Earlier this year we wrote up a review of Solipskier on the iPhone and iPad, and followed that up with some detailed sales stats the developers provided. If you haven’t grabbed the game yet now is the perfect time because it has joined up with five other independent game developers to put their games on sale for just $0.99 each, and that’s not all. They will also be donating 1/3rd of all the sales (after Apple’s cut) to Child’s Play Charity.

What games are included in this sale? Here’s the list along with a brief description for each:

  • CANABALT (iTunes Link – Universal iPad/iPhone Game) – Outrun the destruction of your city with just a tap of your finger! The genre-defining, one-button parkour phenomenon is on sale for the first time ever, and runs great on your iPad too.
  • SOLIPSKIER (iTunes Link – Universal iPad/iPhone Game) – Solipskier is a fast paced skiing game where you draw the slopes to pick up speed and do jumps. Paint your own cliffs, do tricks and slalom through gates to get huge scores!
  • SPIDER (iTunes Link – iPhone Game) – You are a spider. Search for clues as you adventure from room to room on the hunt for your next meal. Build webs of your own design: in the corners, under the furniture, and in the forgotten places too small for humans.
  • OSMOS (iTunes Link – iPhone Game) – This award-winning PC game has been fully redesigned for the iPhone, featuring fluid multitouch controls, lush, flowing visuals, and an atmospheric electronic soundtrack.
  • ELISS (iTunes Link – iPhone Game) – Your job is to keep up harmony in an odd universe made of blendable planets. Touch-control multiple planets at once, join them together into giant orbs or split them up into countless dwarf planets, and match their size with the squeesars.
  • DROP7 (iTunes Link – Universal iPad/iPhone App) – Tetris meets Sudoku in this original, addictive puzzle game. One of Time Magazine’s Top 10 iPhone Games, Esquire’s Best Downloadable Games Ever, and Edge Magazine’s #2 Best iPhone Game of All Time.

There is also a freebie page set up that includes some wallpapers they’ve designed for your iPad and iPhone. You’ve got until December 31st to get your hands on these discounted games, and if you’re on the edge about purchasing them you should keep in mind that both Canabalt and Solipskier had never been put on sale previously.

Xbox 360 sales reach dismal low, still the best-selling console in the US

The Xbox 360 is on its last legs before the Xbox One officially launches in November to take over the throne, but Microsoft’s current gaming console is still the best-selling console in the US right now, claiming 31 straight months of being on the top of best-selling list, surpassing the PlayStation 3 and the Nintendo […]

Lenovo posts Q1 earnings, reveals that its mobile sales have overtaken PCs

Lenovo says it's raining cash

Don’t look now, but Lenovo just became an industry bellwether. While reporting strong first quarter results that include a record $8.8 billion in revenue and $170 million in profit, the tech giant revealed that its combined smartphone and tablet sales have overtaken those of its PCs. Yes, you read that correctly — the world’s largest PC vendor is now a mobile-first company, unlike previous title holders such as HP. It’s not hard to explain the shift, however. About 42 percent of Lenovo’s total sales come from its native China, where the company’s predominantly Android-based phones and tablets fare very well. The firm’s Windows PCs and tablets are also performing above industry averages, but CEO Yang Yuanqing makes it clear that Lenovo is quickly becoming a “PC Plus” brand — IdeaPads and ThinkPads are just parts of a larger puzzle.

Nintendo Sells Over 268M Consoles, 385M Handhelds In 30 Years

Nintendo Sells Over 268M Consoles, 385M Handhelds In 30 Years

Nintendo’s Wii U may not be selling as well as hotcakes, but sales of its 3DS continue to soar which has sparked the company to remind its critics just how well the company has been doing over the years in terms of sales.

Nintendo published a report today where they share just how well their console sales have been ever since the launch of the Famicon in 1983. Since then, Nintendo has sold a total of 268.97 million consoles and 385.15 million handheld units. These numbers include every SKU for all of Nintendo’s consoles, which include the NES, Super NES, Nintendo 64, GameCube, Wii and Wii U as well as its handhelds Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS.

In addition to its lifetime of console and handheld sales, Nintendo also says they have sold a total of 2.195 billion software units for its consoles and 1.907 billion for its handheld devices so far.

It’s interesting Nintendo chose now to detail just how many consoles, handhelds and software units they’ve sold throughout the years considering how poorly its Wii U has been performing ever since its release. Maybe this reminder is exactly what critics and gamers need in order to believe in the Wii U’s future.

Nintendo gobbles up $4 million in a month with new 3DS StreetPass games (video)

Nintendo gobbles up $4 million in a month with new 3DS StreetPass games

Apparently a lot of people have followed the white rabbit hawking Nintendo’s new 3DS StreetPass games, because the four new titles have moved like gangbusters. Nintendo sold $4 million worth of Mii Force, Flower Town, Warrior’s Way and Monster Manor in a month (at $5 each or $15 for all four) to players champing at the bit for more games using the interactive feature. To the uninitiated, you can pick up StreetPasses just by crossing paths with another 3DS player or even someone who’s recently been in the same place through proxy passes. That lets you play games with their Miis (avatars), but until recently there were only a couple of preloaded titles that use the functionality. There must have been some pent-up demand, though, considering the sales numbers — after all, the 3DS has been Nintendo’s bread and butter lately. As a reminder about how it all works, check the video after the break.

Microsoft filing shows just $853 million in Surface revenue following $900 million RT inventory charge

Microsoft filing shows just $853 million in Surface revenue following $900 million RT inventory charge

Ballmer and Co. have been tight lipped when it comes to Surface sales figures, but they’ve just opened up a little to Uncle Sam. An SEC filing reveals that the first-party tablet raked in a total of $853 million in revenue between its debut and June 30th, the end of the firm’s fiscal year. To put that in perspective, the cash Microsoft managed to rake in is eclipsed by a $900 million hit it took through Surface RT inventory adjustments. To make matters worse, the company spent more on advertising for Windows 8 and Surface ($898 million), than its tablet brought in. Though details on how many slates have shipped or sold are still MIA, price drops make us suspect that those numbers are still too modest for Redmond’s taste.

Tablets sales to outnumber PCs by the end of the year

Google’s head of Android and Chrome Sundar Pichai is on stage at the company’s Breakfast event where they’re planned to unveil some new products dealing with both Android and Chrome. But before that, Pichai is talking about some figures and numbers that are pretty Earth-shattering, especially when talking about tablets and PCs.

    20130724_060745-L

According to the IDC, Tablets will outnumber PCs by the end of this year. Pichai showed a chart on stage that shows a relatively slow-moving upward trend for both consumer and corporate PCs, but the growth of tablets has an incredible exponential growth, and in just a few months, it’s predicted that tablet sales will outperform PC sales.

    zsh6

Pichai says that by the end of 2013, 225 million tablets will have been sold, leading to more tablets being sold than PCs. As for total Android tablet activations, the end of 2012 saw almost 40 million activations, but that number is over 70 million. He also notes that almost one in two tablets sold worldwide is based on Android, with the rest being iPads.

Of course, this news isn’t too surprising, seeing as how we’re entering a post-PC world. PCs will still exist, but smartphones and tablets seem to be overtaking the market and are selling more than computers. 225 million is a lot of tablets to go around, and that number is expected to keep rising.

iPod sales down 31% from last year, gets no mention from Apple

We’ve heard a lot of numbers from Apple today, including record iPhone sales for the third quarter, as well as iPad and Mac sales that were slightly down, but still better than expected by the company. However, what didn’t get mentioned at all in the press release or the earnings call was how well the iPod is doing.

    25337395_kwvshq-4-580x326

In the simplest of terms, the iPod isn’t doing well at all. In fact, revenue for the iPod business dropped a staggering 31% year-over-year, and the number of units sold dropped 32%. This is the biggest hit that the iPod has ever taken in an earnings report within the last few years. The second-biggest hit that the iPod took was Q4 2011 when iPod sales were down 27% from the previous year.

Of course, this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, as we’ve known for awhile that the iPod has been on a slow downward trend, even with the iPod touch still getting a lot of love from Apple as the phone-less iPhone device for those who want a portable multimedia player without the communication radios.

Apple didn’t provide specifics as far as sales figures for each individual iPod device, but we’re guessing the iPod touch is up there as the best-selling iPod, while the Nano and Shuffle might be up there as well, but the iPod Classic is seeing its dying day, considering that Apple hasn’t touched it in a couple years, and hasn’t bothered updating it in a while.

This all goes to show that Apple is cannibalizing their own products, but that’s not a bad thing at all. It’s merely the circle of life and the progression of technology. iPods and music players were all the craze in the early 2000s, but it’s the smartphone that’s taking over now, and Apple is more than happy to follow along that route.

Xbox 360 sales remain steady, is still best-selling console

The next-generation console war isn’t at full steam yet, but the summer has seen some fierce battling going on already between the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. However, the Xbox 360 is still selling despite the anticipation of the next-generation. Microsoft revealed that they sold 140,000 Xbox 360 consoles during the month of June, which was enough to top the list of the best-selling consoles for 30 straight months.

    xbox-360-controller-580x385

The 30-month mark is quite impressive, and it means that the Xbox 360 has been the best-selling console for 2.5 years without Sony or Nintendo getting in the way. Even Nintendo’s launch of the Wii U wasn’t enough to dethrone Microsoft’s console, which goes to show that the Xbox 360 can outperform next-gen consoles, or the Wii U just had poor sales. Maybe a little of both?

As for the total amount spent on Xbox 360 hardware, games, and accessories during the month of June, Xbox 360 gamers spent a collective $197 million, which is the most of any console for that month. The Xbox 360 also held seven of the top 10 console games for June including Minecraft, NBA 2K13, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Grand Theft Auto IV, and Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

    xbox-360-games

It’s hard to believe that the Xbox 360 is almost eight years old, being introduced back in November of 2005. The Xbox One is also planned for a November release, as is the PlayStation 4. Xbox Live boss Larry Hyrb revealed yesterday that Xbox One pre-orders have surpassed pre-orders of the Xbox 360 during the same time period, which means that the new console may do better than the Xbox 360 did.

The Xbox One was unveiled back in May and was also further detailed at E3 last month. Microsoft will be at Gamescom in August to announce even more details on the new console before its release in November. The console has already received a bit of backlash, but Microsoft has since backtracked on plans for an always-on internet connection and heavy DRM restriction.
