So you’re in the mood for playing games from 9 different consoles from the past couple of decades, but you want to do it all on one device – you’re in luck. There’s a device with just that set of features aimed at appearing on the 10th of December, and it goes by the name […]
We love what the Hyperkin Retron 5 brings to the table, namely compatibility with ten classic gaming system cartridges: NES, Famicom, Super NES and Famicom, Sega Master System, Genesis and Mega Drive, and Game Boy original, Color and Advance. The problem is, Hyperkin’s played coy about it’s price and availability… until now. It’ll be available on December 10th, and it’ll be on sale in both Europe (for €89.99) and in the US ($99.99). And, it turns out that the Retron 5 that’ll go on sale will have a few more tricks up its sleeve than the prototype we played with back at E3. The exterior’s been modified to better cool the internal components, and it’ll pack a Sega Power Base Converter that lets you play Sega’s Master System games. So, now you can officially start carving out space in your entertainment center for the Retron 5 — which shouldn’t be difficult once you’ve cleared out all the elder consoles it replaces. Less is more, people.
We have heard news reports of Sega placing a bid on Index Holdings, and just in case you were wondering what Index Holdings is all about, they happen to be the parent company of Atlus. Apart from that, Japanese media company Nikkei has also dropped a report that Sega will pick up Atlus for a cool 14 billion yen, and the entire deal is set to be concluded, hook, line and sinker, later this November. That would mean a few more months in between for the folks over at Atlus to remain just that – an Atlus family, without being gobbled over. We do wonder whether any heads will roll or not with this particular acquisition by Sega, or will the status quo between the companies remain the same?
We do look forward to see what kind of games can Sega come up with after acquiring Atlus later this year, and will it augment Sega’s position in the gaming industry, or will things more or less remain where they are other than a change in the owner’s name? Only time will tell, and this is where the patience card will need to be played yet again. Do you think that the acquisition of Atlus by Sega was a strategic move in the latter’s favor?

When the Nintendo Wii was first released to the masses, many people laughed at what they called “waggle controls”, and I do admit that it was rather weird at that point in time to play with a nunchuk and a Wiimote. However, once you have gotten the hang of it, it all becomes really natural, and you could also see Sony backtracking and throwing in a half-hearted motion control system into their Sixaxis controllers. Microsoft, however, decided to take a very different route by turning your entire body into the controller itself, calling this the Kinect system that experienced various degrees of success. Come this fall, Sega has plans to roll out their first iPad game which will use the player’s body as a motion controller, which would make it not too different from current hardware based console games.
This is made possible thanks to Extreme Reality’s technology, and this particular title will hold the distinction of being the “first full-body motion controlled game on an iPad”, relying on the built-in camera within the iPad without the need for extra accessories or additional sensors. We hope to get a whiff of what this particular title from Sega would be sometime down the road, and the sooner, the better.

Emulator Cabinet Works with 75 Controllers, 30+ Consoles and 2 Happy Players
Posted in: Today's ChiliThese days you can run dozens of classic games on a PC using emulators. If you’re good with modding hardware, you may be able to connect the right controller for the console you’re emulating. But if you’re Patrice Daubaire, you take it one step further. Patrice hacked 75 controllers to make them compatible with over 110 gaming systems.
Patrice calls his ingenious mod the Multi Video Game System 2 or MVGS 2. He managed to universalize 75 controllers – from an Atari 2600 joystick to aPlayStation controller – so that they’ll work with different gaming systems via a custom VGA adapter. Patrice claims his system has zero input lag and that the controllers weigh more or less the same as unmodified ones. Patrice was also able to add additional functions like a quick save button on some of the controllers.
To present his invention, Patrice built the MVGS 2 Dream Station, a PC with over 30 gaming system emulators. It has a nice cabinet with a built-in monitor and lets up to two players geek out. He also setup a rotating display stand for the controllers.
Pick your jaw up from the floor and head to the MVGS 2 website for more information.

Check out this incredible piece of geekery I just found over on Etsy. This LEGO mosaic is loaded with so many classic Nintendo, Sega and arcade characters, I think my head might just explode. I dare you to try and identify them all.
It was made from a whopping 10,511 individual LEGO pieces, each affixed to a large grey LEGO baseplate. Since each baseplate measures 15″ x 15″ and there are 15 baseplates, that means this thing measures 75″ x 45″. Wow. That’s almost 24 square feet of gaming awesomeness.

I can’t believe that the artist who created this simply posted it under an Etsy shop called “Mytemporaryshop.” How are we supposed to give him/her credit for this masterpiece? If it’s you, please step forward and be recognized as a god (or goddess) among geeks.
This one-of-a-kind work of art is available for appx. $4823 (USD) over on Etsy, and all profits from the sale of the piece will go to help fund its creator’s project to send her class to Africa next year.
Sonic will be back for what looks to be another great adventure on the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS in SEGA’s upcoming game, Sonic Lost World. The game was announced this past May with another trailer hinting at an October release date. During yesterday’s Nintendo Direct presentation, Nintendo announcing Sonic Lost World would be releasing on October 18 in Europe, while the U.S. will get the game on October 22. (more…)

Behold the evil Segacon “Gearhead” and his minions Supersonic and Knucklepunch. Baron Von Brunk created these awesome LEGO Transformers from scratch and they look amazing.
When not in robot mode, this guy transforms into a SEGA Game Gear handheld, and even has two Sonic games inside (Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic Blast).
Gearhead has battery blaster rockets attached to the shoulders and a shotgun cannon powered by Chaos Emeralds. He fully transforms without having to remove parts and converts back and forth easily.
The two minions are pretty awesome too. At first glance you might think that he used an actual Game Gear to make this, but these it’s all LEGO with some custom labels attached. Amazing work, Baron!
Do you remember growing up in the 1980s and the early 1990s? The Nintendo NES did take the world by storm, where it popularized the home videogame console genre, sending the Atari 2600 into the consumer electronics retirement home along the way. One thing about the NES was its library of games that definitely appealed to a wide range of gamers, and it opened up the imaginations of millions of kids, too. When the SNES arrived on the scene to succeed where the NES left off, Sega’s Genesis has delivered 16-bit gaming goodness for quite some time already, and with the $54.99 Genesis Arcade Ultimate Portable Console, you can roll back the years by enjoying 80 pre-loaded games right out of the box.
The Genesis Arcade Ultimate Portable Console comes with TV-Out capability, not to mention an internal battery that delivers anywhere from 4 to 6 hours of gameplay on a full charge. This means you can just tote around this little puppy without worrying about removing those mint looking carts from your video game collection at home. Some of the games include Altered Beast, the Golden Axe trilogy, and Sonic the Hedgehog I and II, just to mention a few. Games will be played off the SD memory card, and you can once again settle the score with your mate over a round of Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition or Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers.
