Roombots Pave The Way For Reconfigurable Furniture

Roombots Pave The Way For Reconfigurable FurnitureHave you watched X-Men: Days of Future Past in the cinemas already? It is definitely worth checking out, especially the way the sentinels work and function. Well, I suppose it is somewhat similar to the scene in Transformers: Age of Extinction trailer, where Stanley Tucci’s character proclaimed that the Transformer’s techno-organic material is one of science’s most important discoveries. Well, what if tiny robotic modules around your home would work in a similar manner? This is what the Roombots are all about.

The Roombots happen to be the brainchild of Swiss researchers who intend to develop reconfigurable robotic modules which will be able to connect with one another, enabling them to form just about any kind or type of furniture, and even change their shape as and when required. For instance, once you’re done eating on the dining table, have it “transform” into a coffee table for use in the living room.

These self-assembling Roombots happen to band together in order to form static furniture, where they are attached to one another using various connectors that allows them to take on the desired form factor. The ultimate goal? To create self-assembling interactive furniture which is capable of being used in various ways.

If You Watch One Video Of An Algae-Eating Autonomous Robot Today, Make It This One

lhousden9mar14ivan31 Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the nasty, stinky water, the Symbiotic Machine comes along and blows your mind. This little robot, built by designer Ivan Henriques, sucks in dirty water, breaks down the walls of algae cells, and then uses the resulting juice in the same way you use lemon juice to create a simple battery with a copper plate and photocell. Sony Patents Self-Washing Robot

Sony Patents Self Washing RobotI would suppose that Sony’s most famous robot release would be their beloved Aibo, which happens to be a robotic pooch that was the bomb back in the day, although the $1,900 price tag back then would make any potential customer think more than just twice as to whether to splurge that kind of money on what is essentially an expensive toy. I think that even when we factor in inflation today, $1,900 can still do plenty for the average man on the street who is more interested in bread and butter issues. Well, it seems that Sony is not quite out of the robotics scene just yet, having filed for a patent that will focus on a camera lens that could be used in a robot hand.

So far, it remains rather tricky to determine as to how this particular patent is going to be implemented, although the patent filing was accompanied by images of a few robots, where one of them can be seen above. It looks like NEC’s PaPeRo from certain angles, and the idea put forward by Sony seems to point to this robot being able to wash itself whenever it becomes dirty, allowing it to maintain itself while helping humans out in everyday chores.

Sounds convenient, no? This patent sees Sony crossing their fingers that such a robot can clean its sensitive camera eyes alone, and know just when it is due for a cleaning. This is made possible by comparing images snapped across time to figure out whether there is grit and grease building up. I do wonder whether the Transformers have such inclinations…

Nona said she based the EVA foam parts on papercraft templates posted by members of the prop maker community The 405th Infantry Division, modifying them as needed. She also made a replica of Gipsy Danger’s chain sword. It took her a total of six months, a lot of trial and error, and about $175 (USD) to finish the costume.

Americans Are Surprisingly Optimistic About the Future of Technology

Even in an age of security leaks and government surveillance, amazingly, Americans still feel pretty good about the role that technology will play in their lives, according to a new study. However, when you ask them about the specific advances—like bioengineering, wearable tech, drones, and robots—Americans are a bit more wary of welcoming the future.
