Sony expands high-end Cyber-shot lineup with RX100M2, full-frame RX1R (hands-on)

Sony’s brilliant RX100 and RX1 advanced point-and-shoots will live to see another day. Instead of replacing these two well-received pocket cams, the company has opted to expand the upper end of its Cyber-shot lineup, adding two very compelling new models. First up is the RX1R, a full-frame compact that’ll retail for $2,799, the same price last year’s model still commands today. In fact, it’s nearly identical to 2012’s flavor, with the exception of a redesigned sensor, which drops the optical low-pass filter in the interest of sharper captures. Of course, without that component, the camera is susceptible to moire and false color issues, so the RX1R is a better fit for landscape photographers than portrait shooters or photojournalists. It also sports Triluminous Color output through the HDMI port, for enhanced visuals on select HDTVs.
The vast majority of shooters are going to be much more excited about the Cyber-shot RX100M2, though. This “Mark II” variant of the RX100 borrows a few features from Sony’s NEX line, which is never a bad thing. Looking at the camera, you’ll first notice the 3-inch 1.3M-dot tiltable LCD, which can flip 84 degrees upward and 45 degrees downward. There’s also a Multi Interface Shoe for adding on accessories like a microphone, OLED EVF or external flash. Additionally, the USB port is now a Multi Interface Terminal, so it’ll work with the RM-VPR1 remote, and Sony added WiFi, NFC, and Triluminous Color output through the HDMI connector. On the imaging front, there’s a brand new 1-inch BSI CMOS sensor, boosting sensitivity to the tune of one full stop (we’re told ISO 3200 shots are comparable to ISO 1600 on the RX100). The top sensitivity also jumps from ISO 6400 to 12,800, which is pretty fantastic for a point-and-shoot.
As with the RX1, you’ll still be able to snag the RX100 for some time to come. And for many photographers, last year’s model may be the best pick — the RX100M2, while a bit more feature-packed, retails for a $100 more than its predecessor, with a $750 MSRP. The RX1R, however, maintains the same pricing as the RX1, at $2,799. Both cameras, which you can check out now in the hands-on gallery below, are expected in stores by the middle of July.

Not too long ago, full-frame digital cameras were cumbersome, heavy and very expensive. They’re still a long ways from making a home in the bargain bin, but Sony’s new RX1 definitely has size in check. In order to reduce the model’s footprint, the Japanese camera maker added a fixed 35mm lens to this point-and-shoot-esque digicam, modeled after the company’s gorgeous and versatile RX100. Both of these flagship Cyber-shots offer tremendous bang for your buck, but they’ll thin out your wallet faster than they’ll capture 10 consecutive 20-plus-megapixel frames. Still, as you’ll read after the break, our resident camera reviewer Zach Honig is very much in love.

If you were following Sony’s CES press event in detail, you might recall it launched with a quick video of a new Sony product made by hand. We now know that was to be the Xperia Z, and now the company’s released a curiously relaxing video of a (largely) off-camera tinkerer crafting the aforementioned phone, a Cybershot RX1 and one of its HD camcorders. All within five minutes. We doubt this is how the electronics-maker’s real production line works, but at least you get a glimpse into how Sony ensures its new flagship phone is kept ‘omnibalanced‘. (Hint: there’s not much space left beneath that glossy back panel.)

Sony Alpha A99 DSLR sample shots and video, plus comparison with the RX1 full-frame compact

Sony’s A99 marks the first time in years that the company has built a full-frame pro rig to compete with the big boys from Canon and Nikon. The hardware impressed when we got our hands on one a month ago, but the proof, as they say, is in the pudding — or in the photos in this case. So, we jumped at the chance to spend some time shooting with an A99 equipped with a 24 -70mm f/2.8 Carl Zeiss Vario Sonnar T Zoom Lens. Want to know how Sony’s latest and greatest performed? When we first got our hands on Sony’s full-frame compact camera, the Cyber-shot RX1, we were allowed to touch it, but we couldn’t use it for its stated purpose. Today, however, we got to put its 35mm image sensor and Zeiss Sonnar T* 35mm f/2.0 fixed prime lens to the test at a Sony event in San Francisco. If you were interested in any of Sony’s most recent camera revelations, it is now time to ready up that wallet of yours because Amazon’s set to start taking orders pretty shortly. At this very moment, the trio’s listed as “temporarily out of stock,” but this is presumably due to the retailer being in the middle of stocking shelves with the latest and greatest shooters from the Japanese electronics outfit. Still, you can take your pick between that flagship Alpha A99, the mirrorless NEX-6 or the full-frame Cyber-shot RX1 and order one now, though they’re not due to ship until October, November and December, respectively. As expected, both the A99 and RX1 are priced at around $2,800, while the NEX-6 carries a smaller $848 tag — this, of course, being for the body-only flavors.
