SociBot-Mini: a spooky robot that wears any face

SociBot-Mini is a 60-centimetre-high bot that can adorn a friend’s face and even predict your mood or guess your age. Spooked? The brainchild of Will Jackson and his colleagues at … Continue reading

Crabster Robot Could Change The Way We Explore Underwater Sites

Crabster Robot Could Change The Way We Explore Underwater SitesThis looks like one of those headcrabs from Half-Life, albeit it being a mechanized one. Known as the Crabster, this is a robotic wonder which has the ability to revolutionize underwater exploration, thanks to the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology that will test the robot in the Yellow Sea as the Crabster assists archaeologists in shipwreck site exploration.

SociBot Mini Predicts Emotions, “Wears” Human Faces

SociBot Mini Predicts Emotions, “Wears” Human FacesIt goes without saying that the modern day computer interface has come a long way from the humble days of the typewriter, and a possible area to explore in the future could be social hardware – the software’s already in place with the likes of Twitter and Facebook. This potential niche could be filled by the SociBot Mini, where it was specially designed to stand at 60cm in height, with a “face” that is made up of transparent plastic. A digital projector will throw an image there, and there are specially design contoured areas for a nose, mouth, and eyes.

Creepy Animatronic Doll Will Dance for You, Not a Good Thing

This is the creepiest thing I’ve seen in a long time. This life-sized animatronic doll will do a dance just for you. A creepy dance that leaves you feeling bad and sad and creeped out.

    creepy robot dancingmagnify

When I first saw this I was like, oh cool. A sexy robot doing a dance. Should be cool. Nope. Not cool at all. From the neck down it all looks good, but then you see that weird lizard-like face and watch it dance, you are sorry that you are sharing the same planet with it and want to kill it with fire. And its gaze follows you.

Jordan Wolfson’s imagination brought this animatronic figure to life. He had some help from his friends at Spectral Motion. The piece is currently being exhibited at David Zwirner Gallery in New York, where I will never ever go now. It incorporates facial recognition technology, allowing her to focus on, and follow visitors at the exhibition until they shiver and run away crying.

Glaucus Robot Can Be Inflated, Looks Soft And Squishy

When we talk about robots, most of the time the images that come into one’s mind are those that hail from the likes of the Transformers, or perhaps even movies such as Pacific Rim and Real Steel. Well, aren’t robots supposed to be built that way – all tough on the outside and armed to the teeth? Apparently, the folks behind the Glaucus did not get the memo, since this is a new kind of robot that is small and squishy.

Droplet Robot Sprinkler Delivers Efficiency In Watering Plants

Droplet Robot Sprinkler Delivers Efficiency In Watering PlantsRobots are here to stay, that goes without saying. The thing is, just what is the extent that you would want a particular robot to help you out around the house? Some chores like vacuuming the floor can be left entirely to the robot vacuum cleaner to get the job done, as you would have found other ways to spend your time in an equally productive, and yet more fun manner. How about making sure that all of the plants in the lawn is watered? This is where the likes of Droplet comes in handy, being a smart sprinkler that “knows” how and when to water your lawn.

Inflatable Huggable Robots Could Replace Complex Mechanical Automatons

Inflatable Huggable Robots Could Replace Complex Mechanical Automatons

All of those images of a dystopian future where mankind is enslaved by giant robots don’t seem so terrifying if these inflatable air-powered alternatives are realized. Not only do they seem downright adorable and huggable, they’re also incredibly easy to make once a mould has been 3D printed.

Masked Animatronic Robot Dances In An Extremely Lifelike Manner

The uncanny valley is not a physical place, but rather, it is the idea of a robot being so human-like in behavior, that it can get rather creepy to boot. Artist Jordan Wolfson has crossed into such a territory as you can see from the video above, where this masked animatronic robot will gyrate to a slowed-down version of “Blurred Lines”, in a rather enticing manner. Right now, this animatronic robot remains on display at the David Zwirner Gallery until April 19th next month.

Bionic Handling Assistant A Glimpse To A Doc Ock Future

It was four years back that a certain German engineering firm known as Festo thought up of a concept for a robotic arm. This particular idea of theirs seemed to be an amalgamation of an iron snake, a mechanical claw, as well as a tentacle straight out of a science fiction movie, where it is known as the Bionic Handling Assistant that functions closest to that of an elephant trunk. Well, from there, another question arose. What should a robot arm grab? It is time to look to nature for inspiration, as the scientists turned to babies.

A magic pancake stacking robot machine is why technology exists

You can have your iPhones and iPads and Androids and laptops and smart watches and Google Glass and fitness trackers and wearables. Have it. Take it all away. I only want this magic pancake stacking robot in my life. It’s the only reason we invented technology.
