Red offers ‘truckload’ of one-time rental Scarlet-Xs for almost $5K off each

DNP Red offers 'truckload' of onetime rental Scarlets for almost $4K off

If you were thinking of getting a Red Scarlet-X 4K baby cinema cam for that pet film feature, but were on the fence because, well, $11,900 is a lot of cash — there’s good news. The company just announced they would be selling “a whole truckload of Scarlets” for $7,100 each instead, as they had been used on a rental for a “pretty special 3 second shot.” As such, the camera body has less than a minute of recording time, and would come with an SSD module, Canon mount and full warranty for that sum — along with the option to change out the MX sensor to Red’s upcoming Dragon model, presumably. Bear in mind that you’d still lack the SSD drive, LCD, batteries or charger needed to shoot, but even with all that would still be under the regular basic price — meaning you might be able to stop saving up and start shooting.

Yahoo hires Google exec Henrique de Castro as COO

Sure, Yahoo may already have former Google executive Marissa Mayer at the helm, but the company’s now hired Mountain View veteran Henrique de Castro to become its COO. Transitioning from his current role as Google’s worldwide Partner Business Solutions group VP, de Castro will take charge of “strategic and operational management of Yahoo’s sales, operations, media and business development worldwide.” In other words, he’ll wield his advertising and sales expertise to help guide the firm forward. At the latest, January 22, 2013 will be de Castro’s first day on the job, if he can’t tie up loose ends with Page and Co. sooner.

Amazon patents online haggling system that keeps buyers, sellers on the up and up

Amazon patents online haggling system that keeps buyers, sellers on the up and up

Haggling is so popular that it’s virtually mandatory in some parts of the world, and yet it’s rarely an option in the online space outside of informal auctions. If Amazon ever puts its newly granted patent into practice, however, we could soon be trying for a better price without the mock drama of a face-to-face encounter. The retailer’s proposed haggling system lets buyers and sellers make offers and counteroffers until they reach a happy medium, but with the kind of honesty check we only wish we could have in person. Both buyers and sellers get ratings that would account for their flexibility, typical closing prices and how likely they are to drop a deal before it’s done — a combination that hopefully excludes the cheapskates and those who’d simply keep our wheels spinning. Even if Amazon pulls the trigger on negotiated sales, though, it’s a fairly safe bet that there won’t be any leeway on that Kindle Fire HD.

Mists of Pandaria launch sales lag behind Cataclysm

Mists of Pandaria, the fourth World of Warcraft expansion, has been available for a little over a week now. Today we’re finding out that Mists of Pandaria sold 2.7 million copies in its first week on shelves, which definitely isn’t bad, especially for an expansion. However, when held up against the sales of Cataclysm, World of Warcraft‘s third expansion, Mists of Pandaria sales are a little underwhelming.

Cataclysm sold 3.3 million copies in its first day, compared to the 2.7 million copies Pandaria sold in its first week. It would seem that World of Warcraft players aren’t as excited for this particular expansion, and there could be a number of different reasons for that. First and foremost, it could be that Pandaria is failing to grab players’ interest in the same way Cataclysm did. Cataclysm, remember, involved the destruction of Azeroth at the hands of a dragon named Deathwing, which to some is probably a bit more exciting than discovering an ancient race of panda bears.

World of Warcraft could also be suffering temporarily at the hands of Guild Wars 2, which was released at the end of August. Hype for Guild Wars 2 was incredibly high during the lead up to its release, so it makes sense that some World of Warcraft players would leave the game for a little while to go see what Guild Wars 2 has to offer.

Regardless of the reason behind the lower number, Blizzard is still happy with Pandaria’s week one sales, and anticipation for this latest expansion was enough to push World of Warcraft’s active player count over the 10 million mark once again. Indeed, 2.7 million sales in the first week is nothing to stick your nose up at, it’s just interesting to see that Cataclysm managed to net so many more sales when it launched. What’s your take on the whole situation?

Bad Piggies Hits #1 in App Store in Just 3 Hours

Rovio is well-known as the developer and publisher of the insanely popular video game Angry Birds. This week, the company launched a new game called Bad Piggies that is told from the pigs point of view.

bad piggies

The game launched for the iPhone and Android platforms. The game proved so popular on iOS, that it only took three hours for Bad Piggies to take the top spot in the United States App Store. The game is really amusing and has players attempting to build contraptions to help the pigs escape the wrath of the Angry Birds.

If you want to try this game out for yourself, there are versions of the app available for download on the App Store for iPhone and iPad, and Mac as well as on Google Play for Android. It’s a very fun game, I gave it a try yesterday and it’s surprisingly challenging.

Google Play hits 25 billion app downloads, holds celebratory yard sale with $0.25 games

Google Play hits 25 billion app downloads, offers select 25-cent titles this week

Google Play crossed a rather significant milestone this morning: something to the tune of 25 billion app downloads. While the accomplishment is weighty enough on its own — especially given that the store also offers books, music and movies, which aren’t included in this tally — Google is celebrating in symbolic style with a number of apps and games for sale at just $0.25 over the next five days. Among the mix of discounted titles, you’ll find publishers such as Gameloft, Electronic Arts, Rovio, Runtastic and Full Fat. Not to stop there, shoppers will also discover a curated collection of 25 must-own movies, 25 banned books, 25 albums that changed the world and 25 top-selling magazines.

With today’s announcement, it was revealed that 675,000 apps and games now live in Google Play — a healthy increase when compared to 600,000 titles and 20 billion installs just three months ago. As you might expect, Apple still claims the largest selection with 700,000 titles in its App Store, although with such a thin separation between the two, we may see Google Play eclipse its rival in short order.

iPhone sales could top 50 million in Q4

We aren’t sure if analysts love or hate predicting sales of Apple’s extremely popular devices, but the iPhone always gets its fair share of predictions. While some suggested 8-10 million iPhone 5 smartphones would be sold in September, opening weekend only saw about 5 million total. Now we’re seeing predictions for all iPhone models topping 50 million in the fourth quarter of 2012 alone.

While recent analysts have been blaming shortages for their numbers being off, today J.P. Morgan analyst Katy Huberty is giving Apple some rather impressive predictions. Stating they’ll have an awesome end of year tallying up around 50 million iPhone sales for the fourth quarter. The same analyst is stating around 25m for Q3, and essentially doubling that number for next quarter.

With the iPhone 5 offering a bigger screen, 4G LTE, and getting a much wider launch than previous years it’s easy to see why she finds Q4 doing so well. Katy Huberty even goes as far as to state 200 million in sales for 2013. That is a pretty bold prediction, and something we’re sure Apple would love to see.

China will be a major factor and contributor to those sales numbers in Q4 and next year, offering the new device on multiple new carriers throughout the country. Overall Huberty expects that the larger display and addition of those blazing fast 4G LTE speeds will boost the iPhone to massive numbers for the rest of the year and beyond. In case you missed it, feel free to take a peek at our iPhone 5 review!

iPhone 5 sales hit 5 million in first weekend

So, how’s that new iPhone doing? Not too shabby — looks like Apple’s moved more than 5 million in three days, according to a press release the company just dropped. Cupertino is also reporting that iOS 6 has been installed on more than 100 million devices since the operating system was unleashed on the world. At present, the iPhone is available in the US, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and Australia, with 22 more countries being added to the list before the end of the week. By the end of the year, the number is expected to top 100. Check out the obligatory back-patting by Tim Cook and pals in the presser after the break.

Amazon’s Kindle readers and tablets booted from Walmart shelves

The online retail giant Amazon has a huge audience for selling their tablets and Kindle eReaders on the web, but when you don’t have a storefront you’ll take all the help you can get. In terms of brick and mortar stores there’s only a handful of opportunities for Amazon’s new Kindle Fire HD tablet — and today they’re losing a big one.

Today reports are claiming that an even bigger retail giant, Wal-Mart Inc will no longer support or sell any of Amazon’s line of Kindle Fire tablets or eReaders. This is a huge blow considering earlier this year Target removed them from their shelves too.

This marks the second major chain to stop offering Amazon’s products, and you have to wonder why. Are they feeling threatened that Amazon offers so many of the same things they do online, and don’t want to help the competition? This is what good old Wally-World had to say late last night in a memo to store management nationwide:

We have recently made the business decision to not carry Amazon tablets and eReaders beyond our existing inventory and purchase commitments,” “This includes all Amazon Kindle models current and recently announced.”

Obviously Walmart is one of the largest chains across America, but according to Reuters while they lead the charge in sales, their online sales are quite poor and are getting beat out by many — including Amazon. A Walmart spokeswoman said they’ll continue to sell “a broad assortment” of eReaders and tablets in the future. We can’t help but wonder if this is just to cut the helping hand they’ve been giving the competition, or if Walmart is looking to get into hardware themselves. Best Buy has Dynex and Insignia, could Walmart be preparing something of their own too?

AT&T says iPhone 5 is ‘fastest selling’ model ever, neglects to mention actual numbers (update)

AT&T breaks sales records for the iPhone 5, neglects to mention actual numbers

You may be waiting on review time to figure out whether the iPhone 5 really is all that, but AT&T has already been swayed. It claims that preorders over the past few days have outpaced all previous models, making this the “fastest-selling iPhone the company has ever offered.” What the short announcement below doesn’t reveal, however, is absolute sales numbers — but those should start to come around soon enough.

Update: Soon was right.
