Moving ‘for rent’ sign uses camera, motorized mount to track pedestrians (video)

Moving 'for rent' sign uses camera, motorized mount to track pedestrians video

Even in prime locations, vacant stores can go tenantless for months or years, costing landlords quite a bit in uncollected rent. One real estate owner in Sherbrooke, Quebec is hoping to move a property a bit more quickly, though, using a creative hack to attract attention to an otherwise ordinary “for rent” (à louer, in this case) sign. A standard red placard is mounted to a motorized horizontal track, with a camera keeping tabs on passersby. As pedestrians walk down the sidewalk, the sign slides to match their position. It’s a clever trick for sure, but with “many abandoned shop fronts” in the area, according to Niklas Roy, the project’s lead, it may be entertaining tourists for some time to come.

Points connected sign can show any place you need to go, what’s up online (video)

Points connected sign shows you where to go and what's up

Most street signs aren’t especially street-savvy when they can’t change with the passing weeks, let alone the moment. Breakfast NY’s new Points sign is much, much smarter. As long as it has an Ethernet or WiFi connection, it can spin its arrows toward locations on demand or as they become relevant, whether it’s the local bar at night or a concert stage in the afternoon. The signage is also aware of what’s happening, not just where: Points can tap into Foursquare, RSS feeds, Twitter and other sources to display trending hotspots, sports scores and other live updates. The curious can experiment with internet-connected demo signs today; Breakfast NY is taking rental requests now, with expectations that Points signs can deploy from July 1st onwards. As for pricing? You’ll have to get a quote. While the company tells us that a days-long rental will likely involve a lower five-digit sum, it expects each order to be at least somewhat unique.

Aluminum Signs Commemorate Star Wars Ships

You know how they have the building plaques on some ships to commemorate their construction? Every Star Trek ship has one on the bridge too. Well, even though the Star Wars ships never had these, you can buy them from Big Bay Toy Store.

They’re printed on brushed aluminum, with a black box backing for hanging and a certificate of authenticity. It’s a great way to pretend that your office or living room is a Star Wars ship, even though it doesn’t look like one. Choose from the Millennium Falcon, the X-34 Landspeeder, or the T-65 X-Wing Starfighter.

Each plate is limited to 295 pieces and is available for pre-order now. They will cost you a crazy $264.99(USD) each, but they do look pretty awesome. Serious Star Wars fans will want at least one.

Portal Test Chamber Wall Lamp: Proceed at Your Own Risk

dominator24 moved to a new apartment and needed to do something about all the bare walls. They did what any geek would do, and decided to make something cool, instead of just buying another crummy IKEA fixture – a wall lamp based on the level signage from Portal’s test chambers.

It was a simple design since it had to be able to fit in the car (due to college, dominator24 moves every three months.) It also had to be cheap. He came up with the idea of using white cloth stretched over a wooden frame with LED rope backlighting.

The detailed drawings are made from cut out bits of duct tape – the black ones on front of the cloth, and the grey ones taped on back.. It’s a simple and cheap way to geek up your room. If you want to try making one for yourself, head on over to Instructables for the details.

Neon Ghostbusters Sign, Who Ya Gonna Call? an Electrician

Best neon sign ever? Probably. Then again, I’m just a sucker for cool Ghostbusters stuff. Just don’t cross the streams or else the neon in these tubes might explode.
ghostbusters sign
Fans will see at once that this neon sign recreates the Ghostbusters movie poster, but what you may not know is that this sign can be found in the window of a Mexican restaurant called Touche Hombre in Melbourne, Australia. Random, no?

I love that a kick-ass Ghostbusters sign like this can be found at a Mexican restaurant in Australia. That is so awesome! It’s things like this that make geeks travel the world. I wonder how many other establishments have signs like this. Thank you internet. I am well traveled, yet rested.
