Amazon Introduces Mayday, A Unique And Amazingly Useful Live Tech Support System For Kindle

Screen Shot 2013-09-25 at 5.03.03 PM

Live support has always been a dream for major retailers. While chat solutions already exist, today Amazon announced a new support service available on Kindle HD products called Mayday. It is a single-click, hardware-support solution that lets users work with a remote tech support representative to solve problems with their tablets.

The service allows you to see the remote tech support person in a small window on your screen and also displays your screen on the support person’s computer where they can watch what you’re doing online, annotate the screen, and even tap through the interface. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said it’s like “actually very similar to having someone standing next to you” and offering tech support.

The service is unique to Amazon, and the company built a full infrastructure to support it at their HQ in Seattle and on board the hardware. By compressing the video signals, they are able to send more data to the devices from tech support and allow tech support to see the data remotely. Amazon’s goal is a 15-second response time, and they will ramp up staffing around major holidays when Kindles are flying fast and furious under the Easter tree.

While some may be concerned about privacy, rest assured the support person will not be able to see out of your camera, and you can mute your audio at any time. Bezos equated the experience to going into a store for tech support. “If you went to some physical store location to ask for help for your device, they’re going to see everything,” said Bezos. More important, however, is how many people the service will help.

“Are we in charge of our devices or our devices in charge of us? Getting good tech support isn’t easy, but it’s important,” he said.

The service will be available on the new Kindle Fire HDX tablets. You can read more about the service at Amazon’s Mayday page.

Nissan plans to make Leaf data available to app developers

Nissan plans to make Leaf data available to app developers

Those of you familiar with the Nissan Leaf will know about its Carwings system, which lets you check the vehicle’s charge, turn on the AC, rate your driving efficiency against others and even read RSS feeds out loud — all over an always-on cellular data connection. In fact, the RSS functionality raised some privacy concerns when it was discovered that Carwings embeds location and other data in the URL it sends to public servers (something that can thankfully be disabled by the owner). Nissan announced today that it plans to make telemetry data from the Leaf available to third-party developers for a fee — with the owner’s consent, of course. The company already uses telemetry data for vehicle maintenance and products like Carwings, but it hopes to broaden the ecosystem with apps. Examples include smart-grid integration (supplying power to a building for a reduced parking fee) and location-based services (real-time coupons as you drive by restaurants). It’ll be interesting to see if there’s enough interest from both developers and Leaf owners for Nissan to successfully monetize this idea.

Pay Women To Play Video Games With You In China

Pay Women To Play Video Games With You In China

We know how difficult it can be in order to find a woman who shares the same interests as you do, especially when it comes to your hardcore gaming habits that don’t involve dancing around in your underwear. That’s why you need to move to China where they offer a service to have women play games with you in a number of ways.

The gaming companion service in China comes in two different services. The first is a promotional service which has a game company offering the chance to play with a pretty lady. The second is a pay service where gamers can pay for a female to play online games with them. As you would expect, the service seems to be geared towards male gamers with its concept first coming about when a high-end World of Warcraft club offered online companion services.

Google updates Gmail with improved auto-complete predictions

Google has just updated its Gmail app to bring improved autocomplete predictions to the service. The update should be rolling out to all Gmail users worldwide, as well as Google Apps for Business users. Autocomplete predictions will now include contact thumbnails next to your contacts, as well as past search queries made within your Gmail account. The update is rolling out as we speak, and should be available to all Gmail users within the next few days.

The new update should also have improved autocomplete predictions based on who you email the most. It was only a matter of time before Google added these features to Gmail, seeing as its been included in its search engine, as well as several of its other services, for quite some time. The new autocomplete improvements are a much more welcomed addition than Gmail’s pop-out compose window.

Google also shelled out an update to its Gmail offline and mobile apps last month. The Gmail Offline and mobile web apps have been updated to look more like the iOS version of the Gmail app. Everything is much more clean and much more simple. The new mobile web app is available for most mobile devices, including the iPhone, Android, Kindle Fire, and Blackberry.

Google also added support for full-sized photo uploads to Google+ straight from your desktop. It rolled out an update to improve spell check for the Google Chrome browser, and just today, it updated its Chrome for Android app which now syncs autofill and password data from your computer to your Android device. Google has been on a roll with its updates, and we’ll most likely see some more very soon.
