mentalKase: Drop Your iPhone at 6,000 Feet? No Problem!

Just like many of you, I dread dropping my phone. It happens from time to time, but I’ve never had a drop damage my phone. That being said, there’s no way that my phone could survive a 6,000-foot drop, or could it?

mentalKase iphone case

The people behind mentalKase have developed a case that’s supposed to be capable of surviving a drop from up to 6,000 feet – that’s more than a mile, folks.

The styling of the mentalKase isn’t that hot, but the foam rubber that it’s made of is ideal for protecting electronics. This means that you could probably throw your phone around and it would never be a problem, if you can get used to the size and bulk of the case.

With less than a day of funding left in this Kickstarter project, and more than $40,000 in funding missing, this case will probably not be funded by Kickstarter, but it might be released for retail nonetheless. You’ll have to pledge $45 for an iPhone 4/4S case or $50 for an iPhone 5 case.

Kyocera Torque hitting Sprint March 8th, carrying $100 price tag and Bear Grylls’ seal of approval

Kyocera Torque hitting Sprint March 8th, carrying $100 price tag and Bear Grylls' seal of approval

We first heard about — and went to town on — Kyocera’s latest smartphone toward the end of last month. Thankfully, the Torque happens to be an “ultra-rugged” device, meaning its creators didn’t mind at all when we tossed it against a wall or two. The LTE-packing Ice Cream Sandwich handset was made to the Military Standard 810G standard, so you can drop it, get it dirty or even submerge it in up to a meter of water for half an hour or so and go back for a little more Fruit Ninja — it’s also been placed in the hands of Mr. Man vs. Wild himself, Bear Grylls. The handset will be tumbling onto Sprint March 8th, with a $100 price (post two-year contract and $50 mail-in rebate).

Samsung announces Galaxy Xcover 2 for the outdoorsy types

Just last week we saw a leak of Samsung’s newest rugged smartphone, the Galaxy Xcover 2. Aside from a blurry photo and a few details, we didn’t really know much about the new device. However, Samsung has made it official today. The Galaxy Xcover 2 is the company’s latest phone meant for adventurers and outdoorsmen/women of all kinds.

Samsung says the new device is dust and sand proof, and you can even dunk it in water for up to thirty minutes, thanks to its IP67 certification. There’s even a dedicated camera button and a wrist strap so that you can take photos underwater. The phone has a tight seal all around, including a battery cover lock to give the device add protection.

The Xcover 2 has a 4-inch WVGA 800×480 display, which may not seem like a fantastic option, but we’re guessing that those who pick up this phone for their hiking trips may not care too much about the quality of the display. Speaking of hiking, the new device has enhanced GPS + GLONASS capability that enhances satellite detection by up to 20% to make sure you never get lost in the middle of nowhere.

The phone has a 5MP rear camera and VGA-quality front-facing camera. Of course, if you’re out hiking and want to capture some beautiful shots of the scenery, you may be better off with a dedicated shooter, but the Xcover 2 will certainly work in a pinch. Other than that, the phone has a 1GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage (with microSD slot), Bluetooth 4.0, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean running the show. No word on pricing or availability just yet

Samsung Galaxy Xcover 2 revealed: tougher, faster, stronger

There’s always a market for rugged phones that are dust- and water-resistant. Whether you’re a construction worker or maybe you just have a tendency to drop your phone a lot, there seems to always be a need for tougher phones. The Xcover is Samsung‘s own rugged phone, and it turns out that the sequel, the Xcover 2, has made an appearance.

S7710

We discovered Samsung’s original Xcover device back in 2011, and while it never really gained any major popular, it proved as a solid option for those wanting a tough and rugged handset. Now, SamMobile has some details on the Xcover 2, which comes with faster internals and some better specifications all around.

The Xcover 2 has a 4-inch TFT display with a WVGA resolution of 800×480, which certainly isn’t anything to write home about, but we don’t expect owners to be too concerned with specs anyway. On the back, there’s a 5MP camera with a 0.3MP front-facing camera. There’s also 4GB of internal storage with microSD compatibility for up to 32GB.

Of course, the image is a little blurry, so we can’t make out the finer details, but it looks like the device will come with three physical soft keys at the bottom. Other than that, the device will run Jelly Bean, and will come with a surprisingly low 1,700mAh battery. Samsung plans to officially unveil the device at Mobile World Congress next month.

Runbo X5 and X3 rugged Android phones moonlight as walkie-talkies, cost just $320

Runbo X5 and X3 Androids

We’ve seen a handful of rugged Androids in our time, but none are as affordable and as weird as these ones at CES. The backstory here is that a couple of Chinese guys in camouflage gear approached us at our CES stage, and after an awkward conversation, it turned out that they just wanted to show us the three rugged phones they brought all the way from Shenzhen. Starting from the right we have the Runbo (like Rambo?) X1 IP67-certified featurephone cum walkie-talkie, which packs a 2-inch 176 × 144 display, a 0.3-megapixel front-facing camera, a laser pointer, quad-band GSM plus 800MHz CDMA cellular radios, 400 to 470MHz range for the software-configurable walkie-talkie, a surprisingly loud speaker and a 2,200mAh battery. This will be available for ¥980 or about $160 on Taobao online store (the Chinese equivalent of eBay) in the next couple of days, and we’ve been told that there will also be a variant with GPS added.

But the real stars of the show are the two brick-sized vanilla Android 4.0.4 devices. The phone pictured in the middle is the Runbo X5, a device featuring a 1GHz dual-core Cortex-A9 MTK6577 chipset, 1GB RAM, 4GB storage, microSD expansion, a 4.3-inch 800 x 480 IPS display, an app-triggered laser pointer, an eight-megapixel main camera, a 0.3-megapixel front camera, a super loud speaker (again) and a massive removable 3,800mAh battery. And yes, this also comes with a 400 to 470MHz walkie-talkie radio (up to 10km range; with detachable antenna), along with the additional 850/1900/2100 WCDMA radio, two SIM slots (WCDMA plus GSM), WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0 and GPS. These specs are the same for the Runbo X3 on the left, except for the smaller 3.5-inch 800 x 480 IPS panel to make space for the QWERTY keyboard below it. The best part here are the prices: both of these IP67-certified devices are available on Taobao or the official website for just ¥1,999 or about $320, which is a bargain for both the ruggedness and the fact that these double as standard walkie-talkies. US folks can also order directly from eBay for $380, which is also a steal. But does this surprisingly low price reflect the quality? Find out in our hands-on after the break.

Rocstor unveils three ruggedized pocket drives at CES: Amphibious X5, Hawker HX and Lancer LX

Rocstor unveils three ruggedized pocket drives at CES Amphibous X5, Hawker HX and Lancer LX to arrive later this month

We’ve seen quite a few external enclosures trotted out at CES already and now Rocstor’s looking to reveal its cards. The company has announced three ruggedized pocket drives: the Amphibious X5, Hawker HX and Lancer LX. Following up last year’s X7, this year’s Amphibious model casts off the Smart Card while keeping the AES-256 encryption and both FIPS and NIST Cryptographic Engine validation with single-factor authentication. USB and FireWire connections return for the key-code unlocking unit in 64GB to 512GB SSD options and HDD varieties ranging from 250GB to 1TB. The Hawker HX keeps all of the above listed specs except for the FireWire connections and the pass code access. Finally, the Lancer LX scraps the super secure internals, but brings back FireWire — adding a second port to boot — and touts 64GB to 256GB SDD and 500GB to 1TB HDD models. All three offerings sport aluminum-clad, shock-absorbing ruggedized frames and will arrive this month. No word on pricing for any of the trio yet, though.

Olympus intros upgraded Stylus Tough TG-2, TG-830 and TG-630 rugged cameras

Olympus intros upgraded Stylus Tough TG2, TG830 and TG630 rugged cameras

Olympus knows many of us will be jonesing for a rugged camera once the weather warms up, and it’s more than happy to deliver with a trio of refreshed Stylus Tough point-and-shoots. The TG-2 iHS flagship is all about going closer and deeper than before: it preserves the 12-megapixel CMOS sensor, 25-100mm equivalent f/2.0 lens and 1080p video of its predecessor, but introduces a new Microscopic Macro mode that Olympus claims can provide extreme detail from as little as 1cm (0.4 inches) away. The body’s waterproofing is also resilient enough to survive at a deeper 50 feet, just in case the TG-1 isn’t quite a match for that upcoming reef expedition. The TG-2 will arrive in March, and it should undercut its predecessor’s original asking price at $380.

Those who aren’t quite so committed to rough-and-tumble photography still get a few updates of their own. The TG-830 iHS adds geolocation to the TG-820’s formula with both GPS and an electronic compass to show the way; its 16-megapixel CMOS sensor is also new, although we’re more interested in a newfound option to shoot stills while recording video. At the entry level, the TG-630 iHS is a close cousin of the recent TG-625, adding a front metal plate to the 12-megapixel model we know. The two will ship alongside their bigger sibling in March with respective prices of $280 for the TG-830 and $200 for the TG-630.
