Robot Guitarist Plays With 78 Fingers

We have talked about the all-robot band Compressorhead before at the beginning of last year, and it seems that they have competition from another 3-piece robot band from Japan, known as Z-Machines. In fact, Z-Machines’ “guitarist” is unique in a sense where it features a whopping 78 fingers (!), while the drummer would perform at an insane level thanks to 22 arms attached to the body. The band’s creator worked alongside composer Squarepusher at first as an attempt to explore the creation of music using robots, but in the end, they ended up with a whole five track album.

Maybe This 1/4 Scale Robocop Figure Is Too Realistic

Maybe This 1/4 Scale Robocop Figure Is Too Realistic

If the recent RoboCop remake has made you extra nostalgic for the original films, this 1:4-scale figure should provide you with all of the fond memories you need. In fact, with 30 points of articulation, and a face painted with a multi-layer technique that even shows veins beneath the skin, from a distance you might just mistake it for the real thing.

Table Tennis Champion To Face Off Against Robot In March

We can measure things like speed, reaction time, strength, and so on, but can we really measure the human spirit and determination? Perhaps will we find out next month as world famous table tennis player, Timo Boll, will be going head-to-head with Kuka KR Agilus. Table tennis fans are probably scratching their heads wondering who is this mysterious challenger. Well it is not a person, but a robot created by German robotics manufacturer, Kuka. The company has decided to pit the Kuka KR Agilus robot against Timo Boll come 11th of March to celebrate the company’s first even plant in Shanghai which spans an impressive 20,000 square-meters.

Kuka has several Agilus models available, but apparently the AR Agilus is the model that has been designed to work at high speeds with high levels of precision too, meaning that the robot should be quick enough and precise enough to react to Boll’s serves and rallies. We’re not sure how this will play out but like we said, can a robot beat the human spirit and determination? After all Boll is not only Germany’s most successful tablet tennis player, but is also a World Cup winner and European champion, but what do you guys think? Who would you place your money on?

The Original Robocop Was A Christ Allegory

The Original Robocop Was A Christ Allegory

The original Robocop, released in 1987 and directed by Paul Verhoeven, was not only one of the best science fiction films of the last three decades—"a brilliant comedy operating in the guise of an ultraviolent action movie," as Tom Scocca described it on Gawker—it was also a Christian allegory. At least according to Paul Verhoeven himself who, in a 2010 interview, referred to his resurrected robot hero as "the American Jesus."

Plotclock Writes the Time by Hand: Useless & Depressing Machine

We’ve seen a handful of unique analog digital clocks, but the Plotclock has to be the most unusual of the bunch. It’s also a metaphor for a dozen sad things. Made by Thingiverse member joo, Plotclock writes the time by hand, then erases what it just wrote so it can write again.

    plotclock by joo 620x465magnify

Joo used an Arduino Uno, three servos and 3D printed components to make the clock. Though I strongly suspect that he also added a liter of sighs, a patch of wrinkled skin and some shredded tax forms to the device.

This clock knows life’s a waste of time. Check out joo’s page on Thingiverse for more on the futility of it all.

Remote Control Nerf-Firing Robots Are the Answer To Every Kid's Dream

Robots and Nerf, two toys that are the staple of every child’s messy bedroom floor, are finally coming together in what could be one of the best (and safest) ways to harass your siblings, parents, and even co-workers. Because Hasbro’s new Combat Creatures let you remotely unleash a barrage of foam darts from a safe distance.

Robo-termite builders could colonize Mars without our help

Robotic termites capable of building complex structures without requiring human supervision, prior programming, or even intercommunication could change the way construction, emergency services, or even space exploration are managed, borrowing … Continue reading

    Termite-Inspired Robots Build Without Supervision

Termite Inspired Robots Build Without SupervisionThere is nothing quite like nature itself to provide the kind of inspiration for humanity to improve itself. After all, was it not the thought of soaring in the skies with the rest of the birds that led man to create the aeroplane? Well, this time around, termites are the catalyst for robots which are able to stack up blocks without the need for a central plan, and we are not even talking about a random mess here, but rather, simple structures coming to life along the way. Scientists have used the way termites work as a model to develop tiny robots which are able to churn out a simple structure without the need for any prior blueprint.

These Autonomous Bots Build Structures With a Hive Mind of Their Own

These tiny construction robots look like they’re doing a well-choreographed dance, working together to build a structure. Who’s driving? Nobody—these micro machines cooperate autonomously, using the same concept that guides termites and bees to build huge structures without a supervisor or blueprint. Look at them go!
