DROID MAXX keeps the kevlar, Motorola stays rugged

Have no worries about the upcoming collection of DROID devices from Verizon being just as hardcore as the previous set. With yet another set of images appearing today of the devices – or at least the largest of the three – we’re to understand that kevlar patterning continues to be in order. What’s more, it would appear that the area around back-facing camera’s lens brings more ruggedness than ever before, texture and all.

droidMAXX

The image you’re seeing above is a combination of a photo and a render. While all sources point toward this device being amongst the reboot of the DROID series, it’s the red stripe down the middle that’s the most questionable. It’s far more likely that the leakster who posted said image added this stripe on their own – not too difficult a photoshop job in the end.

Meanwhile this device has been spotted with black, white, and even full-on red backs over the past few weeks. The color exists across the major part of the back of the device and spills over under the rim of the machine in the front. You can barely see this bit in the black edition due to the blackness of it, but it’s there!

purplez

The press event that’s basically a lock for revealing this and the DROID ULTRA as well as the Mini is set for July 23rd. These devices will effectively act as reboots of the DROID RAZR HD, DROID RAZR HD MAXX, and DROID RAZR M. Meanwhile we’ll be waiting for Motorola’s big release in the Moto X, a device that’ll be revealed on its own in a Google-centric event, likely sometime inside August.

SlashGear also recently had some hands-on time with the back-breaking Panasonic Toughbook CF-AX2 if you’d like to take a look. This machine was revealed well within the bounds of this same future-ready range of Windows 8 machines so doesn’t fall under this reboot schedule – it’s already prepped!

The same goes for the Panasonic Toughbook CF-C2, a display-turning transformable notebook ready to bring on both tablet and notebook abilities in a hardcore form. And for those of you that want to say small and don’t necessarily feel the need to move forward with Windows 8, there’s always the Panasonic Toughbook SX2 from back in 2012 – always room for a strange trackpad or two!

Samsung Galaxy S4 Active review: a top-tier phone in a water-resistant package

DNP Samsung Galaxy S4 Active review a toptier phone in a waterresistant package

After Samsung’s latest product push in London, we have nothing short of a Galaxy S 4 franchise on our hands. While the company unveiled its expected Mini version along with a photography-focused variant, it also took a step in the rugged-device direction by announcing the Galaxy S4 Active. With IP67 water and dust protection, the phone promises to see you through 30 minutes of aquatic activity at a time. Ruggedness aside, though, this device is quite similar to the GS4, albeit in a slightly heftier — and arguably more attractive — package. We spent some quality time with Galaxy S4 Active on AT&T, which retails for the same $199.99 as the original S 4. So is this a better pick? You know where to find out.

Casio G’zOne Commando 4G LTE hits Verizon for heavy-duty battle

Several years have passed since the original hardcore phone from Casio hit the public, also on Verizon. Here we’re seeing the Casio G’zOne Commando 4G LTE, a machine made for getting beat up in the field while it remains powerful enough for the standard Android-loving phone user, complete with a bit of the ol’ 2013

Casio G’zOne Commando 4G LTE lands on Verizon with faster data, more letters

Image

This isn’t too big of a surprise given a preceding leak earlier this month, but Verizon and Casio have now gotten official with their latest, and suitably rugged, G’zOne phone. As the name suggests, the Commando 4G LTE adds some faster data not found in its predecessor, although the differences are less readily apparent beyond that. You’ll get an “enhanced G’zGear multi-sensor tool” that promises to deliver accurate information of the world around you, as well as a couple of upgraded cameras to capture that world (8-megapixel with 1080p recording ’round back, plus a 1.3-megapixel front-facing cam). You can also take advantage of a Glove Mode to use the touchscreen without exposing your hands in particularly harsh conditions, although specs remain a bit light beyond that. Look for this one to be available starting June 27th for $99.99 on the usual two-year contract (and after a $50 mail-in rebate).

Update: Verizon has now confirmed some additional specs in a press release (also found after the break), including a dual-core 1.5GHz processor and, unfortunately, the same 480 x 800 resolution as before.

Hands-on with the NEC Terrain: the company’s first US phone in eight years

NEC Terrain surfaces at Pepcom because it's waterproof and was in the water

Let’s face it: no rugged phone is going to get more attention today than the Galaxy S4 Active. Just the same, NEC is showing off the Terrain, its first handset for the US market since 2005. The phone, which is hitting AT&T for $99 with a two-year agreement, is mainly aimed at the enterprise (read: field technicians and other mobile workers). Since it’s unlikely to reach mainstream consumers, we won’t be running a full-on review, but we did take the opportunity to get hands-on. As you’d expect of a device that can be immersed in water up to 30 minutes, this thing’s coated in rubber, with a sealed USB port and a secure (but removable) battery cover. It’s a bit chunky for a phone, to be sure, but at 6.06 ounces it’s still eminently portable. In fact, the rounded edges and soft finish make it more comfortable to hold than some of the more minimal handsets we’ve seen recently.

Other than that, you’ll be pleased to find an unskinned version of Android, though it’s 4.0 and not a newer build like 4.2. The capacitive screen responds well to taps and swipes, though the 640 x 480 resolution isn’t going to knock anyone’e socks off — and neither will the washed-out colors. Performance-wise, the dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 8960 processor means transitions happen quickly, and there isn’t any tiling in the Chrome browser. We also got on well with the QWERTY keyboard, though the buttons are packed in quite tightly. And that’s a good thing: it’s slim pickings for anyone who wants a portrait QWERTY Android phone. Finishing up our tour, you’ll find a microSD slot (to support the 8GB of built-in storage), dedicated speaker and push-to-talk buttons and dual 5MP / 0.3MP cameras, with an NFC radio under the hood. It’ll be available tomorrow on AT&T’s LTE network, through the carrier’s business channel, specifically. Check out the hands-on photos below — we even got a requisite shot of it in a fish tank.

This week the group behind Verizon’s DROID brand have released a trailer for a game that’s already been out on the market in BETA form: D:COM. Casio Commando 4G LTE reportedly spied enroute to Verizon

Casio Commando 4G LTE reportedly leaks for Verizon with extratacky UI

Casio’s G’zOne Commando was designed with all the subtlety of a cruise missile, but it must have resonated with at least a few Verizon customers. That would explain why @evleaks has posted an image of the reported follow-up, the Commando 4G LTE. The device spied here would be as conspicuously rugged as its predecessor, and the custom Android interface would receive another round of overdone machismo — witness the metallic app tray and watch-like widget. The leak doesn’t include hardware specs, but an earlier FCC filing for a similar device suggests that NFC could accompany the expected LTE. There’s also unconfirmed talk of a Snapdragon S4 Plus processor. Launch details remain a mystery, although we wouldn’t be shocked if the new Commando is available while it’s still warm outside.
