Is this the Samsung Galaxy S IV or is it in disguise again

Mere days before Samsung unveils its newest phone, a Chinese forum post has offered some purported shots of the Galaxy S IV. Now it’s worth mentioning from the outset that Samsung plays a good game of subterfuge. It masked the Galaxy S III ahead of its reveal last year in a blockier plastic frame and it could be that this phone, with a very Note-esque face and outline, is also a filler ahead of the final reveal. It could also be yet another phone that will slot in elsewhere in Samsung’s ever-expanding Galaxy family, or even a Shenzhen knock-off that’s jumped the gun — we spotted that the front-facing camera hole doesn’t quite align properly.

However, with that said, there’s still plenty here to muse on. The shots appear to be taken in a phone unlocking shop somewhere in China, with this GT-i9502 model apparently bound for carrier China Unicom. Interestingly (at least for a flagship), it appears to be a dual-SIM version, with the mono-SIM version apparently picking up model number GT-i9500 — a number that would fit in with the series so far. According to the leak, it’s running a fresh version of Android (4.2.1) with a 1080p display (no word on dimensions just yet), 2GB of RAM and a 13-megapixel camera on the back. The mention of a “5410” CPU suggests it’s Samsung’s Exynos Octa chip powering it and while AnTuTu might only recognize that as a quad-core chip, we noted during our hands-on with the new chipset that only four cores were being used at a time. We’re still hoping Samsung’s final design pushes the envelope a little further than a repositioned camera sensor and a new glossy texture — we’ve added a shot of this after the break. Rest assured, Jeremy will be letting us in on the big secret later this week.

Is this a Samsung Galaxy S4 test mule?

All eyes are on Samsung’s Galaxy S4 “Unpacked” event this Thursday to see what the company has for Android addicts, but new leaks in China suggest it’ll be a powerhouse at least. What’s said to be a dual-SIM Galaxy S4 for China Unicom has been spotted at forum 52Samsung, complete with some supposed benchmarking results tipping a quadcore 1.8GHz processor and Full HD display among other things. However, the Note II-alike casing may well be a red herring.

samsung_galaxy_s4_mule_leak_1

The design certainly doesn’t stray too far from Samsung’s existing phablet, though the GT-I9502 – as the Antutu testing would have it – is presumably smaller than the Note II. It also doesn’t look much like what we’d expect given recent case leaks, which have indicated a return to the crisper, squared-off aesthetic of the Galaxy S II.

samsung_galaxy_s4_mule_leak_3

Then again, Samsung is no stranger to disguising its prototypes in order to try to keep some secrets until launch day. The Galaxy S III was a masterclass in secrecy, with Samsung using fake casings, highly limited access, and a code of silence to make sure nobody – even carrier partners – saw the final phone until the South Korean firm was ready.

If this really is a Galaxy S4 prototype, then, it could well be a disguised one: Samsung may have crafted a fake shell into which it could put real internal components so as to allow for partner testing. By keeping it so close to the existing Note II/Galaxy S III style, it wouldn’t be spotted as something more special while out in the wild.

According to Antutu, the phone has an Imagination Technologies PowerVR SGX 544MP GPU with OpenGL ES 2.0 support, and runs Android 4.2.1. 2GB of RAM and a 13-megapixel camera are also indicated; that all fits in with previously leaked specifications.

There’s a lot riding on it, either way, and not just for Samsung. Other Android OEMs – not to mention Apple – are watching the Galaxy S4 closely, as the handset’s predecessor swiftly eclipsed most other phones running Google’s OS. With HTC pinning its hopes on the HTC One, for instance, the company will be hoping its own innovations – such as the “UltraPixel” camera – still hold up to scrutiny once whatever Samsung has prepared is revealed.

We’ll know for sure in just a few days time, with SlashGear headed to New York City on Thursday, March 14, to see exactly what the new flagship can do. Join us then for all the details!

HTC One reportedly delayed due to UltraPixel camera shortage

Just when we thought everything was good and dandy with HTC’s latest smartphone, something just had to cause problems. But of course, what launch goes smoothly these days anyway? It’s reported that the HTC One is being delayed to due shortages with the smartphone’s UltraPixel camera module, according to industry insiders.

htc-one

According to BriefMobile, sources say that HTC is having difficulty scrounging up enough components to keep up with production of their new flagship handset, specially the components needed to put together the camera module. This could mean that delays may be imminent, and that next week’s planned launch of the device may have to wait. That, or not very many units will be available at launch.

It’s said that shortages of the voice coil motor (VCM) and the compact camera module (CCM) used in the HTC One’s UltraPixel camera are to blame, with yield rates only allowing for anywhere between 800,000 to 1.2 million One devices being manufactured over the next few months. HTC could still stick with their March 15 launch date, but shipments to smaller markets around the world may be delayed into May. This includes Singapore, Taiwan, China, and Japan.

This means that a US launch happening on time is still possible, and will most likely happen anyway, but the company may not have enough units on hands as originally expected. With the announcement of Samsung’s Galaxy S IV coming just a day before the HTC One launch, let’s hope HTC will have everything in place. Of course, this is only a rumor at this point, so take the possible delay with a grain of salt.

HTC Myst specs purportedly leak, hint at a second-gen social phone

HTC Myst specs purportedly leak, hint a second crack at a social phone

We wouldn’t exactly call the social networking-focused HTC ChaCha (aka Status) and Salsa resounding successes in the smartphone world when they were quickly overshadowed by… just about everything with a Facebook app, really. Still, there have been murmurs of a comeback, and Unwired View‘s historically reliable evleaks has obtained specs for what’s supposedly the follow-up. The HTC Myst (Myst #UL, to be exact) wouldn’t have any special tricks on the surface beyond preloaded Facebook apps, but it could be surprisingly well-equipped for a mid-range Jelly Bean device: a 4.3-inch 720p screen, a dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4, LTE and 16GB of non-expandable storage would be nothing to sneeze at. About the only sacrifices would be the 1GB of RAM and a potentially UltraPixel-free 5-megapixel rear camera. While there’s no guarantee that these details will reflect a shipping device, there’s talk of the Myst reaching the US as early as the spring — we won’t have long to learn the truth. Just don’t expect that other Myst in the box.

BlackBerry Z10 heads to AT&T on March 22 tips sources

The BlackBerry Z10 smartphone has been available in Europe for a while now. Sales for the device started off well enough, and then fell off significantly. A few days ago, we reported that many European carriers were slashing the price of the Z10 in an attempt to make it more appealing to customers. Price cuts this early on don’t bode well for BlackBerry and its hopes for the Z10 and the BlackBerry 10 operating system.

Customers in the US that are interested in the new BlackBerry smartphone may appreciate the fact that the launch date has been leaked for AT&T. The phone will come to AT&T in the United States on March 22. The launch date comes from sources claiming to be familiar with BlackBerry and AT&T’s plans, but those sources asked to remain anonymous because the release date hasn’t been announced officially.

The United States is a big market for BlackBerry, which reportedly earns about a fifth of its revenue within the US. The reason the phone didn’t launch in the US at the same time it launched in Europe and about 20 other countries was because of the longer testing times required by carriers in the United States. A spokesman for AT&T also declined to confirm the launch date for the BlackBerry Z10.

The upside to having a delay on the launch of the smartphone in the United States is that BlackBerry has already released an update for the BlackBerry 10 software. The update fixes issues with the battery life and lowlight camera performance for the Z10.

T-Mobile to layoff employees before MetroPCS merger, sources say

First news of the T-Mobile acquisition of MetroPCS surfaced back in October 2012. Thus began the long process of passing through government red tape before the deal could actually go through. Earlier today, we reported that the carrier has received a thumbs up from the Department of Justice to move forward with the merger. Now, according to sources, the next step will be a large number of layoffs at T-Mobile’s headquarters.

t-mobile

The sources are said to be from within the company, and say that T-Mobile employees know about the upcoming layoffs. The cuts could affect over 100 people in the carrier’s marketing group, among others, and is said to be slated for Thursday (tomorrow). Not surprisingly, T-Mobile hasn’t said anything on the matter, and declined offering a comment.

The layoffs will happen at the company’s headquarters in Bellevue, which has more or less been shielded from the layoffs that the carrier had issued over the past months. In 2012, in excess of 4,200 jobs were terminated, most of which (3300) were in the company’s call centers. Word was that T-Mobile would refill those numbers with new employees for its Business Sales department.

Many have feared that the T-Mobile/MetroPCS merger would result in massive job losses, a concern to such a degree that the FCC was asked by both Congress and the Communications Workers of America to put in blocks on the acquisition that would preserve jobs. T-Mobile hasn’t been doing fantastic financially, having suffered a 5-percent drop in sales in its fourth quarter over the same quarter the year previously.

EA COO accuses website of fabricating Dead Space rumor

Yesterday we reported that it was rumored that Electronic Arts canceled Dead Space 4 after the publisher discovered poor sales of Dead Space 3. However, it turned out to be false, and the yet-to-be-announced game hasn’t been canceled, according to EA officials. Furthermore, EA’s COO Peter Moore has accused a video game website for fabricating the rumor in the first place.

DS3_5-580x326

The website in question is VideoGamer, who originally reported the rumor and said that they heard from sources familiar with the matter that Electronic Arts canceled Dead Space 4. However, later that day we received word that Electronic Arts did not, in fact, cancel anything, and the rumors were greatly exaggerated.

Moore took to the comments on GamesIndustry.biz to clarify some things about the rumor, saying that the story was a “standard, shoddy website journalism recipe, born out of a desperate need to increase click-thru rates to support advertising revenue.” Obviously, it seems Moore wasn’t too happy about the whole situation.

Moore continued by describing said recipe, which consists of fabricating “a story using an ‘unnamed source’, post it first thing in the morning, add the letters” EA” to the story (oh, and link it to micro-transactions – always a fan favourite) and then stand back and enjoy the vitriol which you turn into revenue. Rinse and repeat…” VideoGamer has said that they’ll be addressing the situation later today.

Obviously, we post about rumors here on SlashGear, but as with every rumor, no matter how obvious or true it may be, we always take it with a grain of salt until we hear official word from the company that’s involved, and so should you.

Samsung to add “Smart Scroll” and “Smart Pause” in upcoming Jelly Bean update

We’ve talked about some of the rumored features coming to the Galaxy S IV in the past, including “Eye Scroll” and “Eye Pause,” two features that track your eyes in order to automatically scroll web pages or pause video, respectively. However, in a couple of leaked photos from an Android 4.2.1 update for the Galaxy S III, it looks like the feature will be coming to Samsung’s current flagship device under different names.

samsung_galaxy_s_III_review_sg_7-580x431-540x401241211

SamMobile ended up getting a few leaked screenshots from the update, and the “Eye Scroll” and “Eye Pause” features seem to be renamed to “Smart Scroll” and Smart Pause,” respectively. The screenshots were initially believed to have been from the Galaxy S IV, but SamMobile now says that they were taken from a Galaxy S III running the Android 4.2.1 update, which means that Smart Scroll and Pause features could come to GSIII at some point.

samsung-smart-540

If you’re not familiar with these two new features, Smart Scroll essentially tracks your eye movement, and will automatically scroll up or down on a web page depending on if the camera notices your eyes reaching the top or bottom of the screen. Smart Pause also tracks your eyes, but when watching a video, the phone will automatically pause it when it notices your eyes gazing off of the screen.

Obviously, we hope to learn more about these features on March 14, when Samsung will be holding an event to hopefully announce the Galaxy S IV, or so that’s what we’re believing to be the main focal point at the show. Hopefully we hear more about Galaxy S III compatibility with some of these new features, which should definitely give long-time GSIII a boost.

Beats is either ‘in talks’ with Apple over new music-streaming service, or it’s just very good at marketing

Beats musicstreaming service is in either 'in talks' with Apple or just very good at marketing

Excuse us, but we find it hard to swallow some of the hype that swirls around the Beats brand. That sounds harsh, maybe, but it’s borne out of experience. Anyway, we do trust Reuters, and that outlet claims to have it on good authority that Beats is “in talks” with Apple over a partnership involving the forthcoming Daisy music-streaming service that was formerly MOG. The word is that Tim Cook attended an “informational” meeting with Beats CEO Jimmy Iovine and “expressed interest” in his business model — whatever that is — and that Apple’s head of Internet products, Eddy Cue, was also present.

In news that is very much related, Beats has also revealed that it’s managed to generate enough buzz around the $12 million acquisition of MOG to raise a further $60 million in investment to help it to launch the rebranded and hopefully expanded service as a separate entity later this year. It’ll be interesting to see how the newcomer plans to tackle the already-entrenched competition, possibly with curated playlists and other MySpace-style ideas, and we’re fully prepared to eat our skeptics’ hats if it succeeds.

Apple reportedly in talks with Beats over music streaming service

According to sources said to be familiar with the situation, Apple‘s Tim Cook and Eddy Cue met up with Jimmy Iovine, the CEO of Dr. Dre’s Beats. The trio are reported to have talked about Beats’ planned music service codenamed Project Daisy, something it says is in reference to the first digital song. The talks weren’t about any sort of deal, however, instead spanning a wide range of topics about the service in general.

Says the sources, the meeting took place last month in Los Angeles, with Cook being interested in learning more about Project Daisy. The Chief Executive, along with Apple’s Internet products head Cue, talked with Iovine about Daisy’s business model and how the service will be rolled out to consumers.

Project Daisy was announced back in January, but little is known about it in terms of details. This rumored conversation has taken place after reports that Apple is looking into starting its own music streaming service to complement iTunes, something that will put it in competition with the likes of Spotify and similar services.

Back on February 22, we reported that Google is allegedly looking into launching its own streaming service to complement its vast music offerings via Google Play. The information cropped up over at the Financial Times, which reports that the service will offer both free and subscription options, with free playback being ad-supported.
