Mobster’s Daughter Alleges GTA 5 Used Her Story And Likeness Without Her Permission
Posted in: Today's ChiliGiven the high-profile nature of Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto franchise, it is not surprising to find that there are many who are attempting to sue the developers. In the past we have heard claims of how some of the characters in the game are based on real people, like in the case of Lindsay Lohan who believed that the bikini-clad girl in Grand Theft Auto V was based on her likeness (it is not true, a different model was used for the likeness).
Well the latest lawsuit to land on the doorsteps of Rockstar comes from a daughter of the mobster responsible for bringing down John Gotti. Karen Gravano asserts that the character, Antonia Bottino, is based on her and her life story and she is suing Rockstar for using it without her permission. She is demanding $40 million in damages. Grand Theft Auto 5, safe to say, was probably one of the more highly-anticipated games of 2013, given the popularity of the Grand Theft Auto franchise. The game has proven to be a huge success and according to earlier reports, the game managed to generate $800 million in sales on its first day alone, and now according to a report from Take Two, Rockstar’s parent company, they revealed that they have managed to ship over 32 million copies of Grand Theft Auto 5 as of the 31st of December 2013, which we have to say is pretty impressive. Red Dead Redemption was released back in 2010 and found itself surrounded by positive reviews. That being said, we’re sure many gamers out there are interested in seeing a sequel released, especially in today’s day and age where we might look forward to different gameplay as well as improved graphics. Well the good news is that a sequel to Red Dead Redemption could be in the works and could even be launched later this year, at least that’s according to Baird Equity Research, who has come to the conclusion that Take-Two and Rockstar could be making an announcement regarding the sequel later this year.
According to analyst Colin Sebastian, “We expect product announcements over the next year such as extending GTA V to other platforms (e.g., PC, next-gen consoles), the next Red Dead, etc., to help improve revenue and earnings visibility. In addition, the company has significant potential to grow digital/onnline revenues, which should help improve gross margins and add visibility to growth.” Their analysis is based on how they expect Take-Two to meet the guidelines they issued to shareholders for the next financial year. Of course neither Take-Two nor Rockstar have make any statement regarding any of the games mentioned above yet, so do take it with a grain of salt for now, but would you guys love to see a Red Dead Redemption 2?

Given the success and popularity of Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto 5, we’re sure many PC gamers out there are just dying to get the game on their computers. Petitions have been signed and according to our previous report, references made to the PC version of the game have been sighted in bug reports. As to how accurate those earlier reports are remains to be seen, but it looks like Amazon seems to think that they are legit, or they know something we don’t, but it looks like both Amazon France and Germany have no qualms about listing GTA 5 for the PC on their websites.
Like we said it’s impossible to tell whether Amazon France/Germany are simply predicting that an announcement will be made and that their source of information is from the internet, just like the rest of us, or if they have known this for a while and have simply gotten ahead of themselves, but given Amazon’s size and reputation, the latter might not be a stretch of the imagination. Either way last we heard Rockstar had nothing to share regarding availability of GTA 5 for the PC, which is odd given that previous GTA games have been released for the PC, so the lack of PC support for GTA 5 is a little weird. In any case hopefully we will be hearing from Rockstar soon with an official announcement, hopefully, rather than a denial. What do you guys think? Does Amazon know more than they are letting on? Or are they simply speculating?

For those unfamiliar with the Rockstar patent consortium, they are basically a group of tech companies that have joined forces to buy Nortel’s patents from a while ago. The companies that are part of the consortium include big names such as Apple, Microsoft, and Sony, just to name a few. Back in December, Google filed a complaint against the consortium, basically alleging that the consortium are a bunch of bullies who have come together to harass other tech companies, such as Google themselves, and it looks like Google is not alone in feeling that.
In yet another lawsuit filed against the consortium, it seems that this time several US cable companies have come together and decided that the consortium’s plans to break up into smaller shell companies is just not fair. Apparently the plan was for the consortium to divide themselves up into smaller shell companies, with each shell company holding a patent needed by the cable companies. From there it is presumed that the shell companies will approach the cable companies and ask them to license the patents in question or risk getting sued for obscene amounts of money.
It is unclear how the lawsuit will proceed and what the Rockstar consortium will do in response to the lawsuit, but for those interested in taking a look at the lawsuit in its entirety, click here for the details.

When GTA 5 was announced, the lack of PC support was surprising given that previous GTA games have been released on the PC along with console as well. Rockstar has not announced anything and claimed that they had nothing to share about GTA 5 for the PC for now, but that did not stop gamers from creating a petition which has since well-exceeded half a million signatures. It also did not do anything to stop the rumors from spreading that the PC version of GTA 5 would be released this year. Well the good news is that thanks to an alleged GTA 5 bug report from Rockstar (via PC Gamer), it seems that there have been several references to GTA 5 for the PC being made, suggesting that at the very least GTA 5 for the PC is being worked on.
The reports make references to the PC and mentions both 32 and 64-bit operating systems as well as note on DirectX 11. There’s no way of telling if these bug reports are the real deal, but at the same time we highly doubt Rockstar would cut off their PC gaming segment entirely either as it would no doubt alienate a ton of gamers who might not own consoles, or who would rather get the game for their PC instead. It has been speculated that the PC version of GTA 5 will see a release sometime in March, so hopefully that means it won’t be too long until we learn more about it. In the meantime who’s excited at GTA 5 for the PC?

Most of the time when playing a video game, the number of protagonists that the gamer controls is usually one. This is more or less the standard, even in games such as Baldur’s Gate where your character is the main character and basically you lose the game if your main character dies, versus the other five members of your party. Rockstar decided to turn things on its head with Grand Theft Auto 5 when they introduced not one, not two, but three protagonists which gamers could control throughout the entire game. It was an interesting idea and given the various successes of the game, it looks like Rockstar’s idea paid off, but was this something the developers knew would happen? As it turns out, not really.
In a recent interview with Edge, Rockstar North’s art director Aaron Garbut revealed that including three protagonists in the game was something of a leap of faith, and that there was a good chance it could propel the game to new heights of success, but at the same time could backfire really badly on them as well. “[Having] multiple characters was a leap of faith. It was an interesting idea, and it felt like we could do interesting things with it, but it also felt like a change to the core of the game that might backfire. I think it really worked out.” GTA 5 has been met with rave reviews to date but what do you guys think? Was one of the reasons the game played so well was because of the use of three protagonists, versus one?

GTA: San Andreas For iOS Released
Posted in: Today's ChiliWe reported last month that Rockstar is going to release Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for mobile devices in December. At that point in time, Rockstar did not provide a concrete release date. If you have been waiting to go back to the early 90s where CJ and the Grove Street Families owned the town, you don’t have to wait any longer. GTA: San Andreas for iOS has been released.
Unfortunately, the app is being rolled out in stages, which means that it isn’t live in all countries at this point in time. Folks in New Zealand can already get their hands on it through the app store, it is expected that the title will make its way to the U.S. App Store in a couple of hours. GTA: San Andreas will actually be available on Android and Kindle Fire devices as well. While there hasn’t been any word of the title going live on the Play Store just yet, it is believed that GTA: San Andreas will be released on iOS and Android on the very same day, so its possible that we might see the Android version later in the day. Select Windows Phone and Kindle Fire devices, which run a highly forked version of Android, are also expected to receive the title in the near future.
