[CES 2013] At CES 2013, Olympus unveiled its new TOUGH series lineup, with the STYLUS TOUGH TG-2 iHS as its new flagship. Just like its famous predecessor launched in May 2012, the Olympus TOUGH TG1-iHS a.k.a. “the world’s first high speed bright lens Tough camera”, it features a fast f2.0-f4.9. 25-100 mm (equivalent)  lens, a 3.0” high definition 610K OLED display and the iHS technology that combines a 12 MP BSI CMOS sensor and the Truepic VI image processor for super fast autofocus.

[CES 2013] Olympus has several rugged cameras as part of their CES 2013 lineup, and one of them is the STYLUS TOUGH TG-630 iHS, which as you can see in the photo above, looks like it will be able to withstand a fair amount of abuse and continue operating like nothing was wrong. If you’re the sort of person who is particularly adventurous and participates in rugged sports, or maybe work in an environment where you’ll need a camera that can take a drop or a dip in the water, then perhaps the TG-630 iHS could be worth taking a look at. Featuring a 12MP BSI CMOS sensor, it might not have the same megapixel count compared to other compact cameras, but then again we suspect that customers who go for the TG-630 iHS are probably more interested in its ruggedness.

Olympus Stylus TG-625 Tough adds AF light for tricky shots in rough situations

Olympus Stylus TG625 Tough adds AF light for tricky shots in rugged scenes

It’s been awhile since we’ve seen Olympus tackle the more affordable side of its rugged camera lineup, which makes its latest entry feel overdue. The Stylus TG-625 Tough effectively replaces the TG-620 by adding something that’s been commonplace in the camera world: an autofocus illuminator light to improve focusing at night or, more likely with this camera, when it’s plunged 16 feet underwater. Outside of a new double-lock system, though, you’re looking at the hardware that has defined most of Olympus’ rugged line this year, including a 12-megapixel backside-illuminated CMOS sensor, a 28-140mm equivalent lens, 1080p movie making and a 3-inch LCD. The Japanese should get the TG-625 the soonest, on August 31st. There’s no word on whether or not there’s an upgrade on the way for the US, although we can picture it slotting into the American lineup without much trouble.

mophie Outride lets you capture those adrenaline pumping moments with your iPhone

So you are a proud owner of an iPhone, are you not? While the device is nice to look at and use, it is not exactly the most rugged smartphone out there in the market. This means bringing it along with you whenever you go skateboarding or want to perform some crazy stunts with your pair of in-line skates is not such a good idea, unless the iPhone itself has some sort of extra rugged protective case. Of course, recording your daredevil experiences would also require you to purchase a rugged camera which can be mounted onto a helmet, but why spend good money on that when an add-on like the mophie Outride costs a fraction of that money?

The mophie Outride, in a nutshell, is a hardware and app solution that places the power to record and share tricks, tracks, rides, and epic moments in the hands of action land and water sports enthusiasts, but they will need to own an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S beforehand. At least you no longer need to purchase a dedicated video camera, but rather, use the mophie Outride to record your latest daredevil exploits. Fret not for the mophie Outride’s durability, as it is waterproof and impact resistant while sporting a range of custom mounts to capture action shots in the surf, snow, dirt or concrete.

Ross Howe, vice president of marketing at mophie, said, “With the ever-growing action sports market, and our success in developing ruggedized products for those rough-and-tough tech users, we felt we were ready to design and develop a product that would take the iPhone and its camera capabilities to its limits. While the action sports community has a lot of camera and video options to choose from, they weren’t able to share their moments with the community in real time. OUTRIDE gives the action sports community these capabilities in a durable, compact, quality and cost-efficient way.”

What are some of the advantages of using the iPhone 4S or iPhone 4 alongside the mophie Outride as the action sports camera of choice? It will be able to let you review your own footage or shots, share those moments and follow others in the community, all in a jiffy – as long as there is a decent Internet connection at that point in time, that is. Available from the middle of September onwards, the mophie Outride will come in different bundles that will cost you anywhere from $129.95 to $149.95.

Veho Muvi HD ‘NPNG’ Edition action camera impressions (video)

Veho releases Muvi HD 'NPNG' Edition action camera, we go handson

Action cameras. We love ’em. Much like buying new sports gear, owning one makes you feel one step closer to the adventurer you know your true self to be. While we’re familiar with more than one contender for the “gnarly throne“, who said there wasn’t room in the rankings for one more? Veho‘s been making pocket-friendly cameras for some time, even of the action variety, but this latest edition — in conjunction with No Proof No Glory (an extreme sports video hub) — sees it making the clearest move yet towards carving its own slice of the high-octane pie.

The latest member of the Muvi HD family will do you full HD at 30fps, along with 720p (at both 30 and 60 fps) plus the usual other resolutions — 960p, WVGA, etc. Of course, it’ll also do stills (if you don’t mind them all being wide-angle) and it’ll even just record audio if you like. So far, so good. What really got us interested, though, was that Veho has squashed two of our most common bug-bears with action cameras by including a viewfinder / screen and a remote control as standard. So, with hope in our hearts and glory to prove, we strapped one on and took it for a ride. Scoot past the break for the impressions.
