Visualized: Sony’s Cyber-shot RX1 gets smashed to pieces, in a good way

VIZ

A full-frame sensor inside a compact camera sounds like lunacy, but Sony’s managed it (at least, in principle) with its new Cyber-shot RX1. While only at the engineering sample stage, we’re already deeply in love with its retro body and the potential that lurks inside that 24.3-megapixel sensor. The question, of course, is how did they manage to squeeze that whopping hardware into such a small body? Take a gander through the gallery from our brothers at Engadget Chinese to see how it achieved such a feat.

Sony Cyber-shot RX1 camera debuts

When it comes to the world of digital cameras, it is safe to say that we are more or less spoilt for choice. After all, there are plenty of manufacturers out there with a gamut of offerings to choose from, that the uninitiated will definitely lose their way around unless they have different sites to help guide them select the camera that best suits their needs and requirements. Without much further ado, here we are with the Sony Cyber-shot RX1 that will boast of a 35mm full-frame image sensor and wide aperture f/2 lens, where it is touted to be the first full frame point-and-shoot digital camera in the world. Anyone else beg to differ? Let us check out just what the Sony Cyber-shot RX1 offers in the extended post.

As tipped earlier, the Sony Cyber-shot RX1 comes with an advanced 35mm full-frame 24.3-megapixel Exmor CMOS sensor and exceptional Carl Zeiss T*t 35mm f/2.0 fixed lens, being carried on a highly portable, lightweight camera body. Tipping the scales at just slightly more than a pound, it is by far and large smaller and lighter than any full-frame DSLR without sacrificing image quality, HD video quality or manual control. Of course, there is a price to pay for that, but we will get to the pricing details at the end.

With its unified lens and body design, the Sony Cyber-shot RX1 delivers performance which few interchangeable lenses are able to match, boasting a near-silent in-lens shutter and is far more compact than comparable lenses of interchangeable design. Full manual control options as well as an intuitive user interface make life easier for photographers to adjust all settings quickly and easily.

With the 35mm full-frame sensor within, the Sony Cyber-shot RX1 more than doubles the area of APS-C sensors commonly found in much bulkier DSLR cameras, letting it take in far more light when shooting. This means the camera’s sensitivity range is a generous ISO 100 – 25600, letting you shoot as low as ISO 50 in expanded sensitivity mode.

The asking price for the Cyber-shot RX1? A rather wallet burning $2,800. Any takers?

Sony Introduces the World’s First Full-Frame Compact Digital Camera with the DSC-RX1

For the first time, all the benefits of full-frame digital photography are available in a palm-sized compact camera. The new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 digital camera packs an advanced 35mm full-frame 24.3 MP Exmor CMOS sensor and exceptionally Carl Zeiss T*t 35mm f/2.0 fixed lens into a highly portable, lightweight camera body. Sony DSC-RX1 announced, is world’s first full-frame 24-megapixel point and shoot digital camera

It was just yesterday that we took a gander at the leaked image of the Sony DSC-RX1, and here we are with the official announcement on what could very well be the first full-frame 24-megapixel point and shoot digital camera in the world. Coming with a 35mm-sized sensor, the Sony DSC-RX1 is capable of shooting 24-megapixel JPEG or RAW stills, in addition to handling Full HD 1080p video recording in a cinch.

The fixed Carl Zeiss f/2.0 Sonnar T lens on the Sony DSC-RX1 comes with full manual controls, where you benefit from a maximum aperture of f/2.0 with 9 iris blades, delivering a shallow depth of field with attractive bokeh. As for the premium multi-layered T coating, that reduces ghost and flare caused by light reflection.

A quartet of four focusing modes, Single-shot AF, Continuous AF, Manual Focus and Direct Manual Focus are part of the equation, and you can select a maximum ISO setting of 25600, letting you capture images in low light conditions sans flash, although do expect plenty of noise to happen at that setting. The asking price for the Sony DSC-RX1 when it arrives this November? A whopping €3,200!

Sony’s Cyber-shot RX1 compact camera packs a full-frame sensor, ‘fits in your palm’ (hands-on)

Would you believe us if we told you Sony packed a full-frame sensor in a Cyber-shot-branded camera? It’s true! Say hello to the RX1, a “compact” digital camera for pros that’s packing the same 24.3MP Exmor CMOS sensor introduced today with the A99. Calling the rangefinder-esque one-pound shooter small might seem off-base, especially considering the Zeiss Sonnar T* 35mm f/2.0 fixed prime lens protruding from its front, but it’s not so huge (3-inches high by 4.5-inches wide) up against its tiny sibling, the RX100 — taking into account how much larger the RX1’s sensor is, well, that’s when this editor’s jaw basically dropped. While it’s not a “pro-NEX” as many had hoped, Sony explained that it chose a fixed lens to avoid the bulk of a lens-mount. We were able to get some eyes-on time with an engineering prototype of the unit, so click past the break for more details, close-ups and a brief video overview.

Sony RX1: The First Full-Frame Point-and-Shoot Camera (Which Is as Crazy/Genius as It Sounds) [Cameras]

Today we met Sony’s new flagship DSLR, the a99: A professional-grade, full-frame sensor camera that gives all the rest a run for their money. With that in mind, we’ll just call the Sony Cyber-Shot RX1 “Honey I Shrank the Full-Frame”. Yes, it’s freaking crazy. It’s potentially brilliant too. More »

Sony RX1 leaked

So we have taken a gander at what could possibly be the Sony A99, in addition to having being treated to photos that were allegedly snapped using the Sony A99. Apart from that, there was also the alleged Sony NEX-6 which was spotted with a bunch of new lenses in tow, so what else is there from Sony that has yet to be revealed? Well, how about the Sony RX1 that you see above?

The Sony RX1 does seem to be one of those compact shooters that is equipped with a full-frame sensor. In addition, it will carry a 35mm, f/2.0 lens without any button, or so it seems, to detach the lens. Apart from that, there is also the presence of a pop-up flash, a standard issue hot shoe for whatever accessories that you want to pick up, in addition to your fair share of custom settings on the mode dial to get you started. Would you pick up the Sony RX1 if the price is right? What is the right price for you, anyway?

Sony RX1 camera leaks with fullframe sensor in compact body, laws of physics slightly bent

Here’s something you probably didn’t expect: a compact Sony camera with a full-frame sensor. While Photoprice.ca was uncovering a treasure trove of leaked press shots that include the Alpha A99 and NEX-6, it also came across images of the RX1, whose body looks borderline pocketable yet stuffs in the same kind of sensor (and likely image quality) you’d normally reserve for pro-grade models. Several extra details reveal themselves right from the start. The RX1 is carrying a 35mm, f/2.0 lens with no apparent button to detach the lens — the included glass is probably as good as it’ll get. However, the RX1 is most definitely tuned for experienced shooters, with a toggle for macro focusing as well as dedicated controls for aperture and exposure compensation. We’re also liking that there’s a pop-up flash, a standard hot shoe for accessories and three custom settings on the mode dial. The slip doesn’t include mention of a release date or a price, but talk during the A99 slip mentioned a September 12th unveiling that wouldn’t shock us if it included multiple cameras — and we would be equally unsurprised if the RX1 carried the same high price commonly associated with other full-frame bodies.
