr. Wily. It’s an awesome cutting board assembled to look just like the classic 8-bit gaming icon.

mega man cutting board 1

Jim Van Winkle of Prairie Oak Studios made this intricate cutting board from a whopping 504 individual blocks of wood. He used walnut, maple, cherry and purpleheart woods to provide the appropriate pixel shading of Mega Man. The 16.5″ x 13.25″ x 1.75″ thick cutting board is food safe, and finished with oils and waxes to protect it from damage, should Fire Man, Ice Man or Stone Man take a shot at you while preparing dinner.

Given its complexity, the Mega Man cutting board isn’t cheap – selling for $230(USD) over on Etsy – but with nearly 2000 individually glued joints, there’s a ton of labor that went into this amazing thing.

Super Mario Clone World beats New titles with Atari graphics

This week it appears that one developer fan of Nintendo’s hero series Mario has taken his love for the original to a whole new level – backwards. Atari Age forum member Sprybug has taken data from the original Super Mario Bros. from the original Nintendo Entertainment System and has begun transferring it backward into a game that very well could have been played on the Atari 2600. This gaming system pre-dates most young gamers entire lives by several years at least, and boasts graphics with pixels so large you’ll be in danger of cutting your finger on them – and now you can play Mario here, too!

With the 8-bit graphic universe shown in the original Mario Bros. game now transferred down, down, and down some more into a much more basic environment, one thing shines through the brightest: Mario was a breakthrough game. Not just because it was fun, but because the gameplay and the environments in the game were so advanced that they look good even when you strip the whole thing down to its most basic components.

In the video above you’ll see a gleefully old-school looking demonstration of the game with what should be some rather recognizable elements all around. The game has right around 16 levels re-created right this minute, and more are on the way. This game also currently exists entirely in a 32k file – amazing!

If you want to try the game out for yourself, you’ll need first to get yourself a Harmony Cartridge. This bit of hardware will plug in to your original Atari 2600 and allow you to play hundreds of pre-made games and classics without the hassle of actually going out and finding the games (which of course, are no longer produced today) themselves. And new games are being made here in 2012 as well – as evidenced by Mario!

The game is being shared right now by Sprybug so that you can tell him how awesome it is. Music and sound effects are included – and yes, you will be able to fire fireballs if you do become FireMario.

Fujifilm X-E1 leaks into view oozing vintage cool

Fujifilm XE1

A Japanese site called Digicam Info has leaked pics of a previously unknown Fujifilm mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera, the X-E1. The natty looking snapper bears a strong family resemblance to the X-Pro1 model, but looks to be flaunting a pop-up flash, and lacks the optical viewfinder of the flagship model. The sneaked pics show black and silver-topped models, as well as a previously announced lens, the 18-55 f/2.8-4.0 OIS zoom that has yet to hit the market. No other details, such as price, are available yet, but the model will likely slot behind the X-Pro1 and ahead of the X100 to fill out the retro-look X-family.

Play This Borderlands 2 Demake While You Wait for the Real Game

Waiting sucks. But unfortunately we have to wait a while longer for Borderlands 2. It will arrive on September 18th in North America and September 21st internationally. The developer, Gearbox Software, knows that we need a fix so they’ve released an official 16-bit demake of the game.
the borderlands
It should be just enough to whet your appetite while you are waiting. This demake is titled The Border Lands. Players can pick one of the new characters that are available in Borderlands 2, but sprite form. It looks like it’s all about shooting enemies, level up, and pick up loot.

In other words it’s just like the Borderlands that you know and love. To play you just use the arrow keys to move and the space bar to fire. Depending on what weapons you use, it could be a quick game, though. For instance, a railgun that fires both in front and behind of the player will annihilate most enemies easily, even the bosses. It is just some fun while you bite your nails and wait for the real deal to arrive. Check it out here.

Space Invader Floor Tile Job: Intentional or Random Coincidence?

While we’ve definitely seen our share of video game themed bathrooms here on Technabob, all of the ones I’ve come across seem very much like they were intentionally done that way. Not so much with this bathroom, which has a subliminal message for all fans of retro gaming…

space invaders tile

Look carefully at the tiny blue tiles, and you’ll see a Space Invader lurking there, right in front of the toilet. The guy who snapped this picture says his employee that installed the tiles in the bathroom of this drug treatment center is a video game fan, so he suspects it was intentional, but I like to think that it was totally random. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve stared at the marble tiles in my bathroom and tried to imagine a pattern was there, like a demonic human face staring back – but it’s always my mind playing tricks on me – like the man on the moon, or Jesus on a grilled cheese sandwich.

Have you guys come across other video game characters lurking in seemingly random patterns? Feel free to post in the comments if you find any cool ones out there. And installations by Invader don’t count.

Pianocade: Super Mega Synthesizer Arcade Controller Combo

The Pianocade is the embodiment of chiptune music. It’s a synthesizer that looks and works like an arcade controller, down to the analog joystick and token buttons.

But the Pianocade’s gamer theme isn’t just skin deep. It’s open source, hacker-friendly synthesizer board is based on the NES and Game Boy sound hardware, so it makes the monophonic pings and blips out of the box. Here’s a demo of the Pianocade’s features:

And here’s the Pianocade being used by Shaun Hatton aka Megashaun to play live:

Portmanteau Devices is selling one- and two-octave variants of the Pianocade; the former costs about $250 (USD) and the latter is about $350. You can also pre-order just the electronics for about $100.

Portmanteau Devices said that they will try to make the Pianocade also work as a USB game controller out of the box, but that’s not their priority right now. They did say that they might release a firmware update later on if they can’t do it by the time the device is released. Perhaps one of you clever hackers will even do the job for them.

Insert Coin: Instacube is a hip, Android-based digital photo frame for your Instagram feeds

In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you’d like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with “Insert Coin” as the subject line.

Insert Coin Instacube is a hip, Androidbased photo frame for your Instagram feeds

Ever wished you had another option aside from using Instagram’s mobile apps and permalinks for viewing your retrofied photos? The folks at D2M certainly did, resulting in what it likes to call Instacube. The square gizmo is essentially a 7.5-inch (2.5 inches deep), OneStep-themed digital photo frame purposed specifically for displaying and interacting with Instagram photo feeds. Up front, a 6.5-inch LCD touchscreen (600 x 600, the full resolution of photos on the service) allows you to tap between pictures and type when needed. Apart from that, three physical buttons on its top handle power, switching feeds and favoriting photos. Basically, the unit looks out for your specified hashtags so it can follow multiple Instagram feeds and automatically cycle through the images — niche yes, but it’s still undeniably cool.

Android runs the show (no word on what version) atop an undisclosed ARM processor that’s bundled with 4GB of storage and 256MB of RAM, while b/g/n WiFi keeps it connected to Instagram independently. Speaking to its OS, tinkerers should be pleased to know that D2M plans to continually enhance its functionality, and potentially open it up to developers. Also worth note, Instacube sports a built-in rechargeable battery, allowing you have it operate completely untethered when the mood strikes.

Interested in pledging your own coin to help fund the project? 1,000 backers can get in on their own Instacube for a cool $99, after which it’ll jump to $150. Another 1,000 can get a duo for $199, and the same goes for a limited edition “vintage spring” green variant that’ll set you back $249 a piece. Past that, bulk options are on offer maxing out at $5,000 for 40 units, and $10,000 for 25 and a “Design Experience” with D2M. All in all, the Instacube project has 31 days to reach a $250,000 funding goal, with the first units set to ship in March 2013 if all goes well — hopefully we’ll see more than just renders of it well before then. Hit up the project at source link and the video overview past the break if you’re interested in liberating your Instagram snaps to that larger display.

Slap Wrap Watches Celebrate the Glorious Materialism Of the Nineties [Watches]

If you grew up in the 90s you probably spent your teen years lusting over incredibly expensive sneakers, begging your parents for a leather 8-Ball jacket, and wrapping obnoxiously patterned Slap Wrap bracelets around your wrist. It was a time of unbridled materialism that this reborn Slap Wrap watch seems to celebrate instead of condemn. More »
