While I’d personally love to have a full-size Aliens Power Loader exoskeleton suit, I don’t think I have enough room to store it in my garage. This little LEGO model is the next best thing, and you can win one, thanks to our friends at Ichiban Toys, and our new website, MightyMega.
This 146 piece LEGO model is based on the Caterpillar P-5000 Powered Work Loader, and features posable arms and claws, along with many other details which help make it an accurate representation of the one seen piloted by Ripley in Aliens. While all of the components are official LEGO parts, many of them are rare and difficult to find. The completed model measures about 4.5 inches-tall, and will look great sitting on your shelf alongside an Alien Queen action figure. It even comes with the little Ripley action figure shown in the image.
You can find more pictures of the Aliens Power Loader model over on MightyMega, and you can enter the contest below:
We’re no stranger to Matt Armstrong aka Monsterbrick’sbrick–snappingprowess. Some of his newest creations are for the upcoming LEGO Star Wars Days that will be held at LEGOLAND California from June 15-16, 2013. Matt made these astromechs using the instructions on the official LEGO R2-D2 kit and parts from his own LEGO collection.
Matt calls this rainbow-colored astromech RU-KRAZY (the droid’s answer is yes, by the way). The black one is called the Death Star Droid R2-Pi while the pink, purple and beige mech is called R2-QT-Pi. Awwww.
Even if you can’t make it to LEGOLAND, you can still view Matt’s mechs up close on his Flickr page.
Do you normally just throw wedding invitations out as you laugh and call the bride and groom suckers? Well, you wouldn’t throw these wedding invitations away. After all, they come with starships. Who’s the sucker now?
There’s probably no better day for Star Wars fans to get married than May the 4th. It was the perfect day for Homer Liwag. You probably remember the Indiana Jones engagement ring and the Star Wars wedding band he created. So of course, for his own wedding, he created some amazing invitations.
Each invitation comes in a little black box that holds a miniature Star Wars ship attached to an invitation that initially read only “Take Off.” Once the recipient took off the lid, the full invitation and a tiny spaceship was revealed. Now, that is classy.
I don’t know about you, but I am sick of Earth being the target of every nasty alien race. Whether it’s Space Invaders, Predators or Daleks, they need to find another planet to mess with. At least the Daleks stick to London for the most part. Despite our planet having a target on it, I can’t help but love this cool Dalek Pest Extermination t-shirt, designed by Tom Trager.
It’s perfect. If you hate bow-ties and are sick of Time Lords regenerating everytime you try to kill them, maybe you can hire these Daleks. Hate the Doctor? Get 20% off!
I always figured the Daleks were exterminators by trade. I mean they say it all the time. But who knew they had such a booming business?
It has been over 45 years since the original Star Trek graced TV screens, but somehow this 1:1 scale Galileo shuttlecraft prop from the original Star Trek has survived, though it shows it’s age.
Last year, the shuttlecraft sold at auction and the new owners, Adam Schneider and Alec Peters, took the prop to New Jersey boat restorers Master Shipwrights, and asked them to restore the old bird. Space.com recently interviewed the team about the restoration, and here are a few highlights of the conversation…
It’s probably taken 2,000 man hours of work. It’s a world-class restoration at a world-class shop. This is not me because I have no skills as an amateur doing work. This is a fabulous facility…Not only is it going to be cosmetically good, but from a structural point of view, from a quality of finish point of view, from a quality of wood point of view, and from an ability to move it safely without damaging it. It has never been in better shape.
There’s no word yet on where the Galileo will eventually land, but its owners hope to put it on display for countless Trekkies to enjoy. It is awesome to see people restoring a piece of sci-fi history out of love for the series. Captain Kirk would be so proud.
Watching this video of this guy making his own model of the Starship Enterprise D – then making it fly – is truly inspirational. It is a fully functional R/C model. It’s even illuminated by super bright LEDs and fiber optics. Honestly, I was in geek heaven watching this.
YouTuber TheMiro59 built this functional model of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D last year. It doesn’t fly perfectly, but it does fly. The video takes you through the build process and all of the test flights. The first flight is kind of funny as it nose dives into a net like it had been caught in a Tholian web – though after a while, he does get the hang of flying the decidedly less than aerodynamic starship.
Still, all I can say is this guy did an awesome job. The man believed it and lived the dream. Now somebody needs to start mass-producing these so we can all own one.
It’s finally time to get a good look at the film adaptation of the science fiction novel classic Ender’s Game with the first official full-length trailer for the movie. This trailer is just under two minutes long and has Harrison Ford speaking in what might be the least intense declaration of intent in the history of on-film representations of the military, rivaled only by his admittedly unenthusiastic voice-over for the theater version of Blade Runner. That said, the visuals appear to be bringing a fully prepared vision from director Gavin Hood and producer Bob Orci.
This clip is joined by a Google Hangout that’s taking place starting at 1pm PDT / 4pm EDT and going forward into the afternoon. This Google+ Hangout holds the heads of the film, Hood and Orci, speaking to select members of the public as well as the star of the film Asa Butterfield. This actor portrays Ender in the film which will be released on the 1st of November this year.
Ender’s Game has also seen the start of a viral campaign that will be ushering in information about the plot and the environment which will hold the characters of this science fiction story. This story takes place in the future, a future where a single alien invasion has set our Earth on high alert, allowing a single government system to keep sway over the citizens of our planet while they train children to become future military leaders. These children – Ender included – are part of a future era of humanity in which kids have the potential to become genius-level thinkers in their adolescence.
The film stars Asa Butterfield, Harrison Ford, and Sir Ben Kingsley amongst many new entrants into the major motion picture world. This film is the first official adaptation of the Orson Scott Card novel Ender’s Game, a book which was born of a short science fiction tale told in the pages of Analog Science Fiction and Fact.
Have a peek at SlashGear’s brief timeline of events that’ve recently lead up to this release and be prepared for a flow of information the likes of which we’ve not seen since Prometheus.
Today is the day the Ender’s Game movie gets its first full-length trailer. But before it’s released, the company behind the production is pushing a full-breadth viral data campaign to support it. Much in the same way Prometheus was supported by the virtual presence of the company Weyland Industries, here Ender’s Game is heralded by the International Fleet. This government group plays a major part in the Ender’s Game story, and here appears with propaganda aplenty for those anticipating the film.
The International Fleet Sentinel is a faux-publication being shown through the micro-blogging website Tumblr. There you’ll find a series of five portals that bring information about the story through blurbs written from the perspective of the space army that is the International Fleet and the world government, graphics included. The first of these is a Mission Statement.
Series: Mission Statement of the International Fleet
It’s here that the International Fleet lets Earth know that it remains at the center of the “single, harmonious government” preparing for a potential second global invasion by aliens that were defeated by Mazer Rackham in the distant past. Readers of the book know that this posturing is done for more than just the benefit of the citizens of the Earth’s confidence in their leadership.
“Lucky for us, every human being has preparation on their mind,” reports I.F. Major Gerald Stacks, special negotiations envoy to the nations of Earth. “The leadership of humanity must prioritize interstellar readiness and, to support that, total global cohesion.”
This theme seems to be getting pushed harder than it is in the original book. Perhaps we’ll see more of a “big government crush” than we do in the original storyline. And hopefully more of Peter and Valentine.
Next Leader Recruitment
The application process for Battle School is not that unlike joining the Navy here in the present, only it’s not the recruit that signs away their future, it’s their parents. Gifted children are what Battle School will be pushing through to end up in I.F. Tactical and the Strategic Training Academy.
“There is no greater pride for parents than to see their children achieve greatness, and there is no greater achievement than to protect the survival of our race. The I.F. Tactical and Strategic Training Academies are training tomorrow’s brightest leaders and greatest public servants. Our world needs heroes. Your children are our brightest hope.
These exclusive academies provide a safe place for gifted children to refine their focus and learn the necessary skills to lead our planet in the impending intergalactic war. Prepare our world for the future and prepare your child for greatness today.
Does your child have what it takes? Could your child be the next Mazer Rackham? Apply to the I.F. through your local recruiting office to discuss your child’s government sponsored education.”
Of course these kids wont remain children as such for long. As the story tells us and as we can expect from the film, Battle School gives no mercy to the future battle-hardened members of the military, not for size, not for ability, not at any level. Through this mercilessness, Ender will become more powerful than the coddled child he was on Earth.
Here you’ll see the first teaser for the film, a seconds-long set of mini-clips also making way for the first full-length trailer coming up later today.
Developing a Strategic Mind
Here you’ll find information about the Battle School, where Ender and other future geniuses are sent to develop and become great leaders. It’s not in every plotline that a group of children are given such regard. Here though, the IF has recognized the power of the children of this future generation and will be making full use of it.
Looking Back at the Great Invasion
Setting the viewer up for an understanding of why everyone is so flustered about aliens in the movie, this bit tells of the former great leader of the military in Mazer Rackham. This fellow is, in the story, a major hero and one looked up to as history’s most prominent savior of the human race. The victory he commanded allowed the “Great Invasion” to be stopped and preparations to begin for the next wave of alien opponents.
Thirds
A plot element used in the Ender’s Game story used to single out Ender and prepare him to be a major military leader for the future of the human race. This Thirds announcement lets the world know that though overpopulation has regulated society at large to have only two children per couple of parents lest a special exception be made. Ender is, of course, part of a very special situation, as we’ll find throughout the story.
As it was with the Acer Enterprise-esque spot that turned out to be a rather strange Windows 8 computer by the name of Aspire R7 last month, so too do the stars of Star Trek appear this week in a video spot for Audi. In their newest crossover appearance, both original Spock and new-age Spock have a bit of a battle on the road, complete with so many Star Trek references your head will spin. This spot is also home to a driverless / self-driven Audi vehicle in addition to the Audi S7, as driven by Zachary Quinto.
What the audience will find in this push for the film is an advertisement for an Audi vehicle stocked with infotainment system, light-up bits and pieces, and a presentation that makes Leonard Nimoy’s ride look like a bit of a joke. Of course that’s the point, as the new age – with Quinto, aka Spock from the newest series of Star Trek movies – makes way as the old – Leonard Nimoy, stays cool.
You’ll find Nimoy making reference after reference not just to Star Trek in more form than one, but to his own professional (read: odd) past as well. For an extended period of his vehicle trip in this video he sings a new rendition of the classic “The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins”, a song which he sang for a variety show in 1967 by he name of Malibu U. Because we live in an age where all things digital can be preserved, you’ll be treated to this epic masterpiece as well, right this minute.
Please mind the 60′s pixie women, if you can. Zachary Quinto meanwhile stays par for the course, ready to appear as Spock for the film Star Trek Into Darkness later this month – on the 17th of May, mind you. It’s also rumored that Quinto will be returning to the most terrifying television show of all for another season soon: American Horror Story. Can’t be too silly for that one.
We’ve seen some Dead Space Plasma Cutters before – even some with real lasers, but hey, lasers are always cool, so check this one out and be very impressed. The craftmanship and attention to detail here is simply stunning.
It was made by Patrick Priebe of Laser Gadgets. This weapon can actually do some serious damage, which is great if you find yourself on a derelict spaceship full of killer aliens.
Just like the video game gun it can go from vertical to horizontal and back again and as shown in the video, it can burn things of course. It’s powered by three bright 30mW green lasers for aiming, and a 1.5W blue laser for burning stuff. While Patrick doesn’t offer plans or a build guide for his Plasma Cutter, he will build and sell you one if you have enough money.
