Wii U Sold Fewer Units in 2013 than PS4 and Xbox One Sold in Two Months

Nintendo continues its downward spiral as it’s game console the Wii U remains unpopular and its profits slump. During the company’s latest earnings call, it became clear just how poorly the Wii U is selling. According to the call, Nintendo sold only 5.86 million units since the Wii U launched.

That represents an incremental 2.8 million units compared to the number sold as of the end of 2012. 2.8 millions sounds like a lot of units – until you consider Sony sold more PS4 consoles in a couple of months than Nintendo sold Wii Us over the course of an entire year.

Microsoft also sold more Xbox One consoles in the same period, with over 3 million consoles sold since launch. A bright spot for Nintendo continues to be the 3DS, which sold a substantial 12.9 million units last year, though smartphone and tablet sales have got the be eating into their handheld market share too. Hopefully, the Big N will find its way back to its former glory in the not-too-distant future.

We're Buying More PC Games Than We Can Play

As another Steam Holiday Sale comes to a close, I have spent roughly $100 to purchase 22 games. In the past 2 months I have picked up 3 Humble Bundles. Not a month ago I spent around $50 on 11 games in the Steam Fall Sale. By the time the next Steam Holiday Sale rolls into town I will be lucky if I have played half of these games. I have a problem. I am a Compulsive Collector. And after 1,400 gamers took my recent survey on their game-buying habits, I know that I am not alone.

Samsung boasts 800,000 Galaxy Gear smartwatch sales in two months

In an attempt to end speculation surrounding the popularity of its Galaxy Gear, Samsung has shared its smartwatch sales figures for the first time, and they might surprise you. Reuters reports that the company’s Android-powered wearable has sold 800,000 units since its launch in September, surpassing its own expectations and setting straight recent reports that pegged worldwide South Korean sales at 50,000 units.

To stimulate sales, Samsung has offered plenty of incentives to buy the Galaxy Gear by bundling it with the Galaxy Note 3, with some UK carriers offering the smartwatch for free if they purchased the 5.7-inch smartphone on a two-year contract. Samsung believes the Gear is now the “most sold wearable watch available in the marketplace,” which, if true, would put it ahead of efforts from Pebble and Sony. As the holidays approach, the company says it will offer more Galaxy Gear promotions as it builds out future support for more of its smartphones, adding to its recent software update that brought all of your notifications to the device.

Update: The Verge reports that while Reuters is noting consumer sales, Korean publication Yonhap believes Samsung may actually be reporting shipments to retailers. The same report also suggested Samsung’s 50,000 “worldwide” Gear sales were in South Korea only.

Sony sells over 1 million PlayStation 4 consoles in first 24 hours

PlayStation 4 and DualShock 4

There was little doubt that the PlayStation 4 would sell well on launch given the sheer amount of hype, but we now have proof: Sony has revealed that it sold over one million PS4s in North America during the console’s first 24 hours of availability. While that figure pales in comparison to the sales numbers we see for smartphones, it gets the company a long way toward its goal of moving five million units before the end of its fiscal year in March. It also suggests that Sony won’t face the same lackluster response that greeted Nintendo, which took a week to sell its first 400,000 Wii U systems in the US. The real question is whether or not the PS4 will preserve its sales momentum — with the Xbox One launch just five days away, Sony won’t keep the high end of the console market to itself for much longer.
