TipTop Service Finds You the Best of NYC

I think people who live in New York City are extremely lucky, because there are so many developers out there who are setting up all sorts of apps and services targeted especially for them. One of the latest of these is TipTop.

TipTopmagnify

It’s described as “a simple way to find the best of NYC.” It’s essentially a search service for those living in the area, but with a twist: it only displays results of the purported “best” of whatever it is you’re looking for.

Be it the best burger, the best pizza, or the best haircut even, just fill out the fields on the TipTop NYC site and click on the magnifying glass icon to start your search. And the bests aren’t just picked by critics – they’re ranked by the community’s votes.

The service was built and recently launched by Betaworks. Let’s hope they add the rest of the major cities in the great US of A to their database soon.

Google Search for Android gets Now cards for notable people, new voice search hotword

Google Search for Android updates rolling out with new hotword, Now cards for notable people

Google showed off its refreshed search experience last week, and now we’re starting to see it on our Android devices. As is usual, with its staggered updates different people may see the features at different times, but the changelog just got an update today. In case you missed it, one tweak Android Police first noticed last week is that the hotword for voice search has changed to “Ok Google,” similar to the “Ok Glass” command for the company’s headset. The new “more beautiful” search results are rolling out gradually according to the notes, so you may not see those right away. Finally, you can add “notable people” (we haven’t seen our own names listed, clearly that’s just an omission) to the list of items Google Now will keep you updated on, via a button on their card when you search for them as seen above. If you’ve been living with the new experience already, let us know how you like it, others should just keep an eye on their devices as it slowly rolls out.

Bing partners with Pinterest to add image collections to search results

DNP Bing partners with Pinterest to add image collections to search results

It’s no secret that Bing has been waging an uphill battle to stay relevant, and now, Microsoft is hoping that its partnership with Pinterest will be enough to win you over. The Bing team’s latest effort combines its own search results with a new feature: image collections, a supplement that presents related Pinterest boards to the right of your main results. For example, an image search for “Pink cupcakes” will pull up a list of boards relevant to your interests. Clicking on one of them — we opted for “Pretty in pink cupcakes” — will take you to a new page that collects the user’s pinned images along with a direct link to the board on Pinterest. The new feature is designed to introduce a social element to Bing by uniting collections curated by living, breathing humans with the search engine’s algorithms. We don’t know if it’ll be enough to convince people to “Bing it” next time they’re on the hunt for images, but we do know that we’re now in desperate need of cupcakes.

Facebook Graph Search boost adds statuses, posts & more

Facebook has updated its Graph Search feature to now include both posts and status updates, expanding the usefulness of the socially-enabled search engine as it digs through more online content. Revealed back in January, and rolled out across the US in July, Graph Search had until now only handled people, places, interests, and photos. That […]

Facebook expands Graph Search to include status updates and posts

DNP Facebook expands Graph Search to include status updates and posts

Today, Facebook is giving Graph Search something of a power-up by adding status updates and posts to the list of content it can access. Previously, the revamped search engine could only scan four types of information — people, photos, places and interests — when presented with queries like “who are my friends in New York City?” Now, if someone types in “posts about bacon from the last month,” your recent public complaint about the wilted lettuce in your B.L.T. will pop up. Also included in the expansion are check-ins, comments and photo captions. As it has at every step of the Graph Search rollout, Facebook is quick to assure its users that the feature respects your privacy settings, so only content that’s been shared with you or is otherwise publicly accessible will show up in search results. For more information, head on over to the source link below.

Google gives search a new engine and card UI for mobile, reveals new iOS search app

Google gives search a new engine and card UI for mobile, reveals new iOS search app

Google’s feeling a bit nostalgic lately: in fact, today is the company’s 15th anniversary. However, its look at the past is a fleeting thing, and Big G is very much focused on the future. To that end, Senior VP of Search, Amit Singhal just revealed a host of new features for search. First up, tablet and mobile users will be seeing a new card-based UI that’s been making its way across all of Google’s services, and has defined the look of Google Now since its inception. In addition to providing a consistent brand appearance, the new look arrives in tandem with an improvement to the Knowledge Graph that delivers an easier way for folks to drill down on answers to their queries. For example, when searching for a particular band, a card will pop up at the top with a list of songs that you can scroll from side to side. In another example, search answered a comparison query with an expandable, columned chart card that displayed pertinent info about the two things asked to be compared. Plus, you’ll be able to see other cards with web and other results at the same time, instead of needing to navigate between pages to see all the results.

In keeping with the updated aesthetics on Android, Google’s also rolling out a new-look version of its iOS search app. The new app version will put users directly in a Google Now interface that’ll feel familiar to Android users, and brings notifications, reminders and hotwording to Apple-philes. Furthermore, the search app is now cross-platform, so if you add a reminder in iOS, it’ll show up on Android and vice-versa. %Gallery-slideshow98635%
